Not really scary now, but back in the day, when this game was in the arcade, it supported 4 players and each of you held shotguns and reloading them wasn’t as easy as just a click for the console version. Also arcade version had crap just instantly pop up out of nowhere and a much higher attack rate and projectile speed. Also the display was HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEE.
The original Silent Hill for me. I only say this because I haven’t played any other SH games beyond the first.
Doom was scary at times, like when you open a door and there’s a Baron of Hell right in front of you. Doom 3 had those demon babies…hate those things.
Only 2 horror games were ever out at a young enough age to even make me jump:
Play this shit at 8 years old. At night.
Resident Evil is an honorable mention, basically monsters coming from an off-screen angle.
Jaws on NES scared the fuck out of me. Castles in SMB, too. Music, maybe.
Russian Roulette…
This motherfucker
The only time I’ve been scared of a video game was when I played Doom 3 at 10 years old. Everytime I got scared I used the skip level cheat. I eventually got to the last level like that and couldn’t beat it because I didn’t have the soul cube.
I recently picked up BFG edition and played the whole thing through and it was actually pretty good
…street fighter fourrr
vs Yipes magneto.
the horror!
Fatal Frame 2 does the best job of making your character feel extremely weak and vulnerable. Even when you do fight back you have to let shit get right up in your face to do any real damage to it. Trying to line up the right shot and waiting for the brief moment where you can do max damage while the ghosts are shimmering in and out of sight and making crazy noises at you is pretty intense, and since you have limited “ammo” you pretty much have to go for it.
I guess it has a few decent jump scares too, as one of my friends literally fell out of his chair once while just watching me play it, but I don’t startle easily so I can’t really judge it myself.
@Effenhoog Don’t forget he one ghost tied in rope you can’t kill with ay film, yeah i figured that out the hard way. That shit completely mindfucked me.
Silent Hill 2 and Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, Eternal Darkness mainly for the fucked up stuff the game would do to you if you lost too much sanity
Friday the 13th was some scary shit back in the day. It was crap, but had a lot tension. Cabin music was spooky lol.
While overall this is no where near the scariest game I’ve played, I need to give a shout out to Majora’s Mask. Played it when I was about 6-7 years old. If the moon wasn’t un-nerving enough, the first time I put on the Deku mask, I flipped my shit.
As for legit-scary games, I’d probably have to give that to Penumbra.
This is important to emphasize. Music plays a huge role. Sometimes a game could be legit scary but then they add some dumb music and completely ruin the experience.
A good example is when you’re inside the tomb and have random stuff popping out of nowhere and your point of view constantly shifting and projectiles flying at your from random angles that you have to snipe while this song is playing:
Also this was godlike intro music:
Ecco the dolphin on the genesis is some scary shit towards the end of the game. It maybe cute and all at first but no. I was frightened as a child.
well to be fair the creator of silent hill Keiichiro Toyama left to make the Siren games. I dont know why people here are making horror games into a troll thread.
