When I got Castlevania IV that was one of the happiest days of my life. That game is STILL on point and has actually aged really well IMO. People can say what they want about Symphony Of The Night, which is still a great game, but Castlevania IV really took the atmosphere, graphics, music, and level design to the next level. Konami was such a great company back in the day, it’s utterly disappointing to see what they’ve become.
You know, even though I do have a 3-year long save on glitching the fuck outta SotN with almost 280% map completion…
I agree. SCV4 is the best in the whole damn series.
SCV4 is my favorite, as well. But I still haven’t played SOTN or anything after. I’m actually thinking about getting SOTN for PS3 or PS4 to go ahead and finally play through it. And then the GBA Castlevanias on the Wii U.
Illusion of Gaia? Standard action-adventure RPG (real-time combat like Zelda/Mana) that isn’t part of the usual FF/Zelda/Chrono Trigger/Secret of Mana SNES RPG library.
Well believe it or not I didn’t actually play a lot of RPGs back on the 16-bit days. I didn’t get into RPGs until I got my ps1 so excluding FF6,chrono,phantasy star and the big name classics I didn’t play a lot of 16-bit era RPGs.
I didn’t see it mentioned. Soul Blazer (action RPG). So fucking good in all departments. It’s the “unofficial” prequel to Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma. Act Raiser is amazing. Very unique…kinda like Sim City with side scrolling action.
I’d mention Secret of Mana, but if you don’t know about that, you should be burned alive.
I bought a Super Famicom with this idea, but unless you read Japanese or are REALLY hard up to play a certain game, I don’t think it’s worth it. I wanted an affordable Mega Man X2 and 3, but to me it’s not the same when everything is in Japanese.
Over 20 years later and A Link to the Past is still the best Zelda game and Super Metroid still the best Metroid.
What I miss most about the 16-Bit era though, is being able to rely on certain brands when I was looking for quality.
Konami and Capcom don’t mean the same anymore when I look at their logos.
Retrogaming nowadays is fucking awesome though. There’s top notch emulators out there, and I fucking love playing through old games with the almighty Playstation controller.
Stock Nintendo and Sega controllers were fucking garbage.
