The Asuka Kazama Thread

It was an OK situational thing once you stopped being surprised by it. 2 hits was better than the punch followup max-damage-wise even though the combo was simpler, especially if you wanted to tag. In the corner where you always get 2 hits against everyone, it was her best juggle combo until cr.MP oni combos and falling rain tech were found. But now with 2013 damage changes I’m guessing the 2-hit wheel kick combos are quite obsolete.

I can imagine it, crouch fierce looks like one of those moves that might move you forward a lot when it’s canceled.

I’m trying to find more damaging combos off of meaty f+mp

f+mp, mp xx oni, j.hk, hk xx oni cr.hk = 384
f+mp, mp xx oni, j.hk, st.mk xx falling rain cr.hk = 396

Not much of a difference so far as you can tell =(

You can connect f+mp -> mp without a meaty. It’s +6 on hit now (but do cr.mp -> cr.hp instead.)

So you can likely just do f+mp -> s.rh from a meaty overhead, since overhead forces standing. Or cr.hp for an easy link.

has anyone found a consistent way to connect all of asuka’s super art in a juggle, whether it’s from a juggle, wall bounce, ground bounce or started from a partner?

DLK, j.HK, c.MP, link Super. But it’s better to do EX FR, c.HP xx EX Oni I think.

upkicks, f.lk - lp (wait a bit) super. Weird to do at first but I never miss it now.

You can also do upkicks, f+mp > cr.mk xx delay cancel super.

Asuka is so much better than she was. For whatever reason, her damage output has improved on top of everything else, which is weird since it wasn’t an issue before. More importantly, all of her major attack openings are much better. Crouching MP, crouching MP, standing MP–>F, D, DF + HK is her new good opening, and it’s totally consistent against everyone. F + MP, crouching MP, crouching MP, standing MP also works and is easy and consistent. If you’re willing to go for a 1 frame link, crouching MP x 2, crouching HP–>F, D, DF + HK also works. It’s amusing.

Crouching HP is now a way better counter hit combo starter than it was before. It was unsafe as it was, but now that it’s cancelable, you can fish for a counter hit, cancel into HCB+ HK (hold), and if it hits, cancel into a forward dash. If it’s blocked, cancel into a backdash to retreat. Easy set ups include just doing her main combo opening (crouching MP), checking if it hits, if it does, link into combo. If it doesn’t, walk up and throw or hit a super early crouching HP. It also works after crouching MP x 2, so it’s active attack range is pretty nuts.

To illustrate some of her new links, a dumb, long, impractical, new-ish combo is crouching HP (counter hit)–>HCB + HK (hold), forward dash, B + MP–>MK chain–>HCB + HK (hold), forward dash, crouching MP, crouching MP, crouching HP–>F, D, DF + HK, F + LK–>F + LP, standing HK–>HCB + HK, crouching HK. Near corners you can replace the juggle after F, D, DF + HK with standing HK–>HCB + HK, crouching HP–>F, D, DF + PP, crouching HK.

I just love her new counterhit strings so much. The fact that you can scare your opponent from hitting buttons with basically variations of MP, opens up usage of Heron Dance > Sacred Blade > CADC mix ups. If hit, you get a free CH store. If block, you get a free CADC and are at +1. And since you have the fastest normal in the game at a s.LP at 3 frames, you basically get a free +2 frame advantage barring reversals. That just makes her throw game and counter hit game stupidly scary. And the fact her throw is 150 AND recoverable health damage, AND her Heron Dance hitbox got buffed, it really makes up for losing that Hyakujitsuko CADc advantage.

I’m really feeling Asuka ATM, she’s one of the 35 characters I want to play lol, I’ve gone to every board it seems and asked this, but who would you guys pair with her? I was running Kaz x Asuka in training and liked it but I’m a little boared of Kaz and Jin as well.

Any character that has a strong neutral game and decent tag cancel opportunities, so characters like Juri, Sakura, Alisa, Julia, Lars, Nina, Law, shotos, Chun and a few others works pretty well with her.

Asuka has a really really bad neutral game so you want a partner to compensate for that.

I’ve decided to learn Asuka to compliment my Julia since I feel like Poison is cutting it anymore. Can anyone give me a quick rundown on what I should be doing with her? I’ll learn combos hopefully from videos but what I’ve gathered from quickly skimming the forums was that HP is a good cross up tool, her damage output has been increased, and that she has a terrible neutral. Any strings/attacks I should be using in general as well?

You should be getting her in with your point character and staying there by ending every combo possible with falling rain (and maybe sweep afterwards). If you get knocked out switch back to your point character at the first safe opportunity (tag canceling the first hit of cancan on block is safe, sweep-throw is safe-ish against half the cast).

As far as strings:
st.mp > st.mp > st.mp xx cancan on hit/ oni on block
st.mp > cr.mp xx CADC > lp > mp > lp/lk xx cancan on hit/oni on block
st.mp > cr.mp > cr.hp xx cancan (theres a gap between cr.mp and cr.hp on block, but the cr.hp crumples on CH. Also safe against anyone lacking a long range 4f move ie.Vega)
b+mp > mk xx CADC > lp xx mp xx lp/lk xx cancan on hit/oni on block
lp xx mp xx lp xx CADC > lp xx mp xx lp/lk xx cancan on hit/oni on block
f+mk xx mp xx cancan on hit/oni on block
f+hk (safe on block, hops over some lows)

In general, st.mp and cr.mp are really good now as they’re +2 and +3 on block respectively. cr.mk is bad on hit/blockstun but is so low profile during it’s animation that Asuka might as well vanish from the screen, you can use it to get under a lot of standing pokes and force some reversals to whiff on wakeup (poison’s is a prime example). Lastly, heron dance (f+mk > mp) is a great whiff punish AND a cancelable string that starts with a standing low… abuse the hell out of it.

So after any ender that ends with sweep, whiff st mp for a meaty overhead, anyone know the exact frame advantage on hit/block in 2013?

to be honest though, the asuka forum is slackin imo. Lets get it up to the sf4 level. i will be making my contribution soon… but i will need your help as i just picked her up today. Time for an asuka quick reference post. Lots of info in these forums but it is too spread out. i think i want to play asuka as my anchor so im gonna give it a shot in making a quick reference like i am doing with law

My god…then you can option select with a f.lk to beat some reversals like Sagat’s tiger uppercut

Depending on the character you just optionselect with whatever option beats their reversal… cr.mk, counter, f+lk, throw or launcher. The only reversals Asuka can’t flat out beat are grab reversal’s like ex-SPD :confused:
