The death of fighting games… A personal journey that hopefully can help MvC:I?

You know what, I actually suck at fighting games.
I am about average skill level in general, so low in FGC standards.

But I don’t blame the game for my skill level (or lack their of it).
If I get beat, I get beat. I take my losses as an adult and tell the other player Good game.
Sometimes I get pointers or critiques and I get slightly better.
Occasionally I win a few matches

All I care for in a Fighting game is compelling game play, some interesting characters and having a good time.

I’m bad at fighting games, that doesn’t mean they should change to accommodate me though. If thats the case then whats the point, certain games require practice and skill over others.

I’d rather suck at fighting games than be godlike at super mario or call of duty. Thats just my opinion though, I think being good at a fighter is impressive and being great at shooters is lame.

Loved fighting games all my life and I stopped trying to play online or in anything remotely competitive a long time ago. The skill difference is just ridiculous and I don’t have any desire to practice to the point where I can be competitive. Learning some combos to use against the CPU or my friends of equal skill is all I need.

I’m gonna disagree with the OP about simplifying stuff. I love Guilty Gear. I can’t do Roman Cancels or a lot of the other fancy stuff in that game but I can do 1 or 2 neat combos with I-No and that seems to be enough to beat the CPU. As long as there’s some simple commands and combos I think that’ll be enough for casual fans to enjoy a fighting game.

Now, what we could use are more single player modes like 1 vs CPU and CPU vs CPU. Arcade’s great but I’d like to be able to choose my CPU opponents. Yes, yes, yes, there’s training mode but it’s not the same as a match with character intros, dialogue, victory/defeat/draw poses, and an outro. A match is fun…training mode is (sorry) booorrriiinggg. And CPU vs CPU…did I make you throw up a little? Ya…watching matches is great for fucking casuals like us that can’t fucking play the game right, but why the fuck do the devs need to waste their precious fucking time building a bitch-ass CPU vs CPU mode for some fucker like myself just because I can’t fucking play the game right??? Did I capture your anger and utter disgust correctly? Yes, I know there’s youtube, replays, tournaments, etc. I suggested CPU vs CPU in MvC3 once and someone told me “youtube”. Still waiting on that Morrigan/Tron/Felicia vs Wesker/Iron Fist/Doom match. I’m sorry but watching the same few characters constantly fighting each other gets boring. I’d rather be able to choose the characters I want to see fight. “But it’s not the same as two high-level FGC Gods clash!!” Casuals like myself can’t really tell the difference. “Oh FFS now they want something to play the game for them”. Well…don’t you guys like watching matches, too? So do we, but for different reasons. Maybe I can’t appreciate high-level play but I sure as hell can appreciate being able to see Ryu and Chun Li beating the crap out of Iron Fist and Psylocke, and getting to watch that or any other combination I can think of any time.

Whoa, spent too much time on CPU vs CPU. There are other modes that I didn’t care much for but I know other casuals loved, like Soul Calibur’s Tower of Lost Souls, Tekken 6’s Scenario Campaign, and Mortal Kombat’s Story Mode. Honestly, except for the story mode I don’t think you guys have anything to worry about and none of those will be included. I think they’ll, once AGAIN, try OP’s suggestion and simplify the combat system rather than add more modes. They always do that, it always fails to get as many casuals as they’d hope…but they still try the same thing again. But you guys don’t want more modes either because it gives us alternatives to playing online, which is where you guys think we should be. But I’m telling you, the skill difference between your average casual and your average regular online player is ridiculously high, and that’s always gonna keep us away. So which is better, dumbing down combat or adding more modes?

Now, I’m sure most of you have come up with exquisite ways to tell me how me and my family should die a horrible, painful death but I won’t be reading yours or anyone else’s reply. I know they’re just gonna be insults and there’s no reason for me to deal with that. But still, thanks for reading my opinion on this subject! Sorry bro, it’s not my fault that people like me make up most of the folks that’ll be buying this and other games. And to the possible few that read my opinion and want a rational, civilized discussion, I’m very sorry that I didn’t catch your reply and I wish you well. And to the asshole that’ll say “stopped reading at…”…bitch, I didn’t even read the first LETTER in YOUR reply =)

shut the fucc up and take a walk scrub :coffee:

Don’t worry…no one here will give a fuck about your family.

