The Computer/Tech/Gadgets/Software Thread

I don’t even use spyware/malware or whatever you call it.

Safari’s new version has a huge amount of changes.

About to try it out, since Firefox has been making me mad.

I don’t use them, either.

Using Opera 10.1 right now, and the speed is like night and day compared to Firefox and even Chrome. I totally forgot how awesome Opera was.

Shit, this Twitter widget is awesome.

I think I’m switching again…

I think I might be potentially switching to this program. Foobar has gotten bloaty as of late.

Ironically, Foobar 1.0 beta is out now also.

common sense > spyware/adware.

Digsby is making remarkable improvements, while Trillian Astra has been stale for months. This is really tough, but I think I’m going to have to switch… at least until Astra 4.1 is out, whenever that will be…

Foobar users, get the new beta. It’s BLAZING fast, even with customizations.

I downloaded the iZotope Ozone DSP plugin for Winamp.

Music sounds almost brand new to me. Does Foobar offer something similar? Winamp’s getting boring to me.

I’m an early adopter of Digsby. I was able to get my first name as my username.

However, I stopped using it when this all went down.

I ended up going to Pidgin. I still love Trillian Astra, but I realized I didn’t need all that it offered. I just need a simple fast messenger.

BTW, if you guys haven’t messed around with Chrome lately, it’s pretty much turning into a Firefox killer. The extensions site is getting loaded, and it already has two of my 3 most used FF addons, including Adblock. Once that last addon is made, I’m pretty much kissing FF goodbye.

How’s the memory usage on Chrome? I find that Firefox uses a lot of memory for a browser.

Got a Windows question: I was in Sam’s Club the other day and saw a pc (I didn’t have time to check to see if it was running vista or 7), and the desktop background kept changing every 8 seconds. That shit was awesome. Is there an app I can dl for xp that does the same thing?

Yeah that’s a Windows 7 thing. I’m not sure if there’s a program you can download to do that shit on XP.

Good find. I rarely use Firefox now and have fallen in love with Opera. Maybe I should give Chrome a try with all these extensions. I just need Adblock and the Mouse Gestures thingy.

If I remember there is a program like that called Windows XP Winter Fun Pack

Chrome’s memory output can be tricky, since each tab takes up its own piece of memory in task manager. So if you have 5 tabs open, there will be 5 chrome.exe references in tm. Unlike Firefox though, performance doesn’t drag. Once you close a tab, that memory is pretty much open. Whereas FF still hogs some unnecessary memory even after tabs are closed.

Chrome is still light years ahead in overall speed and performance.

I just found that last addon/extension needed.

Peace out, FF.

Whoa, nice. An extension link. I think I’ll get the adblock and WOT extensions. Those were very handy in Firefox, WOT in particular. I sometimes use Firefox to see if a site is alright just because of the WOT feature.

Edit: I fired up Firefox and I guess they updated. Now they have some themes like Chrome has. Also read they have an Incognito mode…like Chrome has. But Firefox still drags somewhat for me.

UNLIKE Chrome. I still haven’t installed any extensions yet, but I’m reading up on some other stuff at the moment.

I finally started using Chrome as my main browser since I reformatted yesterday, and though its a really good browser, I hate that I can’t just open files and not downloading them. This is important for me especially since I use torrents a lot. Is there a fix for this? And Adblock is not that effective. Can anyone recommend some useful extensions?

Resurrecting this thread, since Opera 11 just came out and now they have extensions, such as Youtube vid downloaders and ad block.

Still a toss up between Opera and Chrome right now, but Opera has more features.

I’m thinking of switching to Opera 11 as my permanent browser. I’m coming off of FireFox 3.6. I tried Chrome/Iron, but the ad blocking was up to snuff, IMO.
