The Blu-ray Thread v1.0

Paramount jappears to be able to get of their contract with HD-DVD through an escape-clause if warner backs blu-ray. i’m assuming it’s going to be over real soon now.

thing is, nobody really wants to be arguing over movie formats, its bullshit that consumers have to argue about it in the first place. they’re fucking movies, everyone wants one HD standard, its bullshit that you can’t watch Knocked Up in HD unless you have HD-DVD.

Seeing as DVDs will pretty much become obsolete, and that I’ll need an External BluRay player to play all future BluRay movie releases and whatnot;
what’s a good External BluRay player that can also run DVDs, CDs, etc.

An external Blu-ray drive for PC?

^Yeah that thing.

No reliable source has ever confirmed this, and Paramount is still maintaining the stance that it intends to “support HD DVD” (whether that statement actually means anything is anyone’s guess). For now, though, the only hint of the escape clause I’ve ever been able to find was posted by one of the Blu-ray insiders of Blu-ray.com (it was either Penton-Man or Maxpower; I don’t remember). Unfortunately, in the same post where he hints that the escape clause exists, he also says that the recent events did not constitute what is needed to actually invoke the clause.

However, I imagine that the whole point will become moot if Universal decides to change its HDM strategy (nothing is stopping them from doing it except Ken Graffeo) and effectively kill off HD DVD right then and there. But that is quite an “if.”

What I would like would be for Sony (or anyone else from the BDA) to just help Paramount pay any penalty fees for ditching its contract, but I strongly doubt that will actually happen. I suppose that, if I can’t get my blu Transformers, at least I can get a kick out of Michael Bay’s crazy posts on the matter.

Anywho, in case you guys weren’t aware… New Line is indeed Blu-ray exclusive as well now. The HD-DVD releases of Shoot 'Em Up, Hairspray & Rush Hour 3 are all cancelled.

Some more good news - Sony is supposed to announce a sub-$200 PC Blu-ray drive at CES.

I’m tired of hearing about HD-DVD Vs Blu-Ray.

Wish the industry would just pick Blu-Ray and be done with it. Both are ok formats i guess, but BD holds a LOT more data and thus will be the better option long term.

The only edge HD-DVD ever really had was cheaper price, but give it a few years and that won’t be an issue anymore.

I love DVD format and am plenty satisfied with the quality. Especially in the current era where DVD recordable tech is as inexpensive as CD-R stuff is.

If i ever got Blu-ray recordable stuff, it would just be so i could compact my large DVD collection onto a mere handful of BR discs. Sweetness!

Edit: One dual-layer Blu-Ray disc capacity: 50GBs! Hell yeah.

WB is Blu-Ray exclusive. HD-DUD is dead.

Well, I guess you can’t blame them for trying to stick it out with their shitty format, since the shittier format won the previous format war.

Oh, so we’re bringing the lingo to SRK now?

Here are the other ones I’ve seen/used: HD-DUST, HD-DEAD.

I’m glad I held off on buying a combo drive for my htpc.

Hdi > BD-J

being able to copy your own movies and play them anywhere in your house > BD+

HD-DVD’s are cheaper to produce and there’s more plants, there’s currently only 2 blu ray plants and one is in japan

region free > region locked (tho a lot of blu ray movies aren’t region locked, some are)

those are some more edges

New Line Cinema disagrees. :wgrin:

Optional region locking is actually not so bad, as it allows us to get day-and-date titles sooner.

yea i really wanted mr woodcock on hd dvd, guess i’ll have to settle for blu ray

but too bad both sides were greedy and didn’t want to compromise on anything which led to two formats

blu ray with hdi would be awesome

I agree. When MS approached the BDA with HDi, the BDA should have accepted. I don’t necessarily think HDi is better or anything, but it would have brought an end to the format war right then and there, before it even started. Ironically, Sony and Disney did approve of it, but the rest of the BDA said no.

Well, I guess Blu-Ray will finally be getting something along those lines soon.

Blu-Ray Profile 2.0 will contain a smaller video file which can be transferred to a PSP for viewing.

Can’t find the article right now though (at school).

Does anyone know what Universal’s official position is, google isn’t helping. They appear to just be volunteering to stick with hd-dvd and aren’t bound to it in any way from the articles I see, so what is stopping them from releasing on bluray or even both formats as some studios are doing. I really want Serenity, 40yo Virgin, and Knocked Up in high definition.

they haven’t said anything, but they’ll probably stay until the end

universal goes half ass on all of their releases

same generic menu, same features, inconsistant transfers (*)

imagine if they had to learn a whole new format, that would be horrible

(*) - for catalog titles, their new releases tend to be very good
