"The answer lies in the heart of battle." Ryu Video Thread

Vid is nice, but vortex characters made the risk reward of fireballs skewed to shit… A vortex character with 1 point of life could kill a full life ryu, solid play and proper guessing was not rewarded well enough in 2012…

Supposedly, ultra is more footsie based, this style of play should become more viable…

I am looking for strategical advices on the Bison match-up. I mostly know what punish what, option select and this kind of stuff but I am unsure in some situation what my mind set should be. For example, Bison has a moderate life lead and is camping in the middle of the screen with meters and my Ryu is close to the corner. His Ex kick is go good now that a fireball will result in an easy 150 damage. I cant really jump, either. Only thing it seem i can do is adjust my range respective to Bison positioning. When I get to close, he can simply go for a lk kick. Not sure exactly what do to to provoke a mistake or pressure him safely.

Another situation that I am unsure what to do is when Bison has you cornered and is just standing there outside of sweep range. I know I have to be patient, mostly block but how am i supposed to improve my situation, provoke mistake, get Bison guessing. I really feel I have to improve my positional game against Bison and I am often losing the strategical battle. If anybody has good advice go ahead

Im not a Ryu main but here is a video of me trying to zone hugo. I was wondering if anyone could tell me some more details about the match up and maybe give me some tips.

Thanks.

You dead a reasonable job against the Hugo. I’ll give you 2 general zoning tips.

  1. Always anti air with mp srk or hp srk. Medium punch srk has 1 more frame of invincibility but if you can time it right, hp srk does more damage.
  2. Near the 36 second mark, he jumped, you srk’d, whiffed and he punished you. The first mistake of course was using light srk but the bigger lesson
is to recognize a certain range. All characters can do this, although some characters have better jump arcs/jumping normals for this technique.
What happens is that at this range, if they jump and press no button and you srk (doesnt matter which version), your srk will whiff. If they do decide to stick
out a button in the air, your srk will catch them. But this creates a guessing game for you of whether to srk or not. So at these ranges you’re either gonna
wanna move out range, or use normals for anti air, as the recovery on normals is much better than on an srk.

hope this helps a bit!

Hey guys, could you rate my play? What’s has been done wrong and right in these matches? There’s a total of 8 matches, if you guys could pick some random matches and try to comment on it, i would appreciate it a lot!

Some of my mistakes i’ve already recognized: everytime i tried to preemptively focus his dive kicks, i ended getting grabbed or even combo’ed. I’ve lose a lot of opportunities to punish with DP > U1, mainly when punishing his shoulder attack with a sweep instead of a DP.

safe jump on barlog with ryu for ultra

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUFu07WnDUc i just made this small combo video first time just messing around.

I understand you were just messing around and you might know ALL of this stuff already, but maybe I’ll say something interesting to you or someone else who sees you vid here. My thoughts are based around playing an effective ryu as opposed to making an awesome combo vidja…

Some thoughts on your vid AJ.

combo 1: I’d prefer you do crouch strong twice into crouch roundhouse. It does more damage and is a better frame trap.

combo 2: I’m not sure, but I think it does more damage if you skip the lvl1 focus attack and go straight into ultra (if you do that, switch from ex dp to jab dp and save the meter.) If you just wanted to do an uncommon combo, you can EX dp fadc into a jab dp then ultra 1.

combo 3: Save the meter and just do a jab dp.

combo 4: Replace your crouch fierce attacks with close standing fierce for 10 more damage each and save your 1 meter by not using ex red focus attack (just fadc into your next normal for less scaling.)

combo 5: Save your 1 meter and just fadc instead of ex red focus attacking.

combo 6: Jump fierce into standing close fierce xx ex dp fadc ultra 2 is ridiculous damage mid screen. There are also character specific ways to land ultra 2 standing off of an fadc’d regular hadoken, but I don’t know those…

combo 7: On like maybe around half the cast, you can save 2 bars and link ex hadoken into ultra 1 by cancelling into ex hadoken from close standing forward (medium) kick.