Too much wall of text meta bs. Go practice ur combos

Just as a reminder, the OP’s argument was to simplify fighting games for casuals, not for him. He claims to support 1-frame links and the like, so the question is whether or not developers should appeal to casuals over hardcore players. I hate the fact that this is the most active thread in MVCI…

Well then maybe focus on providing more single player content so those who aren’t trying to compete online or don’t care to git gud can still find enjoyment in the game? And add features that makes it easier to learn as u play in single player?

People always find something to complain about. The game is not even out yet, all we have is a teaser trailer.

I might never qualify for Evo, but I like how things are when it comes to difficulty (both single and multiplayer).
If the game gets too easy, I will get bored. The great thing about playing with human players ether local or online, it varies.
Not just in skill, but in style and strategy as well.

No, the person I was talking about in my post got salty and left the tournament earlier because while his Simple-Mode Firebrand had absolute, unbridled craziness, he had no fundamentals and got destroyed.
He left the tournament about 15-20 minutes after their losses and was mad salty that they lost.
They were allowed to use Simple-Mode and they received some instant gratification because won a game through sheer madness and then got salty when they realised that said madness was only going to work that once.
So no, “He got salty and left” has technically nothing to do with you but is indicative of this whole situation. You give someone an easier way to play, they might take it, but then when they lose they don’t think “I need to improve” they think “Well I mashed as hard as I could. This is a shit game” and that’s because when it comes down to it, the will to improve just isn’t there.
Giving them an easier control scheme won’t fix these issues.

I refuse to believe anyone to be as entrenched in the community as you claim would be the least bit intimidated by anything in MVC3. I started playing these games seriously in 98. It could take months to figure things out even in dedicated communities. Now max damage combos are often on youtube within HOURS of a game’s release and more subtle tech is spoonfed to the players in subsequent months. Their are hundreds of hours of tutorials, in both written and video form, as well as tools like frame data and hitbox viewers. These tools are easier to access than ever before via smartphones, tablets, and the PS4 browser WITHOUT EVEN HAVING TO EXIT TRAINING MODE. On top of that, virtually all decently sized metropolitan areas will have a dedicated player base who would likely accept you with open arms.

I was lucky. As I said I started playing these games seriously in 98 after playing SF2 casually for years. I had an arcade (The Wizard in Houston) 5 minutes from me with a handful of legendary players, some of which helped with this very website in its early days. And even with access to that talent pool, it took alot of effort to become even passingly decent at these games. Now, in 2016, its possible to become competent in a ridiculously short amount of time in comparison if you are willing to make the effort and take some beatings along the way.

And thats the problem. New players want to win without putting the time in and blame the devs. They blame game systems. They blame the tier list. Let me tell you something. Grab a mirror and blame yourself.

I have never been able to execute the last 3 combos for each character on training mode in UMVC3 but it doesn’t take away the fun in playing the game especially when playing with my friends.

BUt I might have probably been able to execute it if I have a console.

Casual Games are Casual.
But we play Fighting Games.

I’ve tried and failed to get friends into fighters at numerous times, and their answers for why they quit have never been “man this is so hard to execute”. It has always been how demotivating it is to feel that they suck at the game for such a long time, because they’re losing. They’re not snagging random kills because they accidentally blindsided someone, they don’t have any teammates to carry them or blame them, they can’t troll around with 2-3 friends on skype while everyone else plays a disorganized team. All they do is lose. And most people aren’t willing to do that.

I think the point the OP was trying to make is Fgs are too overwhelming for the casual uninformed player.

But what the hell would you expect when 2 persons compete in a close space with nothing but their own skills to protect them, there’re no walls here and nowhere to run for hiding. In this type of scenario the most skill player will always reign superior 99% of the time.

Just try, throw a bunch of shooters in a fucking cage to see what happens, most battles will end in seconds

Just going to repost my thoughts on accessibility to new players from the general thread

And also the OP says fighters are dead or dying when we still have loads of them coming out every year and no indication of that slowing down.

Action games like hack & slash, brawlers that are similar to fighting games in alot of things don’t make much money either.

These people don’t even like this games

It’s hard to take people seriously when they complain about lack of something in a game but then they don’t give a shit about the games that do offer it. Where were all the divekick and and rising thunder players at? They gave you no special move motions and then what? You kept playing SF while bitching about SF.

Rising Thunder was lit as fuck. Only reason people stopped playing was because the project was shut down.
