First great post, second - I really wonder who was about to jump on board and pulled back. Thirdly, I think there has to be a middle ground but also the major players in the FGC have to figure out what side of the fence they want to be on. I think there is a segment that would love to do all this for a living and there are some that just want to play and do all the things they did before all of the outside interest came in.
It feels like there is some weird crossroads coming up though.
even if every god damn fucking tournament closed down tomorrow and ponder closed down ggpo, the fighting game community will always continue to live. if there was an issue with a major sponsor being emotional enough to back out of sponsorship because of alleged colluding and under performing by single individuals, then maybe they arent the best fit for the fighting game community.
grow up? im already grown up. i have a job and a life that doesnt dictate i stream, make youtube videos, or win tournaments to maintain a lifestyle. TO’s have been taking it in the ass for a long time now without profit, and just looking to break even at best and have fun for the weekend. lets not forget where we come from and for some still are.
the fgc will be done!? if thats not over exaggerated, then i dont know what is. if you need streams to survive as a community, you were never a community or strong to begin with. a community can even fund evo through just pure donations if its built right. we’ve all seen how strong communities, including this one can be when they want to. so to say that the community is done because a sponsor is being pissy, is nothing short of outrageous. if you all wanna buy that bullshit, i have some shit flavored lolipops to sell you too.
nothing can kill something that WANTS to exist. when exaggerations are stated by our politicians, we laugh at them and rip them apart with facts, logic, and rationale. are we now accepting that the demise of the fighting game community is imminent over sponsor issues? CMOOOON SON. i think its evident that if the thousands that tune into watch games online every week, and the hundreds and sometimes thousands show up to actual tournaments wanted to keep this train going, we could. just ask anyone funded by kickstarter if its possible for a community to back a project or projects by the community.
Very insightful comment that I needed to re-present. I believe the original poster is from the Caribbean because the presentation and grammar was horrid with a word wall full of terrible grammar. I thought it was a shame to let that presentation stop a great comment.
Enjoy the proofed version:
". . . what they did was first embarrass the entire player base and then made it obvious they didn’t care and then took the money and ran.
Understand that Caribbean players for the most part cannot go to Majors in the US or even EVO. The visa restrictions are too long and hard to meet. To them VxG is their EVO. That’s why they have so many games, from CoD, to Marvel, to even FIFA. It’s because this tournament is their one chance to play on stream in a serious competition. Flocker and Christ G just make the American FGC look like jerks when they dismiss all that and make Grand Finals a joke. They deserve every punishment they get.
They were not wrongly accused of colluding they did collude, that is fact. They split the pot, ran, and gave little to no effort in the Grand Final set. Flocker is just full of it saying they received a lot of BS and so deserve to be let off the hook because of another wrong committed. The new ruling is exactly what we need and I hope they get EVO banned if they are ever caught doing this again. They showed no shame, they didn’t even try to hide it." -ZDH513
Until Ultra Chen style commentary is forced for every commentary stream, it’s not going anywhere too fast. The major stuff is getting more professional, but all it takes is one local or smaller tourney fuck up and shit hits the fan again.
There needs to be specific guidelines for how people must perform and dictate themselves at a tournament and until it hits down to the local level, we’ll get picked out by Kotaku and shunned by sponsors.
I am all for the community growing and doing what is necessary in order to grow but this is one thing that concterns me. I enjoy and lovte Ultra chen commentary, they spew out so much knowledge and insight as they commentate that it is purely amazing. However I equally enjoy yipes, combofiend, and mike ross commentary as well. Do they really need to stop commentating as they also give out great commentary but make it a little more fun and not as professional as Ultra chen.
I would think if combofiend was doing something really wrong that capcom would tell him he needs to cool it since he is in their employ now.
I feel like it would be a shame to lose their styles of commentary. However I think we should lose all commentators that commentate like fucking Gootecks did during VxG. Talking about players and bullshit just to get a cosplay girl to laugh. Shit was stupid and just makes it look like they dont know how to act around pussy.
I don’t think anyone is considering the fact that maybe it’s not 1950 anymore, and our generation has the ability and responsibility to attract sponsors without pretending to be some sort of twisted hat hating robot. You don’t need to cosplay as Bob Costas to get a job or go out to dinner anymore, why should we be afraid on the fucking internet?
As a member of CCG gaming groups, MMO gaming groups, RTS gaming groups, RPG gaming groups, as well as various groups of males of a similar age range with interests in comics, anime, science fiction, software development, etc. I would have to say the answer is YES. The MMO groups I’ve played with come closest to the general level of juvenile behavior and disrespect that permeates FGC events, but the gap is pretty far. That said, I don’t play FPS games at all and my understanding (based 100% on stereotypes and hearsay) is that they are worse than the FGC. Also the only sport I played seriously was football and it was always respectable. I dunno about basketball or american football.
On the conclusion of the article: Rather than divide the actual FGC into two, I think it’s sufficient to divide events into two. There can be events where anything goes, and events where everyone is expected to behave in a respectable manner. The type of event should be clearly advertised, and there should be disclaimers in the beginning informing viewers that the forthcoming show is not for general consumption. Sponsors would know what they’re getting into beforehand. Players would know as well. That way sponsors won’t have any standing to complain about offensive things mentioned in “anything goes” events that they choose to sponsor, and players won’t have any complaints either if they are DQed from a “respectable” event that they decided to join.
As a member of the “CCG” community (whatever the fuck this shit is), I can assure you folks that there is as much shit talking in M:TG as anything else. This dates to the days of the academy websites, pro players outright calling other pros cheaters (De La Rosa incident) and some M:TG OGs known for talking shit. I learned to talk shit while playing M:TG not from playing fighting games. That being mentioned, the reply I mentioned I would do earlier:
I’ll edit this post later with a bigger response to shinobi but there’s just one central thing I want to leave here: This community is going to make a choice on whether this is a hobby or a business. We are already making these choices without really understanding what is happening; those that want to push for the business side don’t necessarily grasp how much that changes things. In a lot of ways this change is similar to wanting video games to be considered sports. Most people just don’t know what the fuck they are getting involved with when they try to turn this into a business.
Also, I want to go on the record to say: Fuck a major. If we really care, I mean that if you really give a fuck about this community you are going to start addressing the problem getting places to play at a local level. We have enough majors to where scheduling is an issue. Overall that’s kind of a great problem and shows the health of the community. But really, pots, more majors, sponsorships isn’t really what we should be aiming for when it comes to steady growth: passing down the hobby, teaching the history, getting them to understand why it is great to show up to local sessions. When people in a local community go to Evo before they show up to a local session, we failed as a community.
Twitter was blowing up! Can someone tell me what exactly happened? Sad, I just got two of my friends into Mahvel and Injustice, FGC better not be tanking!
Thats one of the saddest things right now, I know alot of people who don’t wanna hit up locals because their not important, your locals should be one of the most important parts of your scene.
Whoa, accusations of cheating are included in shit-talking? That seems like an entirely different category to me. It’s a little more like Markman saying some players colluded and a little less like FChamp calling some players frauds. In any case, your information seems to be highly outdated. The commentary and tone of competitive MtG is so family friendly that it crosses over into campiness:
