What exactly is the physical/clothing stereotype of a gamer? I have seen everything from FlyMike style, to some dude still stuck in the 80s big hair band days, to people that look like they haven’t bathed in a month. That is the interesting thing about tournaments you never know what the heck you are going to see. To answer your question though, no you would not look at FlyMike and say oh yeah he is a gamer. You wouldn’t think that about most of the gamers we know though.

I’m terrible at every game I play, live in Memphis, and am going to EVO to participate (and lose) in KoF. I’ve been to fight nights a couple of times as well.
Is anyone getting together any time between now and EVO for KoF? I’d like to get some practice in and meet some of the Memphis group (again?).

Im sort of in the midst of a quarter life crisis and I am trying to accomplish a few things before I turn 26 next June. So a co-worker of mine is trying to give me “the game” and the topic was girls. Most people know Im pretty dedicated to Fighting Games (though I’m not near as addicted as they think) and my co-worker was saying that my love for gaming shows through in the way I dress. If I were to have any success with women, I would have to improve my “swag” and rocking Captain America shirts isn’t going to net me any girls. Ok Co-Worker- 1.
But he then proceeds to say ALL gamers dress a certain way and no matter how much you try and hide it, it will show. I refuted this bizarre claim and when I was prompted to show him an example, I thought of you, the Flyest dude in our community. No way FlyMike looks like he games until 3am. Surely. I pulled up your facebook profile and he instantly said:
“Yep, homeboy be on them games tough! See, look how he wear that chain with the sweater vest!”
At this point I would usually just drop it and be like “ok yea my co-worker on that stuff, ignore and roll on”
But I asked the women on my job, whom all are fairly attractive, and they felt the same way about the gaming thing. I mean you should have seen the look on my managers face when I told her about MBB. She even called it foolishness!
“If you ever want to be with a woman Gabe, you are seriously going to have to drop that gaming stuff. It just causes problems in our eyes”
Really? Goodness. This goes a littler deeper though and I personally think its the mentality of the women here in Memphis and the perception on “nerd culture”, but thats another dissertation in itself.
So yea, lol, thats where that question stemmed from. I personally think you dress pretty Fly, boarderline hood, but its cool. You still a Fly slaw.

Those girls are full shit like 90% of guys are gamers in some way from madden or call of duty to street fighter. The genre doesn’t matter a gamer is a gamer I’d easily say the majority of males are gamers in some way.
Uh… yeah. My wife doesn’t play video games, has no interest in them, but doesn’t make stupid character judgments on something that damn near every man alive in the first world does. Don’t waste your time with shitty people. It’s not worth it. Anyone who has been there will say the same.
Also, the book The Game is about how womanizing and the tactics they were using to pick up women were ruining their chances of ever finding a meaningful relationship with someone, and how self defeating and ultimately sad the pursuit of picking up women by using manipulation is. But no one who reads it ever actually reads that part, so you get hilarious walking parodies of the message in the book touting it off like its the Bro Bible when the *entire point of the book *is to serve as a warning to not do those things.

What gets played at fight night really just depends on who brings what and what ppl are in the mood to play. However we do have some good KOF players here to be sure who go to fight night regularly. Sev, Kinetik, Justin, Josh, Maxninja etc are regulars and will play KOF with anyone.
Also, if you keep up with the thread when folks host gatherings oftentimes they will post up details here as to when and where. For gatherings again it just depends. If you have a setup for KOF then by all means bring it. To gatherings or Fight Night.
Anyway, next time you are at fight night look for the asian guy playing playing Virtua Fighter and say what’s up. It will be good to meet you if I haven’t already. If you got questions just ask.
@Gabe: The only thing I can say about the attire thing is, dress for the occasion. Simple as that. You don’t even have to over-do it and sometimes if you don’t feel like dressing for the occasion - fuck it, who cares what others think? The more comfortable you are - the more fun whatever it is you are doing will be because you won’t have that voice constantly bugging you; “what if this, what if that, etc etc”. NIKE THAT SHIT.
Gaming seems to get a bad rep for some reason. As for women who say guys playing games are stupid, look at what Josh said; it’s 100% correct. And I’m sure they (the women) play games on their phones as well (OHHHH but that doesn’t count to them, does it? Why not?) … All you really have to do is relate it to something they like to do for them to understand it (at least that’s what I’ve found works). And believe it or not, genuine women will actually like the fact that you have something you are passionate about (regardless of what it is) vs someone that just lies and makes up shit to “get the girl”, so to say. If she can’t accept things that you like to do - then why should YOU accept her? Simple answer, you shouldn’t, because in the long run it’s nothing but drama and bull shit about that said thing (whether it be gaming or whatever; same rules apply).

