Any of you guys still use Litestep or those alternative Windows shells? Are those even still around? I haven’t kept up with those shells.
I’m interested in buying a netbook and I’m willing to spend about $250. Anybody got any suggestions?
I love Opera and have been using it since 1996. I swear its like a black athlete from the 30s. It’s fast and shits on everything and outperforms them but I gotta put up the “mask as… browser” just to get in some sites because the lazy site devs use browser ident instead of function ident. Still won’t stop me from using it though. They are the only software company that have delivered throughout the years and I would actually be willing to pay for this browser.
I tried it but it’s still not as fast as Acdsee 2.3. I actually use ACDsee 4 suite retail (because that’s the last one I bought) with just the main program installed because 2.3 doesn’t have most of the single button shortcuts 4 has. Program is old and the icons are ugly but it’s definitely still the fastest.
thanks for this, I’ve been looking for something so I don’t have to launch 3 IM softwares.
Foobar2000 looks and sounds AWESOME but I gotta say, its a BITCH to set up. The default interface is shit and I have no idea why right clicking on things doesn’t do anything). You really have to dedicate a weekend to set it up without it looking like shit. Controls and shortcuts sucked balls too, but I guess I have to put modules and add-ons to it? I don’t know why more people don’t give out auto-install setup packages for this thing when they want more ppl to download their skins.
With that iTunes sync add-on, I might actually have something to replace iTunes with now. If it has something like that then it probably has something that can manage my podcasts right? (download, import, etc).
I am a minimalist when it comes to my desktop, so Foobar is simple enough for me. I guess if I wanted to get even more minimalistic, I could use Billy. Hahah
from waht ive been seeing, the 250 dollar range only have sub standard machines. if you bump it up to 300, youd get more value for your money i think.
i was looking at the asus netbooks. the one thats just over 300 is pretty nice. i got my GF to get one, and shes excited to have one.
i just got myself a dell 11z this week. waiting for it in the mail right now. it runs almost twice your budget tho. but its a really light weight ultra thin laptop.
waht are you going to be using it for tho? definitely not gaming, i hope.:wonder:
What notebooks are you looking at? I want to buy my mom a notebook that’s really cheap, she will only use it for internet and typing anyways.
MSI Wind
Right , I’ll take stab.
Build your own. It’s really not as hard as it seems. I cant, in good faith, suggest you buy one pre-made cuz I havent done that myself in such a long time. It feels…sort…of qrong, lol.
Failing that though just spec one up at Dell that has decent processor (Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad or Core I7 if you’ve got the money and want to ‘future-proof’ your rig)
A decent amount of RAM (2 gigs upward depending on OS) and good graphics card (Radeon 4700 to 4800 series, Geforce 9800 series to GTX series)
The netbook was an MSI Wind, and although it can play source games, it’s with all the graphics settings at the lowest levels.
Personally I’d hold off until early next year before buying a netbook. All the major manufactures should be releasing the ‘next-gen’ of netbooks buy then.
Mainly due to fact that Intel is coming out with their new iteration of the Atom processor. The current Atom processor is in like 90% of netbooks released nowadays.
Nvidia should be joining in on the fun too with their hybrid CPU/GPU processors.
The main benefit of these chips are 1080p video play back and less power usage.
So yeah…they should be able to run a fair few games at a decent res.
No idea on this one I’m afraid.
You can actually sync iPods with Winamp now also.
But I don’t trust Winamp at all anymore.
I had it installed last month or so, and I noticed later on it changed the embedded artwork of a lot of my files. I had to sit through 8000 something files of my library changing artwork back.
I would use Acdsee, but its not free if i remember right.
I was going to use it for everyday use and get wireless internet from Sprint. I’m debating if I should get a laptop though but I think a netbook will do me fine.
:mad::mad::mad::mad:
So my new laptop that i’ve had for all of 10 days gets a blue screen everytime I turn it on now and the restarts. I had to go into safe mode hust to turn it of. Please tell me there is some easy way to fix this.
:mad::mad::mad::mad:
Windows Updates up the wazoo. That’s what I do when I have to format. Fuck all the bells. Fuck all the whistles. I update that shit as much as I can til I finish the SP1 update. Then I play ball.
Oh yeah, I never turn off my computer afterwards. Maybe once a month then deal with bluescreens til it evens out. Takes about 3 tries. Then I let that shit run again for another month.
Note: I dunno if there’s repercussions for leaving your computer on for long periods of time. As far as I read, it’s more hazardous to constantly turn/off your computer. But this was for desktop PCs. I doubt that applies to laptops. I’d turn that shit off after a couple of hours just be safe. My own peace of mind.
The new Windows Updates made gave me the bluescreen when I turn it on, so I just used restore point. I tried updating again a couple of hours ago and still no luck. I disabled it for the meantime.
windows downloaded some update last night. I went to shut my computer down and that shield was next to my shut down box and it said it was installing updates before it shut down, and I left the room. When i came back it had restarted and now the blue screen comes up about 30 seconds after I log on.
So is whatever this is actually screwing up my computer somehow or is it just a pain in the ass.
Fuck windows updates.
And as far I know you can leave your laptop on all the time. But sometimes when the weather is hot I turn it off. My friend doesn’t turn it off and it still works lol.
Litestep is still prominent.
But overall people seem to rather use docks and stuff like Samurize now.

About to try it out to see if its more useful than Launchy/Executor.
I’m actually giving Executor and Trillian a shot based on your recommendations. Got a new laptop from work, and it comes with Vista Ultimate and a butt-ton of RAM, so I’m giving everything a second chance from the OS up.
Early impressions for Executor:
Very robust compared to Launchy, really like the minimal approach to the program. I had to switch the hot key to activate it because I’m so used to Launchy’s alt+space hot key. A bit more programming-friendly, and I can see there’s a lot more customizing ability than Launchy on it. Might take some more poking and prodding around it, but early consensus says that I’m not hating on it.
Trillian Astra:
1st off - SMALL SKIN FTW. Minimalism is in on this new lappy, and the less the visual bloat, the better. I only have an AIM account, so using multiple messenger clients, while convenient, isn’t necessary. I agree that I shouldn’t have to pay for the extra features, but with that minimal skin, I don’t need anything else. I’m good. Maybe it’ll make me hop onto AIM more often. Eh. Anyway, I like.
This coming week, I’ll be looking to play around with Samurize. Haven’t been so excited to compile small scripts in a long while. So this will be fun.
Yeah, I downloaded a few Trillian skins off of devart. Man, this shit is heaven. Can’t see myself ever going back to Digsby or Miranda.
Tried Blaze… its nothing to write home about. 34k memory footprint compared to Executor’s 11k… I’ll pass. I’m a footprint whore. I like all my shit lightweight and non resource hogging for no reason.
Btw, Opera 10 is out of beta. RC is out! This shit is even faster than before… maybe even Chrome fast!
Not sure if Cameras would fit in here, but anyway I recently acquired a Nikon D90, and I love it.
