Incruentum:
First off, you rock for seeing a problem/deficiency and trying to do something about it. Second, i like your website name and design, along with the uber-useful search function. Third, i agree that it sucks having to log in to view this thread, and the justification that it forces more people to register on SRK is kind of a weak one to me. I mean, people should register if they have something to say. We shouldn’t make lurkers register because if they didn’t care enough to register in the first place, they probably don’t have anything useful to add to the discussion. I think it’s better to let them decide when they’re ready to participate.
But on the other hand, i’ve come to the conclusion that if you’re going to put work into something, it should benefit something you want to support. In other words, make sure you know what you’re promoting. In its own small way, this thread supports/promotes SRK. Of course SRK is an empty site with next to zero content, but it’s still the premier gathering spot for the SF community. There are two main reasons why Sonic Hurricane doesn’t have any kind of feedback system, like a forum or BBS:
- Noble reason: Every person posting a question or idea on my forum would be one less person posting that same question or idea in the CvS2 Strategy section on SRK.
- Selfish reason: I’ve designed my site in a way that most questions about video content are answered beforehand, to avoid having to answer the same questions over and over.
When VidOp first started, it was supposed to provide a haven for the combo video community and to encourage combo video makers to discuss ideas, projects, collaborations, problems, etc. but due to poor execution on our part, that forum never got off the ground. So towards the end of the whole thing, it really started to bug me that VidOp was getting 500 hits per day just capitalizing on gaining attention for video makers’ work and not converting that attention into anything useful for the community. (As you can tell, i get really annoyed reflecting on all the ways in which VidOp failed and the only reason i don’t talk shit outright is because <3 LB).
So my big question is this: Suppose you get your website as popular as VidOp during its peak. How are you going to use that to benefit the community? (It’s easy/automatic to think of the community as SRK, but you could conceivably create your own medium for community interaction/discussion - although anyone running SF websites will tell you that it’s next to impossible to compete with SRK.) Alternatively, if you have problems with SRK (as many people do), what do you intend to promote instead?
Cuz if your goal makes sense to me, then i’ve got absolutely no problem with you posting updates from this thread. I’d even help get the word out about your site by linking to your site, mentioning it in random discussions on random forums, and anything else i could think of.
