The FGC: Sponsorship, cameras and a divided community

The so called “FGC” is just a fabrication and business model. The top of the “FGC” include stream organizers, TO’s, and top players usually residing on the east or west coast of the U.S. This ‘elite’ sells sticks, game pads, headphones, t-shirts, stream “hype” and all this other random crap that you would never want if it didn’t make you feel like you were “in the community”.

There is no FGC. There is just a bunch of bullshit and subtle marketers selling you shit that you shouldn’t need at inflated prices.

I have no fucking clue as to why “losing a sponsor for the community” makes you feel sad for some reason because even more corporations aren’t coming in to suck you of your money.

Technology did not have to disappear for the Amish to be able to live in the old ways. Likewise, sponsors do not have to be lost for you to be able to play like the old days.

Game companies suck money out of players when they buy a game (sometimes buying the same game multiple times). They give a little of that money back to competitive players, in the form of sponsorships. That money motivates pro players to improve, and also keeps streams alive. The streams serve as a way to spread tech around, meaning you get to know about MorriDoom or Faltine Loop or Cammy unblockables the week they are discovered, instead of in the middle of an event after having your opponent demonstrate them on your character. The motivation for the sponsor is that this money given to the competitive players will increase the popularity of their games so that casual players will buy it. When a sponsor is lost the following things happen:

  1. Competitive players will spend the same amount of money buying games (because they buy everything that comes out)
  2. Companies will spend less money supporting competitive players (that’s generally what losing sponsors means)
  3. There will be less streams (no sponsor money to support them)
  4. Casual players will spend less money on buying games (no streams to popularize them)
  5. Companies will make fewer games (because there’s less money to be made)
  6. The games that do get made will evolve more slowly (because of fewer streams to spread tech around)

Dunno why people are hating on money and sponsors.

To quote from Darry from IPW’s video.

but if the players who won’t see any of that money (the vast majority) are asked to make huge sacrifices for the few who do see the money, it becomes questionable.

Yo…

Fucking for real? So you mean, if two people don’t pick their mains and are laughing and having fun during a weekly tournament, you’re going to cry out collusion?
Sorry I’m late to the party… but for reals… This shit is becoming the FGC’s next big buzzword.

Jump to 19mins.

Also to add:

  • It was GF
  • Not even 24 hours after the VxG incident. Of course shit’s still gonna be sensitive
  • It was pulled not for tournament reasons but because Spooky ain’t having that shit on his stream

Thanks for that. That, and BlackShinobi’s PM to me made things quite a bit clearer and makes sense.
Either way though… it’s whatever at this point. I don’t even know why I’m posting in this thread.

Because slowly but surely the fun is being further sucked out of your hobby.

Well do you want to bitch about not wanting more support from real adult companies or do you want to fuck around in the grand finals of a tournament? Pick one, with the clarification that if you’re going to be attending an event run by someone else’s team of people that they’re probably going to want to have certain basic standards.

As far as I know, fucking around in the grand finals of a tournament has been frowned on for as long as I’ve been alive. People just noticed it happening this time because it was on stream. If you want to split the money and not play, split the goddamn money and don’t play. Hogging the machine to dick around for no reason is a selfish waste of time for everybody else. Most of us have other things to do with our time. Just take the money and walk away.

If you want to “have fun”, have fun the entire tournament. That’s what I do.

Outside Level Up and Spooky there aren’t any streamers getting sponsor money (at least with any regularity). 99% of streamers don’t have any sponsors and aren’t making anything significant off of Twitch commercials and subscriptions.

@SirMixahLot or anyone else in the know shoot me a pm since this still seems to be hush hush. Haven’t played fgs seriously in a year or so but still try and stay in the loop on things

This doesn’t affect 99.9% of you unless you actually make a living from gaming.

You have to ask yourself now, do you put food on the table with your earnings from video games?

It’s not a personal thing man… Personally, IDGAF about all this. What’s sad is seeing the actions of very few bring down the last 5 years of hard work.

“My” hobby? No sir. “My” hobby is playing older fighters, Tetris, old JRPGs, and shmups. This doesn’t affect “my” hobby at all. I also haven’t competed in over 6 years. If tournaments go away, this again, doesn’t affect anything related to me. In fact, I doubt most of the people that play the games go to tournaments, so this doesn’t affect individuals at all. What it does affect is the availability of quality matches online, those that DO compete, and perhaps the possibility of big title future releases. That’s not to say if the far-reaching dissipation of tournaments would prevent another SF from being released, but it would hurt the amount of support it would get greatly.

But at least some of them are streaming because they recognize that they might, at some point in the future, make money from those streams. Not right now, but they see Spooky and think to themselves that maybe they can do a better job of streaming, get a bigger audience, and be the “next Spooky”.

This is what Viscant had to say…
and I like this…

Wow dumbest statement ever. And I highly dout the sheep called him out on that. Back then he would get shitted on. Anyone who every entered a tournament or supported a event, hosting locals at your friends to help build a scene, or simply just a part of the fgc, this is the biggest slap in the face, and he should be call out for it. And btw you “wanna be ass video game celebs” your not rock stars. Once this new generation of dickriders figure that out that better the fgc will be. This is how “top turds” feel rather they wont to admit it or not, which I can care less, but still laughable how the scene really boosted these guys head up. Sad enough the games nowadays are “derp derp” and now dudes want a Oscar for it. gtfo.

You clearly misread that post, or you at least skipped over the first two sentences.

Lol I didn’t. oops. Apologies to Viscant.

Still changes nothing about the statement in itself. This sponsorship and foolish egos needs to be shut down. This shit is fucking up the scene. It’s clearly not about the game itself anymore. This is why alot of people are going casual because people are sucking the fun out of the hobby itself and turning it into pure shit.

And why the fuck do the fgc other then the 1% care about sponsors and money, when only the 1% will ever see it. I dont get it.

This, I agree with…
I’m tired of people making my hobby feel like a fucking job.

And you know even if they are, their actions clearly show that they want it to remain a low paying job
