Dudley may present some issues in footsie range with his ridiculously good focus attack. If he’s good at mixing up his toward fierce, you can eat a couple of those and be in trouble. His jump ins are not an issue as long as you’re not always anti-airing from the ground. His close up mix ups are definitely where he gets points in the match up, but I generally think it’s 5-5. He can punish a lot of special moves but lacks footsies against Blanka. What he lacks though, he makes up in frame traps, his explosive close up game and his focus attack plus toward fierce.
Just finished a set with an Adon player - probably not Blanka’s hardest matchup, but certainly harder than Hawk. So here are a few random Adon notes:

s.HK stuffs dive kicks (Jaguar Tooth) and flipkicks (Jaguar Kick). It’s a seriously underrated normal in general, but in this matchup it particularly shines. The timing can be tricky since it comes out so fast, in general I try to throw out a few random s.HKs here and there, just to get the Adon thinking twice before throwing out kicks. If it trades on Tooth, you end up about even on damage.

c.MP can also beat both Tooth and Kick, but the timing is a big pain in the ass since you have much less range. Good for footsies, though, since even if Adon counters with a special, you may end up stuffing him anyway.

Blocked balls can be punished by LK Jag. Kick and/or with Ultra 1, but there’s only a 3-frame window where U1’ll do full damage, the rest of the time it’ll air-juggle.

If Adon goes for a Jaguar Kick from midscreen, you can stuff it with EX. Upball on reaction and possibly HK Upball as well.

Electricity is, as usual, great for mindgames and messing with vortex attempts. Adon’s specials can punish it, but he has to be at the right range - about 3/4ths screen for EX. Jag Tooth, and almost touching for Rising Jaguar (a fun range against scrubs, since if he lingers a bit too long on towards he’ll end up shocked). The only other Electricity punish of note is J.HP. If Adon isn’t spaced right with his kicks, it’ll either beat them or trade with Blanka in slight favor.

Adon can punish j.MK crossovers with reversal HK Rising Jaguar on wakeup.

Adon can occasionally tag Blanka’s KKK Ultra 2 from fullscreen with LK Jaguar Kick (I think the exact spacing is about one step from fullscreen), and can ALWAYS jump the first pound, then EX. Jag Kick the final pound to trade (basically an even trade) - making him one of the few characters who can’t be fullscreen chipped to death for free.

Fear not, though - Ultra 2 (particularly the PPP version) stuffs so much of Adon’s shit that it’s almost better to just sit on meter and charge down-back than actually use it. U1 does a better job at punishing specials on block, though (more damage on hit) - it probably boils down to personal preference, but my personal preference is U2.

