Tech Talk Shmups (Shoot 'Em Ups) Appreciation Thread

Somehow it doesn’t work even with my 3rd gen iPod Touch.

I’m still waiting for someone with infinitely more building skills than I to come up with a modular stick case where I can easily swap out tops for different game types. Y’know: have a ‘Vewlix inspired’ top loaded with Sanwa parts for SF games, a Blast City top for shmups and old school beat-em-ups, and a top with a 4-way stick for Ms. Pac-Man.

Each top could have a handy quick-disconnect wiring harness, and a latch system to keep it locked in place.

I’d love to be able to quickly swap from an 8 button(dick) Sanwa layout to a 3 button(cooler) Seimitsu layout for shmups. Beats having to have 14 different arcade sticks laying around (sorta).

While I’m dreaming here, I’d also like a cookie.

I seen a number of modders done this. They keep the outer 4 screws for there stick, and the stick wiring detaches via a DB-15 connector.
Want to swap panels, it is as easy as undoing 4 screws, disconnecting a DB-15 and placing in the new panel.

You can have the same arcade controller support an 6 button layout, an 8 Button layout, Full Sanwa, Full Happs, Fanta stick and crown buttons, a MK layout, a stickless layout, dual-stick layout, Mahjong layout even a Pop’n Music Layout or what have you. Each panel could also have the joy stick most appropriate for you gaming needs on that panel. Example you could do a LS-33 with 3 buttons for Shmups or JLF and 6 for Fighters.

My favorite of all time growing up was Kaneco’s Aero Blasters on my TurboGrafx16 a flashback of stage 2 and the awesome music if you’ve never played: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynQQdJ0WxU4&feature=player_detailpage#t=255s

If it was me I would go with something more like IDE and have the option of doing a 2 player panel.

Oh man, I’ve jumped on this thread way too late. Haha.

I don’t play these games super hardcore, but I do love to play a good SHMUP whenever I get the chance. I will say upfront though that I’m really not a big fan of danmaku/bullet-hell/curtain fire SHMUPs, but that’s probably just bias on my part since I just plain suck at them. I should also mention that I really don’t understand the Touhou hype. I mean, the games are cool and all and the bullet patterns are interesting, but it seems like literally everyone and their mother has played these games.

As for games I do like, I guess I could call myself a Treasure fan. I’ve loved so many of their games and I’m of the opinion that Radiant Silvergun is possibly the most masterfully designed SHMUPs ever made. I don’t know if you guys in here would inlcude rail-shooters, but if so, I also would like to throw out there that Sin and Punishment was a godlike game.

Never played Touhou, but you gotta respect ZUN’s programming skills with those patterns.

But I like my bullets coating my screen. Touhou is overplayed though, but I actually played through a few of the games just for the music. I do have to say though, Touhou has nothing on DoDonPachi Black Label:

I bet you are already afraid to even think about playing this game.

Radiant silvergun is a great game though, I will admit to that.

Another game I personally recommend to you that isn’t insanely difficult, Raiden. It has always been a favorite of mine.

I’m starting to become more and more convinced that alcohol is some sort of magical drink. I seem to recall ZUN saying that he programs the games and writes the music while drinking and I don’t think I have to mention the utter miracles BlindWithOneArm does while inebriated.

Haha. I mean, it isn’t as if I am opposed to playing danmaku SHMUPs but a big issue is probably how hard it is to obtain them. I really actually want to play some of Cave’s stuff but can’t (mostly a cost thing really. I know ESP Galuda 2 (sp?) came out recently without region lock and so did Mushihime-sama). DoDonPachi is a series I did like though of the few games I’ve played. Gotta love those huge lasers.

I’ve been playing shooters since there were shooters, and my preferred method of control is touch-screen. Arguing otherwise is just holding onto nostalgia or adding an artificial layer of difficulty.

The ipod/ios… is perfect for shooters.

They’re literally the only thing I think the Wii-U will do awesome.

If someone could make a touchscreen controller to use on the 360 I’d kill for them.

I’d have to say no to that one, me and touch screen gaming do not agree with each other, too much ghosting inputs or them not recognizing properly. Casual gaming like cut the rope and angry birds work fine, but anything requiring precision just doesn’t work.

I would need a massive 50 inch or so touch screen to play any shmup effectively, I need the level of accuracy a small screen cannot provide on any game with more than a few bullets on the screen at a time.

I don’t know man, I can 1cc DDP, ESP2, and Deathsmiles on the ipod.

Are you sure that’s not operator error?

I think if you gave it more time you’d adjust.

I’ll give it another shot I guess, but I find it difficult playing on an iPod’s small screen when I carry around a cell phone with a 4.3" screen. Gotta wait for it to charge a bit though, guess my brother was using it. He is terrible with electronics though, the back is now coated in scratches while when I was the sole user the back was flawless. I should make him buy a case if he wants to use it.

Think I am going to have to put some Mother’s on the back of my ipod and see if it looks better.

Anyone knows if the US XBLA has Radiant silvergun yet?

Hell, if they release the game as Disk in the US or a region-less disk in Japan, I would get it

Only other alternative is getting a Sega Saturn that plays Japanese disks

I have the game emulated but it isn’t the same

I’m not sure, but I believe they also work on the iPad which would solve the size issue for you, but is an expensive solution…

Perhaps play a little on the ipod and imagine using a screen the size of an ipad to get an idea of the potential.

For Darksaul: Radiant isn’t out yet on xbla, but it’s definitely coming - probably in the next month or 2.

If I could get this going on my Thunderbolt it might be at a playable point for me. I don’t do well with small touch screens. I see potential, but I am person who likes to have a physical button. I actually rest my fingers on sanwa buttons but don’t set them off somehow(I really don’t know how it works, but it does somehow), and a touch screen can never emulate that for me. Touch screen for movement with buttons for shooting and you may have me sold on the concept though.

There’s always the Otomedius Gorgeous HyperStick…

…if you can find and afford one (sold for over $300 new).

That said, I’ll have to agree with everyone else and say that touchscreens just don’t feel intuitive for shmups. It seems fine at first, but they just don’t have the precision for times when you have to say, maneuver a 10x10 pixel hitbox into a similarly sized space in between bullets. Then there’s the fact that oftentimes, your finger covers up your ship too.

The game is not cool.
I ran over that Arcade Stick with my car.

Exactly why I don’t do well with touch screen shmups.

FYI, I would never buy that stick(even if it was $5), especially since artwork templates would be impossible to come by. I don’t see enough room for my left hand to rest either. What game actually utilized that screen and what was it for?

isit a late 2009/End 2009 model?

the region-free ones that i know of are:
Espgaluda 2
Mushimesama Futari 1.5
Deathsmiles (which was actually released in US, might be able to find a copy at gamestop)
Deathsmiles 2X (available on XBLA Games on Demand Section)
Pink Sweets/Muchi Muchi Pork

i had extra set of Espgaluda 2, Mushihimesama and Pink Sweets/Muchi Muchi Pork but i sold them

Are there any good shmups for the PSP?
