The Basketball Thread

Got a BBall tournament this weekend along with DJ the BBQ as well. My brothas from VA/MD are coming down along with my cousins…Cash prize means we are ballin’ HORD! LOL

When players are faster you’ve got to learn to play lateral and with backsteps. You essentialyl want to face up on’em and keep your body in front of them by making yourself as wide as possible stance wide and react almost like a crab running side to side to prevent them from driving past you, forcing them to settle for a jump shot or pass. It can be extremely tiring, and is hard work, but they always say you punish the other team more when your on offense than when your on defense.

As for taller players, center of mass is your friend. You talking street ball or league play? The knee ‘in the ass crack’ so to speak really helps to push them off the block on post up, but refs will call that if being strict. Again you want to play wide stance to prevent them from getting closer, and you want to use leverage to slowly push them away form the basket. On top of that it will make the exert more energy so it may work early on, but later game they won’t be ass effective as fatigue has set in.

Update:

We took the money and bounced! LOL, alot less money than we thought, but double the amount we had to put in to play. Koop has Phil Jackson was hilarious:rofl:

Just purchased some older Converse 0100’s (Navy). They sit low, but not too low so I’m hoping they stick to the floor well. They’re really some nice-looking shoes for Converse, too. I’m EXTRA excited…

Man, I gotta start playing again. Found out that I had my dad’s rock still.

Hey Da, whereabouts do you play?

So…playing a game with the youngins (18-25) and there is something I dont get. Playing D…when you have someone shoot in your face while you have your hand up trying to block the shot…why does that get “OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHS”??? Hell, he shot over me, its not like he dunked on me…reason why I play with the old heads.

ill tell you now from being a shooter that hitting someone wif a quick step… then just quickdrawing out of nowhere while the other person tries to stop and jump 2 blocc the shot will get an ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! every single time… lol thats just the way it is

Yea, but when I block someones shot…you hear NOTHING…I’m like damn, I can beat the ball off the backboard and get nothing but a shot from a out reached hand gets the kids going nuts…
:looney::looney::looney:

I dont know where you play, but everytime I, or anyone else, beat someone’s shit everyone got hype as hell.

I haven’t hooped in over a year though. My boys took me to a court two weeks ago because I needed to clear my head, and balling was past due. I could barely get up anymore and EVERY first step hurt. Shot is there. Handles still there. But I felt like I was moving in slow motion. When I finally got a clean block, it hurt. Wow.

Needless to say, I’m horribly out of shape. Fast food and lazy security job will do that.

I never been big on working out besides the actual activity I was involved in. Always sit-ups, pushups mostly. I’m still slim, but it’s apparent I’ve lost ALOT of steps. Any advice on what exercises will get me back in shape?

I was the same coming from VA to NC…I just worked on getting to the court 3 times a week and it all came back within a month. Just don’t stress ya self and try to get into shape overnight. It takes some time for your body to get back into the ball atmosphere.

My team gets hyped when I make the block, but honestly, I get about 4-5 a day. Trying to get my post game together, my knees are gettin old (hurt most of the day) so I need to rest them.

lol i feel you… at the end of the day the offense is wat sells the tickets lol…
Smh I hate when u get injuries like right at the point when all the training is coming together… Ive been in the gym almost every morning working on my jumpshot… from 5 feet all the way out to the 3range… now that my hand is messed up its kinda holding me back… luckily ima lefty and i hurt my right hand So i have 2 take 1 handed jumpshots which can actually help ur jumpshot…

^^ Gilbert Arenas vs. Deshawn Stevenson all DAY. though now that’s depressing…

Anyone know any good ball-handling/dribbling drills?

Seems like when I do fast breaks or being double team, I just lose my grip and the ball.

lol it sounds like niggas were just hating on you, if you put somebody’s shit on the backboard there’s no way nothign is getting said by peeps on teh side. someone popping it in my face (pause) while i’m D’ing them up is definitely more disheartening imo though.

Sounds like you just need to practicing dribbling more.

On the real, some people are just not made to dribble. To be honest, I don’t really have any serious handles, but I have individual moves I can pull off, and once I get my speed going, I don’t really need fancy dribbling to get to the rim. If it seems hopeless, just stick to posting up and short bursts of dribbling instead of being someone trying to “handle the ball”. Try to work your game around not being able to dribble, and maximize on your other specialties…

I disagree with this, but not entirely. What I mean is if you’re playing extremely high level basketball such as the NBA or Div 1 college then yes I do agree that you don’t need to be able to dribble well. Most likely the team would run a real offense with a real point guard. However that is not the case for most of us. (Unless someone on SRK does play in the NBA and is holding out on us.)

For the most part most of us probably play at the local gym, street court, and with our friends who are probably decent but aren’t exactly Chris Paul. That being said being able to dribble makes you so much more versatile. Me for example I play basketball with my friends and people at the gym or courts in my area. So the people I play with constantly change. They do not know my style nor do I know theirs. By being able to dribble it makes it a lot easier to play with. You can drive and dish or take it to the rim. It gives the team an option. A team with 2-3 guy that can dribble is better than a team with 2-3 guy that a pure 2 guard and can only shoot. Can you imagine a team with no one being able to dribble?

I believe you said that you play high school ball. You yourself must know it pretty easy to guard someone that can only go right or left. Now imagine if that person can only go right or left, and can barley dribble. That makes things extremely easy for the defender.

I remember playing at the park in my high school days, back then at the court there were usually 2-4 big guys 2-4 guys that can decently shoot and maybe 1 guy on each team that had the handles to play the point. Recently every time I hit up the IMA (UW’s gym) it seems that everyone now can dribble no matter their size. ( I would probably assume the NBA and their rule changes within the last 10 years making centers a lot less relevant for this transition.)

My point is basketball has change a lot since the 90’s. Not only in the NBA but everywhere. Dribbling almost a necessity now. Not to the point where you’re the next CP3, but at least to be able to take it to the rim seems pretty vital.

i think it really depends on what you mean by not being able to dribble. our coach used to say that most people only have 2 or 3 confident dribbles with their off-hand at which point it kinda falls apart, i find that to be true but in the half court you only really 2-3 dribbles to get to the basket.

work on your first step to either side, that’s more important than being able to lay some and 1 mixtape shit on somebody imo.

Having a capable or semi-capable offhand is infinitely useful. Everyone naturally plays a person with the expectation that they are going to go to their strong hand being able to go to either hand at will is like a 50-50 mixup of ownage.

imo.

Agreed, to be semi capable with an off-hand works well when you have open space to either side of the basket.

Of course, I’m lazy, and if I don’t have a right-handed layup I’ll just pull up for a jumper instead of taking a left-handed layup…
