I don’t think that the list was ‘total’ crap, but mk1, 2, sc1 and 2 all in the top 10!? Ummmmmm… Yeah I don’t quite know how to compute that.
Besides KoF, where is Last Blade 2, that’d definately be in any top 20 I voted for. And I thought the perennial fan favorite Tekken was TTT.
Lastly, some of the info provided with the games in the list are blatantly wrong, like in the CvS2 blurb it says that picking A-Groove is like using an ST groove.:looney:
EDIT: LMFAO if you check the honorable mention, the two KoFs that get mention are '99 and Maximum Impact.
HA I that thought that was some funny shit. They also said " S-Groove performed like the King of Fighters series, K-Groove was similar to Samurai Shodown, and N-Groove was somewhere in between all of these." iirc S & N grooves are from KOF97 right?
S is based on pre-97(with elements of all 3 years, but really resembling Extra in 97/98), N is based on post-97(up until they dropped the stock system in 99).
Okay. If WW is such an appallingly horrific choice that you don’t believe it needs to be in the top twenty, let alone number one, what should be number one? The most techically sound game? There’s really no criteria for the ‘best’ anyway. The ‘best’ for what?
Exactly. A game getting on the list because it’s a great game and a game getting on the list for being revolutionary is apples to oranges. The ‘most influential/revolutionary’ and ‘best’ can’t coexist in the same list and really make sense.
The fact that Tekken 5 ranked higher than VF4 had me scratching my head for a bit. But of course MK2 ranking higher than those two almost made me drink some draino. And ST not ranking anywhere near the top 5? Bullshit. Hell, MvC2 should have ranked as well in the top 5.
The problem lies in the application of getting the votes for the games. As well as how we define “best”.
If we only allow you to vote one game then people would just be voting on their one game and not spreading their votes to other games that they recognize as being good games and deserve to place. Say I vote for 3s for number 1. How would I get across that I feel that MvC2, CvS2, GG and whatever else deserve to be right below that? I can’t, unless the poll is created in a way to reflect multiple placings. But then how would we tally that up? MvC2 could have 10 votes in first, 10 votes in 2nd, 10 votes in 3rd etc… Which place would it achieve? What if it beats out all of the other games in each placing? What then?
Determining which game is the best via a poll is a flawed project from the get go.
So then how else would we get it? Graphics? Combos? Tournaments held?
What of Sales? That way we can reflect the popularity of several games when they were in their prime? But if their prime is past and sequels have been made that fixed the flaws in the previous game which should get the nod? Say SF2WW had 1,000,000 sales, but SSF2T only had 20,000 sales. Which is better? The one that sold more? Or the one that improved upon the game but for whatever reason didn’t sell as well?
Keeping that in mind, I can’t really argue against the list. Determining the best game ever is impossible due to peoples tastes and what not. And the list isn’t that bad since each game on that list has been popular at one time or another.
u could have a system where everyone chooses 5 different games based on these 5 categories (feel free to discuss/add categories).
which fighting game (do they think) has the most players who play that game CURRENTLY.
most balanced fighting game in there opinion (most playable/winnable characters).
what fighting game do they spend most of there time playing.
most revolutionary fighting game in there opinion.
which game made them start playing fighting games in the first place.

have every person choose a total of 5 different games each of them being there for a different category. then in the end, the game that is mentioned the most gets placed higher on the chart than the others.
this system allows each game that doesnt make it to the top spot on the overall list have a chance to hold the top spot for each of the 5 categories.
i think that’ll have much better results than having just a linear 1-20 list.
I understand it is a voted on list, but any list that has ST, CVS2, and MvC2 out of the top 10, and below SC2, SMB, KI, and two Mortal Kombat’s is suspect.
Read->Comprehend->Post. Like I said, SF2 was undeniably the most influential fighter of all time, but best? Hell fucking no. From today’s standpoint, World Warrior is not all that great. Your whole rant has nothing to do with judging the quality of a game. A game is good if it’s good and bad if it’s bad, judging the game by the fever surrounding it and its community is flawed. The worst game ever could have a great following and fun community, but that doesn’t make it a good game.
When I think “best” in terms of games I think most fun, pretty much. There’s other factors of course, such as design, balance, innovation, etc. but in the end it all adds up to “fun.” Of course, this makes the poll completely a matter of opinion, but I doubt from a modern standpoint that many would consider WW the #1 most fun fighting game; it’s in that spot primarily on the merit of its legacy.
Like I said, the real problem is the poll makers’ failure to define “best,” which means everyone uses their own definition and poll results become meaningless.
Your correct in everything you said polarity. I mean putting SC2 and SC ahead of 3rd strike and tekken and mortal kombat ahead of motw…wtf lol. I agree with this list as far as the legacy on games go but this kinda reminds me of a list we would see on the fighters generation which is kinda like mainstream popular choices but not exactly the right ones.
Yeah. So. That game that was well balanced, well designed, and possibly the most innovative fighting game of all time, has no place as number one? Tell you what. I /only/ have fun playing HF and Primal Rage. That obviously makes them the best. You can’t qualifiy ‘most fun’ as best. Period.
Like I said before, you can’t have a list filled with some games because of their technical proficiency, some games because of their scene, and some games because of innovation and expect it to make sense.
We all know how great WW was, there is no denying. But how many times in the past 10 years have you played WW over ST or HF with friends competitively? Since WW is better, you should play that.
Uhh, who cares? This is not the end of the world or something. It’s just that more people like SC, MK and Tekken than they do 2D fighters. Seriously, though, why is Killer Instinct so high up there, though? That bothers me. Everything else (minus T1, the absence of TTT, MK1, and Killer Instinct) seems okay to me. I personally think the top 5 should be ssbm, vf4 evo, ST, garou and ss2 (with 3s, MVC2 and CVS2 being close behind). I personally don’t think MVC and CVS2 are the best fighting games around (top 10 maybe, but not top 3), and 3s, well, I don’t really know, but it’s probably my #6 favorite. Yes, I really like smash. Only fighting game that I can play casually with some of my friends ans seriously with others. THAT is what a good fighting game needs. Accessibility as well as challenge. Most 2D fighters lack that nowadays because fans want them to be as un-accessible as possible. VF4 doesn’t really count because even though some things are difficult to do, there is a training mode that helps out, and once you start knowing the game, it doesn’t become as hard. Plus, the easier characters (Chans, Bryants) do just as well as the harder ones (Shun, Lei, Vanessa). And don’t come up with the Cable stuff. He gets brutally murdered by any decent rushdown where I live.
