Tennessee Thread - We have Arcade Edition. Come play with us

Dear God, please don’t bring this type of conversation or comparison up again. It polarizes everyone who doesn’t play BOTH games at a competitive level, and it’s obvious that very few people are willing to do that, whether they be Tekken or SF players. It’s just going to start stupid controversy that keeps players on either side of the fence from trying and playing the other one. Example:

I believe he was referring to competitive play, not people who button mash. The “basics” in competitive Tekken play, even when you’ve only played a week, include spacing, sidestepping, throw-breaking, and juggling, all 4 of which no one here in Mid TN has learned correctly. There’s no one here in MidTN that took the time to learn proper backdashing or even simple backdashing that moves them away, they just say “It’s too hard lololol” Next, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LEARN OR UNDERSTAND FRAME DATA. Just like someone knows he/she can punish a Juri divekick or a Bison cr.rh with cr.mp or cr.mk in whatever situation, you can learn Tekken the EXACT same way. You don’t need to know numbers! Anakin is the best example of this–considered probably the most difficult to beat player in the States and knows NO FRAME DATA. ZERO. I swear he doesn’t even know a common jab is 10 frames.

And the execution difference between the games is irrelevant. Most people can’t even touch Viper’s required execution in SF4, but she’s brought up as an example for some reason. I wouldn’t bring up Nina’s combos as an example – knowing I’m probably the only one in all of TN who can do them makes them irrelevant to the topic. Hell, it takes some people a damn hour to learn how to perform a “while rising” move in Tekken. Just let go of the stick/pad and hit a button before you stand up. That’s just like I couldn’t even do a super from P1 side in 3S right off the bat cuz I kept letting go of the stick instead of grinding it into the corner. And that’s not a comparison, more like a “There are too many variables to consider one harder than another.” when it comes to execution.

In general, I’ve found people who view themselves as “elite” in Tekken say that it’s “hard” in order to boast on themselves, raise themselves up, or make it a challenge to newcomers. On the other hand, newbies will say it’s hard because they don’t want to put time into it. None of it is really THAT damn hard in either game; you just can’t have one game’s mentality and try to apply it to another game right off the bat. Anyone in SF4 who says “Viper is hard” can be told “OK, if your execution is good, go do this in Tekken” and anyone in Tekken who says “Nina is hard” can be told “OK, go do this in SF4.”

(and Jason, I know you weren’t the one to bring this up lolol, so don’t feel like I’m directing it at you. Just trying to kill the discussion cuz it’s useless and counterproductive from every angle. I would also point out that the dominant controller in the USA for Tekken is ps2/ps3 pad while SF4 is stick… just makes the comparison that much more retarded to make)

The biggest step in learning how to play Tekken is actually taking the time out of your busy Street Fighter schedule to sit down and take it seriously imo. The movelists for characters are a little longer than SF movelists so I guess it can be intimidating in that regard, but come on, most entries on the in-game Tekken movelists are there to tell you “oh yeah, standing LK and forward LK and forward+down LK do different things! surprise!”

Honestly the biggest difference is that you have to actually work for your multi-hit combo strings. There’s no Ultra to guarantee a nasty 12-hit big damage combo with just a double qcf+PPP. That isn’t to say you can’t guarantee yourself a big nasty combo for huge damage, but to pull it off you actually have to understand the timing of your character’s moves transition into each other and where the hit registers.

Playing Tekken is like watching Boom Cube clean house with Makoto. Pat’s Mak strings are pure, unadulterated acts of well-timed violence. No setting up into Ultras necessary, just links. That is exactly how you win at Tekken: well-timed knowledge of how moves combo and link into one another. How different is it compared to Street Fighter if that’s all you need to know? And there isn’t even meter to worry about for Tekken links!

lol tekken

lol buttz and hello Whirlwind

Rebel yell man!!! Unfortunately, I won’t be able to get any training going tommorrow due to prior obligations but please keep me posted on your availablity. As far as the Abel match-up goes, I just need to fight him more because Im still not completely familiar with all of his mix-ups after f.mk or a knockdown yet. Other than that, Id say Im pretty straight.

