So, with all the discussions going on around comic-book-land, such as the Director’s Cut of Watchmen, Alan Moore’s GL Tales that set up “Sinestro Corps War” and “Blackest Night”, and Marvel’s recent acquisition of Marvelman/Miracleman, Alan Moore is still king shit of fuck mountain in the comics world.
not bad for a crazy eccentric british dude who idolizes Aleister Crowley, and worships a winged snake.
I was at a used bookstore today and found a hardcover copy of The Mirror of Love in pretty nice condition for only four bucks! I didn’t buy it, though. I should have. It was a great deal. I guess I just wasn’t in the mood for gay love poetry. Maybe some other time?
His works? You make him sound like Mark Twain or Ernest Hemingway. He writes comic books for crying out loud. A lot of good ones. Some not as good as most people think.
From Hell is my favorite of his works. That scene where he looked through a window and saw a modern family (which was based on an actual account of a guy saying he saw Jack Ripper’s ghost murdering someone) is pretty haunting. I think the concept of all time existing at the same time made more sense in this book than it did in Watchmen. Watchmen’s great too of course but I still prefer From Hell.
Killing Joke is one of the best Joker stories ever IMHO.
I have many of Alan Moore’s works in my collection. I don’t have every single work he’s ever produced, but I think I have the majority of works that have been kept in print. Mostly, I am missing his more obscure works, the one-issue works and short stories and early 2000AD works. I am going to look up his list of works on Wikipedia right now so I can see which of his works I am missing.
It turns out Alan Moore has written lots of works over the years. Many of his earlier works seem difficult to obtain unless you happen to know where to look and are willing to pay.
I hope the day comes when all of Alan Moore’s works are readily available in print. I greatly enjoy reading his works. Most of which are better than most people think.
Alan Moore stuff I own ATM:
Swamp Thing: All 6 books collecting his run on the series
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Vol. 1 & 2
V for Vendetta
A DC TPB collecting some of his stories for DC comics from the 80s
I’m thinking of getting Promethia eventually, but Tom Strong…couldn’t get into it myself sad to say ^_^; nice premise though.
I have all of his Green Lantern stories (“Tygers”, “Mogo Doesn’t Socialize” and “In Blackest Night”, in their original formats. I have a TPB of Watchmen, and the recent hardcover (NOT the absolute). I have the recent hardcover of The Killing Joke, and the first Swamp Thing Hardcover. I also have LOXG Volume 1 in TPB.
I have both issues of “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?”, in the original issue format, as well as “For the Man who has Everything”
And I have the DCCP Superman/Swamp Thing (#85), Moore’s Second Swamp Thing issue (The Anatomy Lesson), and one of his later ones.
I will be buying the Superman Hardcover (Man of Tomorrow and Man who has Everything) as soon as I can afford to.
If you couldn’t get into Tom Strong, I doubt you’d enjoy Promethea. It only starts out as a seemingly straightforward science hero story. About 75-80% of it is basically an immaculately lavishly illustrated treatise on the Kabbalah and Moore’s spiritual philosophies and beliefs. It’s very heady (literally- lots of talking heads), very dense stuff.
As long as we’re talking about which Alan Moore works we own, I guess I’ll unzip my pants and show off my penis. Here’s what I got:
1963 (All the issues)
Across the Universe: The DC Universe Stories of Alan Moore (It’s the one with all his assorted DC work)
Another Suburban Romance
Alan Moore’s Writing for Comics
Alan Moore: Wild Worlds (It’s got a bunch of his random Image/WildStorm stuff, such as the Voodoo miniseries, Deathblow, and WildC.A.T.s/Spawn crossover. This is for completists only, because that WildC.A.T.s/Spawn is complete trash.)
The Killing Joke
Captain Britain (I got these obscure '90s Marvel reprints of his entire run)
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (v.1, 2, Black Dossier, Century: 1910)
Lost Girls (Yeah, I actually splurged on the hardcover box set)
Promethea (All of it)
Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?
Swamp Thing (All of it)
Terra Obscura (v.1 and 2)
Tom Strong (I only have volumes 1-3; haven’t gotten around to the rest of it yet.)
Tomorrow Stories (All of the issues)
Top 10 (Both hardcovers, plus The Forty-Niners HC and Smax in issues)
WildC.A.T.s: Homecoming
WildC.A.T.s: Gang War
V for Vendetta (I only have the normal TRADE, BABY but someday I will have the ABSOLUTE, BABY)
Watchmen (I got the Absolute Edition, the normal HC that was released this year, and the first three issues of it. Used to have a paperback copy but I gave it to a friend.)
From Hell (Sano’s favorite Alan Moore work)
The Complete Alan Moore’s Future Shocks (early 2000 AD short stories with various artists)
The Ballad of Halo Jones (Fantastic 2000 AD science fiction saga with Ian Gibson art)
The Complete D.R. & Quinch (Outrageous dark humor comic with science fiction twist and art by Alan Davis)
A Small Killing (Woefully underlooked original graphic novel)
America’s Best Comics TPB (collects the ABC 64-Page Giant, The Many Worlds of Tesla Strong, and the ABC Sketchbook)
American Flagg! #s 21-27 (he did the back-ups in 21-26 and the entirety of 27)
Skizz (Kind of a British version of E.T. with Jim Baikie art)
One day soon, my man, one day soon… They will return in print and we will climb the highest of mountains and shout, “KIMOTA!” from the top of our lungs… One day…
