Tekken 4/5 Advanced Basics: Where Do I Start?

Yes I went to Tekken Zaibatsu and I’ve learned the basic controls, movements, etc…

Though I’m not a Tekken fan I want to enter another comeptitive universe since I absolutely own the peeps I playin in my college rec room in every Capcom/Nintendo fighting game: CVS2, A3, SSBM, SSB64, MVC2 (I’m really just intermediate but w/e:razzy:) but since I don’t play Tekken 4 they started to move towards that game as a kind of “safehouse”. Luckily they are really scrubby at the game but not bad enough that someone who doesn’t know how to play efficiently can win.

Though I know the 1,2,3,4 button scheme I can’t understand/remember ALL the terminologies or glitches/strats. I’ve heard about wavedashing but I don’t know what it is or how to do it. I’m trying to learn at least 1 character in Teken 4 (Hwoarang) but since I have trouble understanding the movelist and how it correlates with combos etc… I’m really dazed.:looney:

Any help about the higher elements of the game are greatly appreciated.:karate:

P.S., The reason why I didn’t make a Tekken Zaibatsu account is because SRKer who play Tekken will probably have an easier time explaining thing to me than a TZ guy who rarely plays SF.:pleased:

Well, if you’re friends are scrubby, just use Paul and deathfist them a lot (qcf+2). That would be the easiest way, without having to learn much.

You have advantage: Deathfist (they will probably attack back and eat it on counter hit)

You are at disadvantage: backdash, let their move whiff…Deathfist

They will probably not know how to punish a Deathfist either. Other than that…poke with basic stuff like 1,2, d+1, ff+2:1 (the justframe, fast one). They will probably eat d+1+2 a lot too. If you think they’ll freeze up, do d+4:2:1+2 (looks like a sweep, elbow, palm; you’ve probably seen it before). You can also crouchdash into the d+4:2:1+2 with qcf. So you can mixup qcf+2 and qcf, d+4:2:1+2.

Your friends will hate you.

Thanx cygnus, but I also want to do “flashy” stuff to bewilder them.:badboy: Y’Know like those 4-8 string juggles I’m always seeing n those match vids. All I need to do is learn 1…

My friends know the moves and such, but the don’t know anything past ground strings and recognizing this magical thing call recovery time.

Hit me up on AIM and I will teach you everything, but it’s going to be from a TTT perspective since I hate 4/5.

kthx man. I’ll do it later.

Step 1: Learn some launcher attack.
Step 2: Execute launcher on someone
Step 3: Hit random jabs and stuff to juggle them.
Step 4: End with power move.

Like any fighting game, it’s best to start small. Pick a character and each time you play concentrate on getting down a handful of moves and using them well.

That Phoenix Smasher tactic is easy to work around, Cygnus… you learn a way out of that really quick.

Just watch some videos and see what people use… common poking strings, juggles, etc and use them. Learn what has frame advantage and what doesn’t, safe attacks and punishers. TZ forums are a big help too. Wavedashing is just dragon punch motion, more or less. Tekken isn’t too hard to learn for SF players. I picked it up decently, although I’m not too good.

Tekken 4 is completely different from Tekken 5.
Tekken 5 is seen as very similar to TTT though.

My advice is to cop off juggles from either TZ or match vids, and practice them to make sure you get the timing down… execution is probably the only thing you can learn from playing the CPU. I guess you could also practice throw breaking, since that is pretty important.

The only way to really learn is to play against good people and watch how they play, but ain’t that true of all fighting games?

I’d say scrap Hworang for now. He’s a good character but to play him right takes some serious know how. He’s one of those characters like Lei Wulong where you have totally get your stances (press both kicks) down properly to fake your opponents out. Atleast thats how the good players use him. For easy domination I would suggest Kazuya, Heihachi, Nina, or King.

I say Kazuya cuz’ if these guys suck you can probably WGF (f,df,triangle) them over and over with Kazuya which is easy to juggle off of. Not to mentions Kazuya’s quick bunch combo thing that stuns the opponent (b, x, square, circle, square I think) is a beast. A very easy an devestating combo with Kazuya is to crouch down, and while you are rising hit triangle to do a gut punch, if the oppenent is stuned you can instantly use the rapid punch combo listed above, then quickly WGF or simply axe kick (df, circle, circle) your opponent. That deals massive damage and was made impossible to do in Tekken 5 .

For Heihachi f,f, triangle which will launch the opponent into the air leaving them open for an easy Twin Piston (df, square, triangle) or a different combo is a good move. In Tekken 4 his d, square comes out so fast that you can cancel your oppenents attacks with it and sometimes you can keep them on the ground by spamming the attack over and over as they try to rise. He also has qcf, triangle like paul.