@Kodee - Thank you for that excellent post! I agree 100% with everything you said. Bout time it was said.

Also GGs to everyone last night at Hasting’s.

@Hiryu - Last night was the 1st time we gotten casuals in since like before October. Now that I think about it, I never get to play you or Sev in casuals. Guess that explains my success in the Abel matchup a lil. lol

@10x - GGs. Yeah, Im the smack talkin Cody player you hear poppin off every week. lol. We should play more soon.

@Cylus - Finally, I get some casuals in with you against that boxer. Last time we played casuals you were messin around with Rufus(yeah, it’s been that long). It was very fun playin you and I look forward to doing so in the future. GGs

@Squabb - Hit me up on PSN for matches, unless you’d rather roll through for games.

No worries. I may not have a ton of time in the coming weeks due to a business conf I have to attend the end of Jan. But after that I usually try to end work early on Friday for games so I will let you know. Also to if you want to bring a full set up to Hastings one week I will try to get there as close to 7 as possible and we can get in a 30 - 45 min session that way too.

Kodee: So after loosing a lot to Gene last night do you think it would be a viable strategy to try and learn/play Hwo myself to better learn how to play this match up? Or at my scrub level do you think that would create more problems since I still only have basic understandings of the chars I play Baek/Lei?

Honestly, the ONLY reason I dont bring a full setup every week is because of me having to go to work as soon as I leave Hasting’s and going to work with a full setup in your back seat for 5 or 6hrs is never good. I really hate that I haven’t been able to come kick it and shit though. Next time I get some vacation time I will take a couple Wednesdays off so I wont have to rush off after Fight Night.

I’d rather play in person to learn… Especially since you live right down the street, we might as well meet up to practice… Work schedule is Mon-Fri 8:30am - 5:30pm… Best days for me would be Tues, Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun… Mon’s are filled, same with Wed (Fight Night)… so just let me know your schedule and we can do this…

O let me borrow his PS3 TE (big thanks dude!) so I can actually play now… And if you need some help with the Abel matchup, I can show you quite a lot of things Cody can/can’t do against him… I’ve probably played that matchup more than ANY in the game simply because I use to play Sev every day at lunch when I had a working 360 stick…

Fighting against Abel tips:

  1. Run
  2. Normal grab rolls
  3. Block wheel kick high
  4. Block hits 2 and 3 of COD high unless he goes low, then either block low or mash out something armor breaking
  5. Run
  6. If he U2’s you, just ultra right back
  7. Pick Gief
  8. I suggest you start drinking, heavily. Listen to this man, he’s pre-med.

There you go. vs. Abel matchup training

I work Mon-Fri 10:50pm until whenever(normally til about 4am) so basically Im available all day unless something comes up. Feel free to hit me up whenever for games.

I got some tips against people that throw:

(true story)

Dude comes up to arcade in Charlotte, North Carolina in old SF2 World Warrior days. Says hello to the guy he is about to play. Puts 50 cents in the game, puts his enclosed pistol on the front of cabinet between player 1 and player 2 start buttons and politely asks, “Do you throw?”

lmao!!!

I’ve always wanted to know how throwing worked in SF2 before teching was invented, was it just unavoidable unless you reversal’d?

You just got thrown, plain and simple.

You either grabbed back or reversaled…no techs until Super Turbo…it wasn’t a big deal…you just grabbed back and that was it unless you had someone without a reversal then it was grab or nothing

What ultra are you doing in retaliation to Breathless? He beats Ultimate Buster for free. Even if Gief is right on top of him. Hell Abel has a setup on Gief in the corner.

I randomly want to play Cody and Ibuki. But my ps3 is STILL in Massachusetts. :<

Gief can just backdash it when it comes out

Backdash and mash Ultra 1, or do Ultra 2 and gtfo of there.

Poor Knoxville…no team…

The Hobbit is going to be coming out this year or next i can’t remember

Double post
