The Blu-ray Thread v1.0

huge star wars fan and at first I hated that but knowing the original han, the change really does not bother me anymore.

I whole heartedly agree with the Han shooting first thing, and how significant that change was. Boneheaded decision.

With that been said, get over it. Star Wars is still awesome

Not getting over it is the superior money-saving strategy. Companies that double, triple, and quadruble-dip with their home video releases are relying on consumers to gloss over whatever problems they have with the initial version of the product. Eventually, a fixed version gets released, starkly reminding the consumers that the version they have is undesirable.

I refused to buy the Star Wars Special Edition DVDs in 2004. My patience was rewarded when the unaltered versions were released on DVD a couple years after.

Don’t get over it. You don’t have to accept every last damn thing with the Star Wars logo on it.

Hello all, whats the deal with some older movies getting brought back to blu-ray… i dunno it just seems kind of like a rip off. For the fact that most of the 80’s-90’s blu rays i’ve watched look uncanny to the dvd version, example: Labyrinth. Borrowed it from friend(sister lost my dvd of it) and it looked no different from my old dvd… Anyways just thought it was interesting. For the record, i think an anime really shows off blu-ray better than rl flick can, Paprika was amazing looking. Oh and flcl blu ray feb. 22, Hood Hair i’m right with ya lol get a 2nd chance to own an awesome series on blu ray at that.

Great. That makes you a more sophisticated Star Wars fan and saves you money to boot. For some of us, it’s not a matter of buying everything Star Wars. I genuinely still love SW and will like it even more on high-def video and sound. I’ll watch them multiple times, except Ep 1 and 2, and enjoy it everytime. I might not be keepin it real, but it’s still worth a first day purchase from me.

Agreed on Anime Blu-rays. Black lines are black instead of dark grey. Bright colors pop. Minor details in every frame are impossible to ignore. I feel the same about hand drawn Disney and games like Eternal Sonata and Valkyria Chronicles.

Ya i enjoy the Pixar movies on blu-ray also and wish more Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki movies would come to blu-ray.If not the classic ghibli flicks then at least maybe some of the more modern ones like Howl’s and Spirited Away. I always try to base my blu-ray purchases on colors, visuals etc. Also think Thundercats would really stand out on blu-ray, regardless they look amazing but such a pain to get on dvd.

Could be troll bait, or maybe you have bad eyes, or maybe you’re not a video/audiophile I’m guessing it’s the latter.

Jesus relax dude lol, maybe it was just Labyrinth and a couple other blu-rays. For the record my eyes aren’t worth shit lol. Key word was >some<…Samurai 7 is epicness though.

Even with shitty transfers, blu ray still looks better. You will notice the difference when watching it on a larger screen.

I thought Labyrinth looked pretty damn good on Blu. Some movies are shot on grainy film and to the untrained eye it seems to be poor video quality but actually it’s how the director intended for it to be or it’s just how the film was shot. A good Blu-ray transfer respects this and doesn’t try to change the original look of the film.

+1000000 to Studio Ghibli / Miyazaki films on Blu-ray. For me, these movies would be top priority, right up there with Pixar and Disney classics.

Still waiting for the day when Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is released, hopefully

Are you fucking kidding me? Whatever Happened to Baby Jane gets 2012 release while Vertigo, Chinatown, Strangers on a Train, and Sunset Blvd have been listed with no release date for like 2 years!?

Ya my thing was sum blu-ray just don’t warrant a purchase, for me anyways. No doubt they are better quality etc. Just spoiled with lavish colors from animations and the right movies is all lol. Also anyone know if EraserHead ever came to blu-ray, black n whites can turn out looking pretty damn cool on blu-ray(La Haine looked pretty sweet).

i’ve seen some blu rays that literally, you can tell no extra effort went into it. I try to avoid buying anything for bluray that wasn’t originally done in HD (seriously, 40 bucks for a black and white Christmas Carol on blu ray???), but I still notice a few of my older pick ups looking hella good (ie Boogie Nights or Bram Stoker’s Dracula) in Blu Ray

sorry to double post, but it looks like the LOTR Extended Blu-Rays come out this year

I almost bought the theatrical box set for 30 bucks 2 weeks ago, but decided to just hold out a little longer for the extended versions.

yeah there are plenty of blu rays that are basically no different than your player upscaling a dvd on the fly.

do you really think they went back a hi-def’ed Dr. Giggles?

Type in the name of a movi on bluray.com search bar to see if it’s out or has a release date or is even announced for bd.

Alien set worth $70 Or should I hold out till it gets cheaper? of my 113 bd’s almost 100 of them cost under $10 lol I’m cheap.

What’s the transfer like on Hero?

I’m somewhat of a videophile but I can’t break down bd’s the way pro reviewers do. This should help you out if you haven’t read it.

Is UK version any different?

the combination of the quotee (???) and sprayed/spewed beer force me to already submit this as POTY 2011

I’m pretty sure the downloaded rip I have of Starship Troopers looks better than the Blue Ray i just bought