Because peeps will most likely have same opinion at end of day anyway that it’s a waste of time, if you’re “competitive” but not bringing home the money. They don’t know what it entails, and it’s just a game, why can’t you win, you suck and need to stop. But nothing wrong with gaming as long as you DO have your priorities in order.
That being said, you can’t realistically expect most females to be supercool with gaming, being that alot of dudes have like 3 kids, no job, and be on the 2K and CoD all day. But that’s a lot “cooler” and accepted than having no kids, a job, and being on Diablo 3 or MvC3 all day. Thing with girls is, whatever you do, you just gotta be able to give them adequate attention. You can’t think you’re gonna go x amount of places and travel for games, then take her out to eat once a month.
A lotta ignorant people when it comes to gamers even though I can understand most of the stereotypes. I’m not even “hardcore” at all, only playing VF and Tekken now, but I still have some of my other friends and cousins giving me a hard time. But I still remember when I held those U of M campus fight nights in Towers and my boys would try to clown me yet football team would come in and play, never knowing that I played games like that. They weren’t gonna take it super seriously or anything, but it’s refreshing to some guys who played fgs alone back in the day.
We live in an age where people are followers. You don’t gotta change shit about you if YOU don’t want. Yea certain rules apply when it comes to certain stuff and you don’t wanna make a habit out of trying to pull chicks with a CapAm tee, but do you. I make it hard for dudes to say too much to me about the bit of games I do play. Because I’m still the same guy, I got a job, I got a chick that alot of them tried to go behind my back and talk to for years on the slick, I’m still in the loop. Only thing peeps can get mad at is that I might spend more time online on the VF, than in a room full of niggas doing nothing but smoking and drinking for hours anymore.
And it’s not about clothes as much as you think. If you feel you dress as a gamer, still, please don’t let these peasants out here dressing like whatever fool starts the next stupid trend while tricking off on females and getting nothing in return, try to talk down on you. Because to a non-ignorant sensible chick, you who play vid games, have more personality and originality than all the rest of these Memphis clones. And that’s what they truly think if you talk to them. So yea if I did have B.O. and wear dirty clothes, I still would have dudes shook to say something. Because I got enough ammo to blast them and prob do some silly shit like watch a sailor moon hentai while playing Melty Blood on a 57" right in front of them. In peace. And dare them to go there lol.
As long as you got your priorities in order, you straight! Because chances are the next nigga trying to talk doesn’t. And for how dumb some of these fems out here been, I do gotta give them credit that some of them are waking up. But remember, you do gotta have balance. Might can’t be with a chick for a week then all of sudden in the middle of the night get up and start doing plink combos on a modded stick. Gradually ease yourself in. Gradually bring the CapAm tee back into regular rotation. AND, as long as it’s clean, SHE might start lounging around in it.

From a woman’s perspective I somewhat agree and somewhat disagree. Yes how you dress makes a big difference but that kind of depends on the girl. Some girls don’t mind Captain America tshirts and some want their guys in whatever the latest fashion is. Unfortunately impressions do count (in our society in general not just in relationships) and if you are constantly in tshirts and sweats then that probably will turn some girls off. This is in no way to insinuate that you do not do these things but overall girls care if you are clean, smell good, treat them good, have good communication, care about their feelings and respect them. I can tell you for a fact that those things are more important to women than your Captain America tshirt. Where the problem comes in though is getting past the initial first impression if they don’t care for the way you are dressed, etc for them to ever get to know what is on the inside. So my suggestion to you is maybe start slowly making changes. Instead of a tshirt wear a button up shirt or polo when you go out. Stuff like that.
As for gaming in general I do think you can find a balance between gaming and relationships. So for someone to tell you that you will never find a girl unless you give up gaming is bull. Look at Jason, Jeremy, Squabbler, FlyMike, Sev, and all of the other guys on here that have wives/girlfriends and balance it just fine. If that is your interest then a girlfriend would have to understand that and be okay with it. Besides would you really want to be with someone that doesn’t like you for who you are and what you are interested in anyway? If you have to change everything about yourself to be with someone then maybe they are not the right someone.
Okay enough of my rambling. I hope any of this even makes sense since I couldn’t sleep and have been up all night, so I sat and laughed at Josh. His stick tore up last night and he sat and played Bison on xbox live with one button on a stick that wasn’t even screwed together and was winning. It was pretty funny (but I think I see a nap in my future).
