Tekken for the Street Fighter Mind?

Since getting my playstation 3, i’ve noticed the lack of a worthwhile game deserving of my time. I’ve never been a 3d fighter guy, but dark resurrection shoud suffice until sf4 drops. I don’t get tekken’s mechanics at all - and since my hdtv lags with ps2, i’ve got nothing else to play on my 50 inch plasma.

Been playing kazuya, learned his combos, can get the ewgf going half the time… but he just seems to all around suck to play. Mobility is a major issue for me, moving forward backwards is cumbersome and slow and i usually get owned trying to get some space. Very frustrating. I know the command for quick back dash and wave dash… not helping.

I’m asking SRK instead of the zaibatsu fellas since street fighter heads can relate and point me in the right direction… explain basic strategy etc? Can’t zone worth crap, don’t even know if any effective zoning exists since I’m just constantly getting squashed. 5 wins to 100 losses almost. Mind you, I do okay in 2d.

Suggestions? A few kazuya block strings? thinking too street fighter for my own good.

I don’t think there’s “block strings” in Tekken because usually those strings are -frames on block.

Some other notes about Kazuya:
*If an opponent’s move is punishable - 1, 1, 2 will work.
*His crouch dash (f, n, d, df) mixups include EWGF, Hellsweeps, and WS4 (good if they keep crouching those EWGFs and hellsweeps).
*I think his 1,1,2 and Twin Pistons (WS+1, 2) are hit confirmable.
*Don’t always backroll when knocked down. It’s a terrible habit that I admit I have.
*df+4 is a really good mid

You do seem to have too much of a 2D fighter mentality for Tekken. I’m no expert player, but I will say that Tekken is a totally different beast. You defintely should check out zaibatsu and read up on your character. Also, watch lots of videos of good players using your character. Leedy is considered one of the best Kazuya players in the world so there’s a good place to start.

Just try to start with the basics. Learn how to read frame data and learn your character’s frames. Read up and study his oki options. Go to defensive training and practice throw breaking. Learn what moves track to what side and what moves are completely linear. Practice your execution. You want that EWGF to come out all the time, I assure you. Learn your match ups also. The rest will come with experience. This game will take a VERY long time to get the hang of if you want to play it seriously at all. Don’t expect results right away. That is a very big mistake that a lot of people make when appraoching fighting games in general.

Here’s a few things I do know about Kazuya.

  • Keep in mind that he’s one of the top 5 in the game. (3rd on the last tier list I remember reading) But this is under the assumption that your execution is flawless.

  • d/b4 give you huge advantage on hit. (+7 if I recall correctly) A d/f2 followup will interrupt any attack that the opponent might attempt. If you score a d/f2 CH you can get some pretty huge damage.

  • iWS1,2 is another option out of wave dash, but it takes a lot of practice to pull off correctly.

  • 1+2 is a pretty awesome high crush, but be mindful that it doesn’t have much range.

  • Don’t abuse EWGF too much since it’s a high and can be crushed. You still should is it often, just not TOO often.

Good luck!

to play mishima’s well (ie kazuya) you have to be able to wavedash in and out very well, practice your execution, getting EWGFS only half of the time is NOT good enough to win consistently with those guys, you have to be SPOT ON with execution (like with playing a shoto in SF)

practice yoru backdash cancels and your wavedashing, after you can move around as fast as required, the rest of the game is guess the mixups, break the throws, and okizeme (wakeup games)

after a knockdown you can either go for a ground attack, do nothing and wait to block a getup kick (not reccomended) or wait for a backroll or tech, if you nkow your characters oki options, you can deal much more damage and become an overall much bigger threat

I suppose I am lacking in the back dash department, and a bit with my wake up games. Most often, my opponent does the roll back or sit there for a second after i knock them down. Occasionally, they stand up immediately. All I can figure out to do with the waiting and the backroll, is oni stomp followed by spinning demons. Any other suggestions? How about what to do when they immediately stand? Bear with me please

Depends on how you knock them down, how they are laying down, how far they are from you, if a wall is nearby.

for backrolll catch kazuya i do b2,4,1, and then wavedash in to see what they’re doing

if they immediately stand, do hellsweep,2 and knock em back down on the floor, you have to intimidate them and scare them with your hellsweeps, once they are afraid and start blocking low, you do wavedash twin pistons and do yet another massive combo

i used to play tekken seriously and went to plenty of tournaments, i’ve played casuals with some of the best players in the world and went even if not beat them, i gottta say it’s a WHOLE different ballgame than street fighter, but that said, i gotta say SF is more fun

Can you explain how to properly wave dash into twin pistons? I can sort of get it by going into defensive crouch and then rising after a wave dash but it takes a while for the move to come out, especially when compared to some of the match vids i’ve seen.

during a wavedash, hit b+1,2

b+1 has to be at the EXACT same time, or else you’ll get another move