Because of Adon’s arcs, this is a very spacing-heavy match. River Run (df+HP) is always a great “fuck you” footsie - I believe it’s safe at max range in this match. I haven’t played enough vs. Adon to get a precise feel for all the spacing, but my best guess is that he’d like you at EX. Jag Kick range for the quick overhead + decent startup on Jag Tooth, and you’d prefer him either at total fullscreen (especially once you have Ultra charge) or at the typical Blanka distance - where River Run is safe / HK Rainbow crosses / LP Ball whiffs / step-j.MK crosses up.
Like I said, I haven’t played enough really good Adons to go into much more detail. My hunch is that it’s a pretty close matchup overall - at most, 6-4 in one direction or the other, more likely 5-5. It seems that, like he does to a lot of other characters, Blanka really stuffs Adon’s “default” gameplan, resulting in Adon needing to be either good with fundamentals and improvisation, or have a separate “Vs. Blanka” gameplan. This also makes it hard to tell if the matchup is slightly in Blanka’s favor, or if it’s 5-5 or even slightly tilted towards Adon and the Adon players just don’t have good Blanka experience.
Most characters have a way to punish full-screen U2 without meter. The only char I generally attempt it against is Ryu because his punish is quite hard. How does Blanka’s footsies stack up to Adon’s mighty st.hk?
Wow, a lot of new shit’s been discovered there. Guess I’m lucky that the only chip-kills I’ve needed were against people who didn’t know the proper punish. :wgrin:
River Run fucks Adon’s HK up real good, and I’m relatively sure you can pull it off on reaction (hard to tell for sure in training mode). If not, you probably want to back into the range where River Run will hit but HK won’t. Up-close, River Run is a bit more of a guessing game, and so awfully unsafe on block that it may pay to just downback and be prepared to EX. Ball an overhead Jag Kick.
c.HK will also work, but is a lot less forgiving with spacing and timing, I doubt it can be done regularly on reaction.
Finally, one of Blanka’s standard pokes, c.MP, does very well against s.HK, sometimes beating it and the rest of the time usually (but not always) trading with a life lead for Blanka. You’ll be throwing this out a lot to interrupt Adon’s specials before they’re active, and as anti-air, etc, so the fact that it’s good against s.HK is one more point in its favor.
Moreover, s.HK also loses to electricity, and trades with ball with a disadvantage for Adon.
As such, I really can’t see a smart Adon relying on it outside of guarenteed setups/punishes, or using it in any situation where Blanka can pull Electricity (landing, wakeup) or has backcharge for ball.
I dunno about slide during footsies (or against any non-projectile chars in fact…). Many players use Focus Attacks at safe slide range or even closer if they see you like throwing them out. Unless Adon’s FA has some funny property that makes it difficult to punish slides, I don’t think it’s such a good idea.
IMO at this early stage of the game you can still get away with using U2 as a chip kill on many characters whose punishes against full-screen chip aren’t so obvious (and need to be rehearsed in training mode).
I think slide works primarily because nobody would ever be stupid enough to actually try it - advanced Yomi kinda stuff. One of those things that beats scrubs, loses in mids, but can actually do some shit at high-level. Again, you’re mostly throwing them out on reaction, or when the Adon has shown a particular pattern (oftentimes involving s.HK) that you can beat. If they’re neutral, there’s no reason to do anything but build charge and maybe c.MP.
Sorry guys. It’s been a little busy at work. I don’t want to be doing write ups at home because thats the time I take to actually play and figure stuff out. This weekend is a long weekend for me though so I’ll make sure I get it done.
A little note… U1 is the way to go against Chun Li. I think her fireball is so bad and Blanka has so many way to get around it, that any decent Chun player won’t even bother using her fireball against Blanka. On top of that, as I said before FA x dash forward x anti air U2 does not work on her. So I don’t see any way to land U2 on her at all. You’re better off taking the ambiguous U1 after the forward throw when you need to make a comeback or something. I don’t think I believe the tier list in that match. I feel like it’s 5-5. It just doesn’t feel like a mismatch to me.
Against Adon, here’s a little trick that will probably only work once… If you are at the opposite end of the screen and Adon does RH Jaguar Tooth, you can cower crouch and it will whiff completely. If you time it right, you can get free electricity. But like I said, it’ll probably only work once as Adon players shouldn’t be doing full screen Jaguar Tooth’s anyway.
Anyone have extensive playtime against really good guiles? I need to understand this matchup better.
DITTO. Guile is one of my least favorite match ups.
I think it’s up to the user, obviously. U2 is my choice against Chun so that no fireball game when I’m turtling exists to begin with. It also prevents any jumps and makes it a strict life-lead protect game as it should be. Usually with U1 against Shizza he has a stock if I do manage to grab him. If Chun has a meter, it’s useless to try any 50/50
Does EX SBK beat U1? No one has tried that against me so I don’t know. Shizza is probably the best Chun in the U.S., so you must have good Chun experience. I think though that if you just hang out and turtle at mid range, that will be enough to stop Chun from throwing fireballs. From there you can slide her shitty fireball easily. Even online you can slide her fireball on reaction. Thats how bad it recovers. So I don’t see a reason to just threaten with U2 which you can only get when you have revenge, when you can slide on reaction her fireballs at anytime. It just seems like U2 will be a non factor against a good Chun. They know how bad her fireball is, so they won’t use it when they know you can slide punish them for it.
Ex sbk does beat ultra 1
It’s official. I can’t play against Sim.
My gameplan in my mind is this:
Between fireballs, lp ball to make up distance and maybe trade. See fireball, dash and slide. Jump and lp to keep away from teleport bs.
I can’t consistently execute such a simple plan.
I try to ball his limps when he’s going for HP, and bulldog his fireballs till you get him in the corner. I’m trying a few things to keep him there, which is where I’m having problems vs Sim, but I started sliding L M H M L (jab > jab elec) to keep him there or get a counter-hit combo. I normally piano L M H L H but I need the faster start up frames on elec, but you can always throw off his timing with a slower one. Always look for the teleports, his only way of getting out is if you’re not looking for it, or he’ll take the trade. I noticed standing jab stops a few of his footsies when timed a bit right, makes it easier to close the gap just a little.
Against Guile, the one I play consistently beats me, sliding under sonic booms is much harder now but it’s still possible when in range, but obviously you need to be careful of them walking back then charging a FA. Guile can’t really stop cross-ups when knocked down, but c.HP will stop you even when you’re completely on the other side of him. I try to poke-hop cancel to screw with his charge, as long as you don’t do it all the time it should give you some free damage here and there. Other then that, try to bait flash kicks. That’s pretty much it, this fight is horrible imo.
Well, it’s a way of threatening and shutting down any jump ins or fireballs. The only thing that beats anti-air U2 is her safe jump lk set up. Forward throw, dash twice, cross up lk will make the U2 whiff. Everything else? It’ll hit. It makes it a straight ground game which is where you want to be because Chun completely ends Blanka’s air to air options and has a confusingly good cross-up mix up game. Also, against those who do not know the counters to U2 chip damage, it serves as a free 150 damage closer.
For Shizza, he doesn’t know that he can jump the first hit and sweep. Instead…
He does the ultra after the animation with U1 and hits me with a better punish…
Welcome to elite play, I guess.
Either way, U1 is useless against top Chuns because they build meter so rapidly. Hops do screw him up, though. I suggest every Blanka use hops to mix up Chun and ruin her comfort zone.
Use hop, lk lk and roundhouse to beat any crouch techs. Lk, lk, jab electricity to bring the pressure on and then as a finishing touch, standing lk to mimic the double knees and go for a throw. OR use standing RH to do damage and not get punishes (unless she has super…)
Realyst or Mullah. Give me some new crap about the Sim match up besides what I’ve written out. I need something to inspire me about this match up. I’m already mind f*cked before it begins.
i dont know the sim matchup tbh, not when it comes down to the in depth stuff to do when you get up close. the only good sims i’ve played have been in laggy connections and i lost too
Sabin’s experiences against Mizoteru Blanka. Could be of some use?
mizoteru didn’t make the finals at gods garden for nothing LOL.
This is a great thread. Thanks Realyst and Mullah for your continued input. You put hope into this Blanka player that he can become a true tournament winning character
