You’re surprisingly good for somebody who’s been playing such a short period of time. I only asked because you mentioned that you had only recently started playing the game but I had been under the impression that you had at least been playing seriously for awhile.
Keep at it, you already have earned Daigo’s respect obviously, and that’s more than a LOT of people can say.
Dagger G was the Guile player, he’s considered one of the best Guile players in America. U1 is really hard to do against Guile compared to other fireball characters b/c of his recovery, that’s why I was surprised you do it on him, you have to do almost instantaneously when you see them fireball. Leviathan aka James was the Akuma player, you lost, but it’s one of Chun’s tougher matchups. Yeah, throw mixups are a big part of Chun’s game.
I was in the hawaii room when you played against dagger G as well, all of the hawaii players were very impressed how you played against leviathan and dagger G, congrats on winning the womens tourney as well, good stuff!
Commentary all weekend was good but I agree with the above. I don’t mind wanting to do a game you know but you should also know when you are out of your element. That being said, maybe a couple pieces of feedback …
ski - Way too loud and talked over others way too much. If you need proof, look at the Gamerbee/Wong match. I know people love ski because of his hype but did this match really need hype? The crowd was buzzing, stream was going nuts and people had no idea who was going to win. Yelling into the mic during the tense moments didn’t add to it, if anything it was annoying. TvC was his best commentary. Should stay away from SSFIV stuff.
Keits - Was actually glad when we told ski to stop talking so much but that faded when I heard it was because he wanted to talk more. How embarassing that this went out over the stream. You could even tell he had some sarcastic comment later on about how ski had knowledge in all games, just the way he said it was comedy.
Tekken Bearded Guy - Made the entire finals unwatchable. Spent half the time saying how he beat all these people and how the Tekken developers thanked him for training mode. No idea if he is good or not but honestly you weren’t good enough to be in finals so who really cares? A good example is TvC, most of the commentary people were in finals, so they warranted discussing their matches/strats. This self promotion was worse than anything Keits did.
Seth - By far the easiest listen all weekend. Knew the games well and didn’t yell or scream. Did he repeat comments often? Yeah. He carried Sessler through the finals though and explained everything in good detail. Seth is the Marv Albert of SF commentary.
Sessler - What did we really expect? At least he tried to keep up and asked questions. You could tell during Grand Finals he was surprised at how much Daigo landed his ultra and even remarked that he doesn’t miss it. Not great, not horrible.
General comment - Thanks for the stream for those of us who couldn’t attend. The above commentary isn’t hate, it’s intended to be constructive. One minor complaint was the prolonged Ono ‘announcement’. It was cool that Ono was there but to come on stage to giggle and talk about how he couldn’t say anything made me wonder why he was on stage. Thanking the crowd? Sure. Spending so much time on the stage to say nothing? Boring.
UltraDavid, Seb, James Chen, and Seth Killian are pretty much the only people that should be near a mic. I understand that this is a volunteer deal and nobody is a professional sportscaster, but aside from the people I listed, I think the overall commentating left a lot to be desired. If you have no voice, do not commentate. If you constantly interrupt, do not commentate. If you have nothing better to say than how great you are, do not commentate. If you have clear bias for/against a player, do not commentate. If you have little knowledge in a particular game, do not commentate. This shit really is just common sense.
Yeah that must be it, or you know, we could just be showing some respect to the one female player who actually displayed a fairly high level of skill in the women’s tournament. I’ll be the first one to admit the women’s tournament overall was exceedingly unimpressive skillwise, and I haven’t complimented a single other one of the women who have posted here or on any of the other forums since the tournament. Kayane was the only person who I, and MANY others, thought actually deserved to be in an invitational tournament, as she showed she could actually play the game, more than could be said for most of the other women there.
Just because this is a video game community doesn’t mean every single member is a virgin who sits at home drooling over random girls on the internet that they stand no chance with. There are plenty of succesful, married/dating members on here. I’m sure you’ve never been to a tournament to see that for yourself though.
^I mean, Mullah definitely has a point though. It honestly never surprises me when dudes sweat female posters/players in general in this community though.
Anyway, I agree with Hav on most of the points addressing Keits. Especially when he started acting like a diva over tvc. I really like Ultra even though his appearance was brief. James, Seth and Seb were all great too. Ski was ok…when his voice started going out…it was very annoying though. It sounded like Grover from sesame street was screaming through my speakers.
Im not into tekken but, the few matches i watch i liked the commentary from those guys as well. Sorrry dont remember their names…just a guy with a Moses beard.
As for Sessler…i already expressed how i felt about his commentating in the other thread but overall i think he did well. A lot of people just need to get off theire high horses and stop hating on the fact that Sessler was commentating. Yea, he fucked up like twice…but, lets not get a prissy about it. Let go.
