Yeah, that wasn’t really a surprise, though. I think Alvarez did the right thing trying to break Mayweather’s pace, but he wasn’t fighting like he had twenty pounds on Mayweather, and that’s been the key in his closest matches. Mayweather was acting like he was the bigger fighter, Alvarez was letting him do it, and that pretty much sealed his fate.
It’s funny because it seems like everyone who fights Mayweather wants to fight like him, instead of fighting their own fight. I thought Alvarez was going to use his size, but he didn’t, and the times he did, he proved mildly successful, which was a clue as to how to make Mayweather work a bit more/use up stamina, etc.
the guy commentating this fight in the UK said it was probably the same female judge (with the emphasis on the word female) who gave bradley the win over pacman.

We all thought Cotto was going to use his size and bully Mayweather too, and he tried to. It didn’t work. Mayweather actually outboxed him with his back to the ropes. I don’t think it’s as simple as just pushing your weight around, he can defend too well against the close range fighting. And for shots that he can’t defend, he’ll tie you up before you can even get it off.

There’s usually a moment like that in every one of Floyd’s late career fights. It typically doesn’t happen. He did have his share of knockouts in the lower weight classes though, so there’s that. Not going to fault him for not KOing people 20+ pounds up on him in the ring, not when he’s this untouchable. Almost makes you forget what a reprehensible human being he is.

It didn’t work, but Cotto probably gave Mayweather the closest fight he’s had since De La Hoya, where, again, size was an issue; it may not have worked so far, but it’s worked better trying to beat Money at his own game. If Canelo had actually used his size a little bit more, he probably still would not have won, but I think he could have at least lost by a split decision.
