The Beginners Guide to MAME

Death:
my A3(US version) works perfectly on Kawaks and Mame without a scratch. Check your version and make sure you have the right filename and are clicking the right one on the menu panel. That trips me up too. Believe me. You can’t change this information/trick it into thinking it is the correct version, manually because it will know by the files it executes.

Question: I saw some CPS 3 titles on MAME recently. Are they actually playable? Last time I heard, there were just attempts at this framework, but nothing successful or sufficient enough for playing.

Deathscythe: Put sfa3.zip in your ROMs dir.

Bear Ryoma: No, CPS3’s encryption hasn’t been broken.

My only recommendation would be to get A3 from another site.

Word. Because when I was running the file it said that there were some missing files. Basically the ones that end with an ‘m’ at the end. And that was like half of them. And the file that I downloaded only had like 9 out of the 20-odd files that I needed.

So, yeah, the site probably sucks for ROMs. Ugh…I hate emulators sometimes. I haven’t done this since SFA2 back in, like, 2k1.

Thanks. How about 3D(especially AM2)?

VF sucks, Soul Blaze and Calibur are incompatible, and some other games 3D too. (Arika… with the exception of Fighting Layer…which has a few music problems.)

…and what do you need to add existing roms to your WinKawaks? I couldn’t put Garou on her.

Do you have the Neo-Geo BIOS?

Yeah… strangely, KoF 98, 2000 work fine, and so does Last Blade. I have the right region also. :looney: btw, I’m running Street Fighter Alpha 2 in my cubicle!

www.mameworld.net/maws/romset/garou

Under “data” you can see what a correct Garou set should look like.

Nothing is working at all. This shit is really getting to me. Damn it all.

EDIT - IT WORKS!!! FINALLY!

EDIT2 - How do I set my buttons up on my stick?

goddammit, just AIM me DS

I’ll read this tonight…

Having abit of Winkawaks trouble: I just got A2 and I have a whole crapload of games to add to Wk, but for some strange reason, they do not seem to be working on Kawaks at all. What I noticed was the config files in another folder with the names of the games that actually work on Kawaks for me. Do I need to find the configs also for my newer games or are they already in the folder?

No, you just need to make sure you have the parent set for each game. A2’s parent set is called “sfa2”. If you have only sfz2j or something like that, it’s not gonna work.

Posted this in the Tech Talk forum but haven’t recieved any answers. So I guess I will post it here too.

So yeah, what’s the best approach? I try to use Fraps or SnagIt and they just cause the game to lag. It won’t record smoothly at all. I can use Fraps fine when recording a vid on Project64 (N64 emulator) but it won’t work for MAME.

Should I be using Fraps or is there a different program better suited for MAME? Or does MAME have some sort of internal recorder that comes packaged with the program?

Thanks.

Fraps only works with DirectX/OpenGL based applications.
I’ve been looking for something to capture MAME stuff as well. Got some A3/LB2 stuff I wouldn’t mind uploading.

Mame90 and the Mame++ are two well known builds with built in AVI recording.
The problem is they’re only compatible with replays from that version. If you made something on an earlier mame, you’re going to be stuck with using something like Camtasia or Hypercam.
For best results with those, try lowering your desktop resolution and bitdepth.

If you’re recording something that’s CPS2/Neo-Geo, you could also try Final Burn Alpha Evolution. It can do replay to AVI.

Got a link to 0.90? I had it, but lost it when I formatted, and the links on darktemplarz and anti3D are both down. How is the quality on the AVI’s that it produces?

I put it back up on Darktemplarz, didn’t realize alot of stuff got lost in the move.

It accepts various codecs, so something lossess(techsmith, huffy, lagarith) will produce a clean picture at 60fps in the game’s native resolution. The codecs you can use are going to depend on the speed of the computer.

I just gave it a try, and the image quality is nice, but when I try to view the videos, they all play in fast motion. Like the recording doesn’t recognize the “throttle” option or something. The video is ‘over’ long before the track reaches the end. The sound plays at normal speed though.

Edit: Just tried it with MAME32k Plus Plus .109.
Works fine. Strange.

Tried those codecs you suggested, but all 3 crash the emulator when I try to hit record.

If you have it try MS-MPEG4 on it’s highest settings (1keyframe per sec, 100% quality at 6Mbps), it won’t be as super-clean but still viewable and can be compressed further.

Or if you’ve got tons of HD space, go with full frames (uncompressed). That’s always caused frame dropping for me though.

Well, I got the recordings to work right on the other version of MAME. The filesize is just way too big and all the codecs I try seem to crash the emulator.
I’m looking to make something I could maybe upload to youtube, not DVD quality stuff.