I though the stream was good. I really had no real complaints. Next year i plan to be at evo so i wont be watching from afar though.
I saw Marvel from the hotel room and I was bummed to hear Ski’s voice so drained, Ski is great. That sucks Yipes could not do color. Nothing against Keits but that’s really not his game. I remember hearing “Marvel players like MAS sticks because they grew up in American arcades” and many other really not accurate Marvelisms.
lol I know though that it’s a long weekend and random talk is gonna get on the air, so I’m just looking at one small section of the weekend
yeah… the stream commentary was good, the finals glitch sucked but was easily rectified… intros were pretty clear, crowd shots prolly didn’t do the moments justice but that why “you had to be there” …
my suggestions … i dunno… get summore diverse community members to commentate… hold a vote or a competition for it… and maybe do a couple product demos for the sponsors … oh and get a highlight replay thing that plays when nothing is going on on stage
and no more Sesslar commentary reason being: S-kill definitely does his airtime justice and is prolly the best commentator simply because he assumes who is talking to knows what is going on… when he had to explain stuff to Adam it kinda killed it for the fighter fiends… nuthin against Adam Sesslar i love xplay but atleast Morgan and Olivia sound cute when they don’t know what they’re talking about
amazing stream except for sessler and the big crash. i would’ve liked to see maybe a possible guest commentator?? not dog face but like other players that did fairly well in the tourney. also maybe some interviews of how certain players did in the tourney and their thoughts. one example is i wouldve of like to hear lamerboi’s thoughts on his matches and jwong’s thoughts on his matches. also i would’ve like to see more dog face. and did yipes only commentate for marvel?? didnt hear him at all during evo
Thanks for the nice words, guys. I would have liked Marvel on Yipes too, but a lot of Yipes’ commentary doesn’t really work on the family friendly kind of stream Evo wants.
My complaints about Sessler aside, I think there could be some significant improvements to the commentary. Three things, in particular:
–Give the commentators a little time in between matches to introduce the next players and talk a bit about the upcoming personal and character matchups.
–Instead of shutting the stream down during breaks between games etc, keep it on and let the commentators talk. They can do interviews with players who just played or who will play after the break, talk about the previous or following game (including basic things for casual viewers and advanced things for more serious fans), or even just crack jokes and hang out. I think this is good both for interesting insight and for maintaining a better sense of continuity in the stream.
–After the tournament ends, keep the stream on for a while so the commentators can break things down. Post-tournament recaps, interviews, and so on would be really useful and interesting.
And if anyone can figure out a rewind and replay feature for going back over previous games, that would be fantastic.
I watched most of the stream over the weekend. First of all I want to say that considering I didn’t have to pay to do that, it was amazing. The first night the stream was glitched and laggy, but we lived with it. Saturday and Sunday it was perfect bar a few moments here and there. My only problem with the stream was the lack of varied commentary.
IMO s-kill is great, but he is monotone, and he really needs a hype man beside him at all times. Ski is generally quite fun to listen to but I think he can run out of things to say pretty quickly. Keits seems to be spreading himself a bit thin lately, he seems to be trying to cover all bases and ends up not covering anything very well. I don’t mind him on the podcasts but I don’t think he’s a particularly good commentator on matches at all.
Most of anything I just wanted Yipes. I would listen to Yipes and James Chen or Yipes and S-Kill all day and never get bored. Yipes is THE finest hype man and he has the best patter. I didn’t hear Yipes once, which sucked because we were waiting for him all weekend. Hell, even some Chris Hu or some Arturo shoutouts on the main stream would have been good. It just seemed like whenever things got quiet, boom. keits and a worn out ski were back on the mic.
Everyone I’ve spoken to has agreed that they felt way more hype on the saturday than the sunday, and most of that was just down to the commentary. Ski and James Chen were going nuts at the end of the night on the saturday, which gets everyone watching hyped up too. By the finals everyones enthusiasm just seemed to have fizzled out.
Again, I understand that this is a massive event and that lots of people are helping out for free. The stream was free and it was excellent on the saturday and sunday. But since this is a feedback thread I just wanted to note this. I just think it might be a good idea to try and possibly timetable some commentators, if possible, to avoid things getting stale. It can’t be much fun for the same two people to keep going back to commentate the same game. Get some fresh faces/voices in and keep everyone on rotation. And if there is a contractual obligation to keep someone on the mic, like the G4 guy, then get an extra mic in. If there’s ever anyone on the mic who doesn’t know the game well they should have two people beside them who do.
I just think that if there was always one hype man and one straight man who knows the game well and is happy to explain play-by-plays then the stream would be even better, and infinitely more appealing not just to the hardcore players, but to the masses in general.
