The Computer/Tech/Gadgets/Software Thread

dl’d on my win 7 ultimate and it works great. oddly enough you have to pass WGA during install.

Can I just straight up download that update or do I need to wait for fixed versions again?

Is there any particular reason you want to upgrade? What games do you play and at what resolution?

From what I’ve read the 5850 is marginally quicker than the GTX285, which itself is obviously way more quicker than your 4850.
Hard [OCP] conclusion of the HD 5850 review

But it all depends on what your playing really and if playing DX11 games in the future is important to you.

Yeah, you’d need it fixed.

But its an alpha release right now, so I don’t expect the real shit until maybe later this month, or next.

But its safe to say once you have that, you’ll never have to update again.

Since I’ll probably get a better/faster answer here, i’ll try asking here:

I’m looking into picking up a LCD Monitor, it’s main use would be for me solely, along with gatherings with friends so we can have multiple fighters set up. The issue I have is that I hear that you need to research into a monitor, especially for fighters as lag will tend to mess up the experience. What are the specific specs I should be looking at?

My friend can hook me up with a deal (not into fighters so he wouldn’t be the best person to ask), but if you guys know of a good monitor you recommend, I’d be happy to pick that up instead. I’m looking at something around 22-23".

Thanks in advance

Samsung 2333hd Synchmaster. Shit is tight. No lag. Monitor/hdtv combo. Try your local Sam’s Club or order from Samsung. I got mine last year around this time for 299. Last time I saw it a month ago, it was 199.

Oh snap, thanks for the save man. 23" and a good recommendation = purchase for me. I’ll look into that.

Thanks again bro

Do you guys have any experience with this model ? A local store is selling it for 199, so I’m thinking of copping it.

No particular reason. I have an unused birthday gift that I can use on anything (reasonably priced) and I thought a top end graphics card might be a good idea.

If I get the card, I’ll be upgrading my monitor of course. Currently got a 19" 1440 x 900 setup.

Thanks for the link, I’ll check it out.

Anybody have a alternative software to work with a zune? Really hate the software you use to get songs on there can’t even drag or drop or anything to confusing for my taste. Also any recommended mp3 playing software tried mediamonkey doesn’t want to work on my Windows 7 install.

Songbird apparently works with the Zune.

Cool i’ll give it a shot.

Firefox 4.0 is jocking the hell out of Google Chrome’s design.

It’s not even funny.

Microsoft Security Essentials - It looks pretty good and at least Microsoft is trying. But it’s made my system so slow. Kaspersky or ClamWin has never done that and they’ve both been pretty good protection for me.

Stupid things like games and Citrix applications launched from my VPN work fine, but anything on the desktop takes years longer. Unzipping or copying a file, running an app, changing wallpaper, etc. You know, the stuff that I do the most. that and start-up time has been greatly increase. We’ll see how it holds up for a week before I uninstall it.

Microsoft Security Essentials runs fine with my system.

I actually had an issue yesterday where cdmagent.exe (part of Comodo Internet Security) was fucked up. Had a huge memory leak and I couldn’t do anything because my system became so slow. So I had to uninstall and reinstall. Had to wait an hour or so before my system even let me do anything.

But after I uninstalled, I was trying alternatives.

Microsoft Essentials is okay, wasn’t a fan of the memory use.

The sad thing is a lot of these programs are built for users running modern day hardware, so this is to be expected. Anyone notice how watching certain videos online is impossible if you don’t have a recent video card and decent ram? They skip like crazy.

My system is old, but it’s no slug. 2gigs DDR2 with a single core athlon64 2.5ghz and a Radeon 1650 XT. It’s nothing at all to brag about, but it should be fine running just about anything on XP.

Not only that, but I just installed it on my aunt’s much lesser Emachines PC and it worked fine. And I used it for the first time “in the field” and it actually was able to remove a rather nasty worm and some other malware she had installed. But, I think when I restored a questionable backup, it might have been able to disable Essentials. I’m not 100% sure yet, but when I added back her profile folder (which I knew was still infected) the system came back telling me that Essentials was disabled. It had the red icon and then BOOM! it came back up. It’s currently scanning the entire disk while I’m at work. She’ll call me back once it’s done scanning. When I get time I’m gonna do another install and see if I can really remove that damn worm.

If I’m using a VGA cable and the max resolution on my monitor is 1920 x 1080, should I set it to this resolution or am I supposed to set it to a lower res like 1360 x 768?

Need to buy a HDMI to DVI cable but I’m using a spare VGA in the meantime, so I’m looking for the best picture for a VGA I can get.

I’m gonna buy a 1TB external hard drive. Any recommendations? I know I said Western Digital is good but I want to hear other people’s experience with other brands, especially the cheaper ones. I want to be sure cause that’s a reaaaally big hard drive size.

Was just talking about how nice Gizmo5 is just the other day, but apparently Skype is about to buy them out.
