The Asuka Kazama Thread

she was a turtley character, above average movement with some of the best whiff punishing in the game. you need good feet to play her effectively. she’s one of the best crush characters as well. she also had good oki off throws and of course her parry which stays active for an extremely long time.

with that being said, Asuka’s has one of the worst if not the worst block punishment in the game and is part of the reason why she’s considered lower/mid tier. You won’t win games by blocking but rather evading and crushing. her 50/50 game isn’t particularly strong and relative to the rest of the cast, neither is her wall game.

she’s about average in all other aspects.

of course!

i’m stoked she has a large move list. specialists will have a field day learning the situationals

Oh wait fuck fuck, does the movelist notation flip around when you open the menu up while on 2P side?

Cause I wrote the movelist down but I was going wtf at leg cutter being :df:+:hk:

Unlikely. Special moves are still the same and the guy says Heron Dance is “forward mk” and then proceeds to do it.

They like to put command normals on :f: when they can.

I guess that sounds about right.

So much for making Tekken characters familiar to Tekken players. And its a HK too so Capcom must of thrown out that “you can play the game with a 4 button scheme like in Tekken” thing.

Played her a bit at WNF. She was my main in Tekken 5: DR and Tekken 6. I wasn’t by any means a beast, but I was a solid player at the arcades.

Good news: Capcom mostly kept true to her roots. In Tekken, Asuka is a very heavy yomi, prediction-based character. Her pokes were not toptier, but she had CRAZY high/low crush moves. Predict your opponent was gonna go for a low? Low crush it with B+3. Her whiff punishing was solid and she had the best counter in the game. Capcom version’s of Asuka tried to follow the same mold…she is a very “mindgame” character.

Bad news: She fucking sucks.

OK, I wouldn’t say she fucking sucks, but she is GIMICKY at best. First of all, in such a footsie heavy game, her footsies are ASS. Everyone who plays her in Tekken should know that her st. roundhouse is godlike…in this game it is absolute shit. Her light attack pokes are also very bad (she has very short limbs). Her main go-to move is probably df+mk, but in comparison to beasts like Sagat and Vega she has no chance playing footsies with the majority of the cast.

She has a pretty good anti-air off her F+LK (which is her B+3 move in Tekken). You can follow it up with a nice juggle for good damage.

Her counter (QCF+K) is decent, but not nearly as good as it was in Tekken. If the opponent is mindless rushing you down, use this to get them off.

She has a very quick overhead (F+MP) that ground bounces if you land a counterhit on the opponent (good for people who like to mash on wakeup).

Here’s what pissed me off the most. Her crush game is complete ass (she was the queen of crushing in Tekken). You guys remember her F+2 in Tekken? Godlike in that game…ass in this game. It can get beat by crouching jab. As I said before, her F+LK is pretty solid if you want to crush some moves. Her HCF+P can be used to crush high moves, but it has really slow start up and you can’t really follow up with anything…

The games throw system really hurts her too. She really relies on mixups to get her damage, so having a very shitty throw range hurts her deeply in that department.

All in all, her pokes are just way too bad to make her viable competitively. She has difficulty getting in on fireball characters (while other Tekken chars like Hwo and Kazuya just rape fireball characters). Once she gets in, she really doesn’t have much pressure to stay in. She has okay mixup, but other Tekken characters just have WAY more options.

In the end, I was just using someone good like Sagat as point, tagging in Asuka after a juggle, have her do her combo, then immediately tag out to Sagat after I knock them down lol. She seriously felt like dead weight TBH. I played other Tekken characters like King and Kazuya and they were SOOOOO much better. They do what Tekken characters are suppose to be good at:getting in and mixing your ass up.

I asked Seth Killian at the end of the night on how you’re suppose to use Asuka. I think he said it the best: “Lili is a lot better.” Lili is pretty damn good with meter haha.

If you like low tier, want to beat newbs in casuals…play Asuka. If you want to win tournaments…play someone else. Heads up: King is a fucking beast. Probably my new main haha.

Well time to abandon this ship.

well as an asuka main in tekken I’m used to working harder for wins

i say bring it on

Oh, sad to read this, but… Anyway, I still want to pair her with Ibuki as my secondary team.

I’ve seen several Tekken people write “crush.” What is crush?

crush system was what I was going to mention in this thread. It is actually asuka’s main strategy with good players.

Actually, CRUSH is more a property not a system. Basically, the crush property of a move affects whether or not a certain move will beat out others. If you are familiar with Soul Calibur 2, it had the same sort of system. Let’s assume that the character who was at -1 is Law. Let’s also say that the predicted the opponent would do a low and the opponent does do a low instead of a high jab. If the Law player does U/F+4, no matter HOW fast the low is, it will ALWAYS be crushed by the flipkick. This is because U/F+4 CRUSHES some highs and lows. The crush system works so that some moves will always have priority over others. To make it more realistic, I suppose. It all balances out in the end. Ever gotten pissed off at previous Tekkens when you did a jumping move and some stupid low jab hit you out of it? That’s the purpose of the crush system; to stop that.

Fixed the notation for Exorcisor’s follow ups. Speaking of which, when I read “Raging Storm” I immediately thought “Geese!”

So, if I understand this correctly, Crush is essentially a priority system? Interesting. As far as I can tell, there is nothing like that in SFxT, and it follows normal 2D rules of hitboxes and active frames.

Crushing is not really priority, priority doesn’t exist in Tekken games

Crushing is a yomi type of a meta, “i know you will throw out a low so I will throw out a hopkick”

in its simplest terms, a Crush is evading a move and hitting your opponent at the same time

In SF terms, Asuka likely has complete upper or lower, or full body invincibility on certain specials.

Well that’s a shame about Asuka… hopefully she has been buffed up a bit in builds after the one S.Kill has… I probably will take his advice with Lili anyway… I’ll run Cammy or Ken on point and have Lili as a second… her dps seem to do insane dmg and juggle off each other… ex dp, ex dp, ex dp reg dp.

Still not going to give up on Asuka but she was one of the 4 I was going to play anyway (others being Ken, Cammy, Lili) and if she’s clearly weaker… also very interesting in Juri, Jin and Ling now too.

Though we can always hope it’s an Adon situation… when Justin said Adon was ass, he was ass, he was buffed in retail.

Now, see, this is where I think Gems are going to come into play heavily.

If Asuka’s normals don’t seem up to scratch, then perhaps it’s worth considering either defense gems to buy time for finding opportunities, or stack meter gems to make the few opportunities count.

Btw we’ll probably be getting an Asuka demonstration from the games radar team very soon, n3ss the guy who leaked the Super roster (can’t believe how many ppl credit lupinko with that leak) asked on neogaf for some characters to demo, Asuka is way out in front with Steve and Ling behind her.

I really hope that’s true. Been waiting to see some decent gameplay footage of her because I have absolutely no idea about how she plays. I never really played Tekken so beside knowing that she has counters and such, I don’t really know she can do and what to expect.

Despite not playing Tekken, I’ve always been attracted to her character design, so I’ll play her regardless of her being bad or not. It sure suck hearing about her being that bad, but I really can’t see myself playing this game without playing Asuka as it is one of my only drive to play this game (That and Chun being a motion character now).

Problem with this is: why would you use your gems loadout to cover Asuka’s flaws when you could simply pick another better character, like Lili, and use the gems to enhance in the things she’s already good at to make them better. If what mooyang says is true, she will always feel like a dead weight when compared to other characters…

I dunno…maybe because…you like the character? It’s so sad to see everyone give up so easily, especially when the game isn’t even out yet.

this…those are the worst kind of players in my opinion…make the character work for you…if you like them stick with them…
