I really don’t know where they’re going with the Negi and Asuna thing now, it’s looking more and more like he has feelings for her (can’t say how she feels totally since we have a fake running with them ATM) but Arika was also revealed to be his mom, which IIRC makes he and Asuna related.
Unless of course it’s gonna turn out she isn’t blood related to the royal family and is a stereotypical “magical girl from a lost civilization” that they found on the doorstep.

Yeah, there is noticeable development later on for both Hanamichi and Rukawa later on in the series, but some of the later games (though they sure take a while) are worth the watch.