combo 8: You don’t have to be in the corner for that combo.

combo 9: It’s pretty optimized. You can add a crouch strong to the start of that combo on some characters. Also, if you can do that, than starting the combo with a forward fierce into the added crouch strong version of the combo maximizes your meter gain.

combo 10: I’m not 100% sure, but I believe as long as you’re opponent is cornered, crouch fierce never misses so you might want to replace the crouch strong with crouch fierce (of course spacing is important when deciding which to use.)

combo 11: Combo-ing into ex tatsu link ultra 1 in the corner makes stronger combos than any ultra 2 combo you could make for the same amount of meter used. I think Jump fierce, close stand fierce xx hadoken fadc close stand fierce xx ex tatsu link ultra 1 is ryu’s strongest generic combo.

combo 12: The short and the jab scaled the combo, so you may have wanted to save the meter and used short tatsu to save the meter. The combo you did was the optimized damage option for your comfirm though.

combo 13: Pay attention to the corner and don’t combo yourself into it. Forward tatsu would have kept you out, but when in doubt use short tatsu (at the tip of crouch forward, short tatsu misses; at that point opting for a hadoken or ex hadoken combo is better than putting yourself in the corner.)

combo 14: Meter drain combo. Nothing to say.

combo 15: Optimized hit confirm. Nothing to say.

combo 16: Sometimes the game can’t figure out which stand jab to use and you will get a close jab when you needed a far resulting in a whiff. You can avoid that by not standing during that combo.

combo 17: Optimized cross up combo. Good for a punish, but no time to hit confirm.

combo 18: Save your meter and just fadc the hadoken into your next normal. There’s no need to do a hit confirm combo after the fadc (in your case the ex red focus lvl 1 crumple,) just go straight into fierce xx hadoken to minimize scaling.

combo 19: Save the meter and use strong shoryuken. The extra damage is negligible compared to the utility and threat of the meter (unless of course, that sliver of damage is what you need to take the round.)

combo 20: Same as combo 16. You can also just skip the second jab and link the Shoryuken.

Haven’t seen anyone post this yet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iai9y7ni0to
Its a good watch, all wonderful punishes, reads and traps.

@Finkledoodoo‌

Why was the Ryu player whiffing Metsu Shoryuken after all those baits? I really don’t understand what the deal was in the last clip, was he setting the trap so that if the other Ryu player jumped he’d get hit by the U2? Why didn’t he just block the hadoken?

Idk, probably just trolling. The last clip could have been some super advanced set up that messed up his opponent’s escape options or he was just being an ass. Until he explains it himself, we’ll just have to wonder about it. Kaizen knows a bunch of odd set ups, maybe he can explain it. You should message him…

Kaizen was the first person I thought of when I saw the whiff U2’s, I figured it was his set up . . .

Hi Thread,

I’m not dancing around issues and avoiding direct answers. I’m directing people to speak to me verbally on XBL where I’ll invest hours, if need to answer all questions and prove all arguments. There was a question about Daigo’s mistake which I addressed. Then I addressed the followup questions. Lastly I directed people to meet me on XBL in a party if they want to go over more while leaving the forum with some extra information.

P.S. A lot of people including myself prefer to communicate verbally because something spoken with a non-confrontational tone can be easily be perceived as confrontational the reader.

My Fightsstyle vs Zangief

I’ve, as a Gief player and Ryu player, have been looking for a lot of feedback on the Gief/Ryu match. I actually just asked about it in the match-up thread. Finkledoodoo gave me a few things. Anything you can add about specifics of the match?

Also, all 22 colors for Ryu’s new outfit.

@ 3 minute mark vs a friend who plays a solid ryu

Keep finding ryu too boring since I’ve been using him for years, the only thing I find interesting any more is trying to frame trap people with dumb stuff
