"The answer lies in the heart of battle." Ryu Video Thread

How should I go about practicing to right these mistakes? My SRK abusing is starting to become habitual, which is quite bad.

Watch videos of Daigo like Evo 2009 Daigo vs JWong (Boxer), Daigo vs Mago (Sagat) series, etc. See how he plays his solid Ryu. 100% safe, little to no use of gimmicks, proper zoning, spacing, footsies, BnB combos, use of hit confirms, safe jumps, cross ups, pressure game, etc.

First order of business is to not do anything random, at all. No random dps when you get pressured, no random full screen tatsus, no random jumping around the screen for the hell of it. Everything you do should have a purpose. If you don’t know what to do, just block.

Okay, thanks. this video seemed very helpful on how to play a zone game, so I’ll try some of that in training. I think I’ll stay offline for a while to prevent forming more bad habits.

(not me :P)

Ok, I know I play pretty bad here… But to be honest, I wasn’t that much into the game until a month and a half or so, that I really started to focus on playing Ryu.

I know his basics, since Ive been playing Ryu forever, and that really fucked me up, cause I was avoiding the fireball war at all costs here and now I know that my strategy being decent (pushing sagat, getting on his face and pressure his wake up) wasnt the absolute best and my execution of this strategy SUCKED! =p

Ok, now Ive been figuring a couple things out, I didn’t avoid his fireballs correctly, I rushed him too quickly and I was too jump happy, I dont think he jumped at me for free too much which is good, I cornered him almost every round, which is also good, I cornered myself one time, which of course was pretty stupid. I missed a bit too many links and I wasted a little bit too much ex.

2nd round when he focus my cr.fwd and I canceled into ex-srk it was a mistake of course.

Anything that you guys can help me with will be appreciated. Maybe not so much strategy, but tactics, which things I shouldve done in certain spots that are frequent in this match up.

Thanks !

 1. Don’t miss links. This screws up your pressure game and your pressure game is basically the only way you’re getting damage on Sagat.
 2. Stop jumping at him. You can use yomi and predict him throwing a fireball, but make 100% sure you guess right, otherwise you’re going to eat a TU trade into f+HP , U1. Which happened a number of times that match.
 3. Much too meter burn happy. You’re inside cr.MK range but you wanna throw a ex hado?
 4. Not enough safe jumps. It didn’t look like you were timing your safe jumps correctly against Sagat, hence why almost all of his reversal TU’s hit you.
 5. Unsafe random reversal dp’s is never a good idea.
 6. Once you have a health lead, feel free to turtle. Just like Ryu has to get in to do real damage to Sagat, Sagat has to get in to do real damage to Ryu.
 7. When playing the fireball war, Sagat is ofc going to win since his fireballs come out faster than yours. Don’t play to win this war. Instead, make his fireball spam into your advantage by focusing some, and ducking or neutral jumping the rest (depending if he does high/low shot). Eventually he will stop and move at least slightly closer to you, usually just outside jumpin range, or at max jumpin range. Now this is where you start to play a footsies game, which I saw none of.
 8. No footsies game, which is where Ryu > Sagat.

tl,dr: More footsies, more pressure, correct use of option selects (ie: safe jumps), and less scrubby tactics like unsafe reversal dp.

Second day of me playing Ryu.

So let me set the tone first,

I just started fucking around with Ryu. I played him a bit in Vanilla( like 2 weeks) but dropped him for Akuma. I’m maining Guy in supa, but Guy has really bad matchups so instead of holding dat shit I’m toying with the idea of having Ryu as a secondary. For all those painful matchups against downback characters, which is like everyone >_>, that I can’t seem to overcome with Guy. I have a feeling I’m using Ryu wrong though.

Anyway, here’s a vid me against some other Ryu.

After some leaderboard Matlocking, I figured out this guy is #29 Ryu in the world on XBL(Also holy fuck Daigo’s a couple thousand BP ahead of #2). I know it doesn’t really mean much, but Imma brag about it to some friends regardless. :bgrin:

Mestu Shoryuken 4 life BTW : )

Feel free to rip me a new one, or give me some advice. Much appreciated and thanks in advance.

^Hey I think I’ve faced you a couple times in ranked. That Guy is pretty sick, I feel bad about scrubbing out that last match…

I think it’ll be beneficial for those posting online replays to also turn on input display.

hehehe, I remember. Thanks man, your Ryu was nothing to sneeze at.

Will try to keep them on from now on.

I noticed you use focus attacks a lot. They’re punishable with solar plexus punch. This guy didn’t seem to know that but just watch out for it. Best to just poke with c.mk xx FB. Can you walk forward then instantly c.mk xx FB or do you pop out a DP instead? Its good to practice for pressuring I find. Dash c.mk xx FB works as well when you notice that both of you are dancing in the middle. It has a time and a place like everything else.
I don’t know how other people will agree with my advice but I’ll try to anything instead jump in.

Thx for posting links , I dont like searching

It seems almost everytime someone beats Gameinn(aka Daigo), it will be uploaded to youtube. I’m guessing Daigo doesn’t bother to upload matches, at least not that many. Most of his wins from these youtube videos from what I’ve seen have come from longer sets with other players.

Air VS Daigo complete set on his account

Who’s air ? He does play a great Ryu game

Air is the gray Ryu. Look up SF4 Air on YT.

I don’t know. It just doesn’t seem like it’s daigo playing unless he’s using alt 1. Alt 2 seems to be the friend.

I realize that the guy could be having slumps. But daigo always seemed to favor that alt when available in SF4. And gameinn is using it now and then. So it would make sense.