Nina IMO has always been one of the best characters in the game, she is just know being considered top tier in Tekken, I guessing some high level player picked her and won a tournament or something like that. She has a bunch of different ways to lauch people in the air, and the Blonde Bomb (f, f, square+triangle) hits hard and comes out fast, not to mention she can counter (b, triangle+circle), and kick people in the nuts (f,f, x).

King is a nice break from most Tekken characters cuz’ he doesn’t rely as heavily on juggles to win. In Tekken 5 he has been given all of Armor Kings good attacks making him a total beast. I don’t really play him (always played Armor King) but you might wanna look into him.

Also you can learn a few ten-strings with your favorite characters. They become pretty pointless cuz’ a good player will just poke you out of one but they might work for a little bit and you can always start one, then go into something else people you opponent tries to break it.

Eddy Gordo is the man!

He has one of the strangest techniqes which alot of people consider him to be very random. One minute he is laying on the ground the next your launched in the air getting destroyed. CHECK OUT THIS VID. http://www.gamedaily.com/gp/dlexe.asp?packageid=0079300558&gameid=&source=00001&sourcelist=

yeah, i’m trying to learn tekken as well(tekken 5). that text shit doesn’t do it for me though…i have to watch match vids to understand. i basically just look for how x person plays x character and try to learn from it.

guess when i get a lot better i’ll be able to understand shit.

Starting out, I’d say either Nina, Ling, Jin, Kazuya, Bryan or Paul. Nina has always been a good character to use, several power hits, speed and she has a decent poke game. Paul and Bryan are justs and can easily end a match if the opponent is not paying attention. I have yet to use Jin in T5, but if he’s like the TTT jin, he should still be a decent character. Kazuya, no need to explain, he’s the resident Namco kick ass character… though he should have been scraped, Can’t stand him.

My friend uses king, since T1, and he is a beast in the right hands. Though his buffer inputs are quite long. So if you want king, be ready to learn all of his inputs, and they are long…

Thanx for the help guys. I guess I’ll start out eith Ry… er Kazuya then.:razzy:

  • Nope. You’re forgetting AK’s Dark Upper. If King had that one move, he’d be a Diet-Mishima with throw options. :badboy:
  • Alas, Namco never wanted King to be top-tier…
  • I’d say he’s mid/top-mid for certain.
  • i don’t bother with 10-strings, btw. they’re gay.

If you are planning on playing T5, don’t use Kazuya just yet. The transition from a shoryuken to an EWGF is pretty smooth, but Kaz needs other things in order to win on a consistent basis.

I would go for Paul first. You basically just want to keep the pressure on with 1,2 and jabs and d/f+1 and his 1+2 break throws, with the deathfist as a whiff punisher. If they duck the jabs, d+1 or d/f+1 or deathfist or hop kick.
When they’re on the ground, ss+3 or d+1 if they try to move. f+1+2 is good too if they have their head facing you.
Paul doesn’t have much in the combo dept. You just want to launch, then jab them to the wall and finish with either a deathfist or, once you get better, a ff+2:1.

He gets boring after a while, but he’s the best to learn the basics and then you can move on to Kaz.

Tekken is a game about spacing properly and the high, low, mid, throw mixups. Defensively you want to learn when to interrupt or low parry and punish afterwords or at least gain the momentum in the match. T5 games are over in a short amount of time, so you need to be more conservative than usual and not get launched. Just apply your general fighting game knowledge and you’ll do fine.

That vid features Eddy getting SMOKED. Did you get mixed up on who you’re rooting for?

Hmm, if you had watched the whole video you would have seen the eddy player come out wth the victory in the end. And if I remember right, Slips got either 1st or 2nd place in that regional. Yup, he got smoked alright

OK I’ve been practicing him. But what does FF+2:1 and SS mean? I guess I haven’t mastered ALL of the terminolgy.:razzy: After reading his faq Paul looks pretty straightforward, as far as this game goes.

SS = Side Step
i wanted to make a thread like this, i use michelle and i started doing air juggles and i cant seem to time this combo

Starter 1,2,1 ff+1 d/f+4,2,b,f+1

the b,f+1 dosent hit someone help me out please?

Cool eddy/christie combo i know is f+1,3+4,1,4,3+4 (Tekken4)

BTW how is Tekken 5 different that T4? It was mentioned earlier to be more like Tekken Tag but I don’t know how TT plays anyways so I’m super-lost.:looney:
