Has anyone posted a timeline of when certain things system and character specific were developed? Like when did plinking become known, same for crouch tech, when did people figure out Fei was good and other undiscovered characters/techniques … etc.
Nope. It’s kind of a logistical nightmare trying to scroll through old posts, forum threads, video tutorials, tournament footage, interviews, etc etc, just to get a time line laid out.
Not to mention it depends on how far back you want to go, which specific games you want to examine, what your definition for crouch tech is, etc etc etc.
Your best bet is to do it yourself, by starting off with newer games, and cataloguing it as you go.
I saw that someone, in the tier post maybe, did a little bit of it a few months ago. It’d be an interesting project.
You’re right, there was a post in the tier thread. It was originally said by* HNIC Mike.*
I’ve copied and pasted it as follows:
lets see if i can get a timeline, the game has gone up and down on whats good/not good/too good
-mash dp kills all
-links are too hard. characters with easy links are better (ryu)
-discover chain lights are mash proof, people stop mashing as much
-invincible backdashes ruin oki
-throws become strong with reduced mashing
-plinking discovered
-crouch tech becomes well known, throws suck
-game is viewed as too defensive. crouch tech/mash dp/backdash 3 way defensive mix up
-rumors of akuma “vortex” from arturo’s trip to japan
-super sf4 released, japanese top player replays reveal more tech
-simple frame traps become prevalent, throws good
-chain OS kills backdash over use
-AE.
-YYF strength mixed with advances in offensive strategy make sf4 rushdown heavy
-AE2012
-frame traps are optimized
-crouch tech less effective
-hard and soft knock down set ups optimized
-throws are now deadly
-1 knockdown into death characters are strongest
-…?
Hope that helps.
Yeah thats the one. A good start, but could possibly be even further developed?
