Teaching someone fighting games

So I’m teaching someone who’s sort of familiar with fighting games with this game. The person understands what links, cancels, anti-air spacing, combos, are but can’t seem to preform anything reliable outside of training mode. And trying to find a person their level online to play with is hell, because even though the room is “beginners only” some smug assholes with 50+% combos come in and body them while they can only do so much damage because they can’t seem to combo anything.

Whats a good way to train this person?
Whats a way to keep it fun? I tried to get them to learn a combo or two but it’s pretty boring for them to drill combos over and over.
Should I be using this game? or SSF4AE to teach?

Be very patient, and encouraging of their slow progress. Don’t just have them do combos, combos are boring. Maybe teach them one EXTREMELY basic combo, like j.HK cr.HK. Focus on the fundamentals of SF play. Teach them how important it is to block jump attacks, cross-ups, crouching attacks, etc etc. Focus on the fundamentals of SF, and work your way on up. Teach through play if you can, it’s much more fun and realistic for them to train in this way. Training mode is boring shit for anybody who is not a top player.

The best training is starting with the basics and using repetition until attacks and defense become second nature like walking. Fun? Well, you could give them a cookie every time they do something right, or maybe if they truly want to play this game you won’t have to think of ways to motivate them. A fighting game has a much higher learning curve than, let’s say a shooter. No way around it.

Attacks: Teach them simple and effective combos. It’s more important for the execution of the combo to be easy rather than to have the max dmg combo that requires harder execution. They should learn their bnb’s for each possible attack: A punish, a connected hit in a block string, and connected poke that was buffered into another poke ultimately leading to a launcher or ex move. Once these become second nature then they won’t screw up as much when it counts and they’ll probably feel proud of themselves.

Defense: Learn simplest one button defense anti-air normals first. Learn the spacing. Then learn special move anti-airs if you have them.

Have a few goes in arcade mode if your partner can’t yet handle the stress of online.

Synergy: Learn when the right times are to tag in and out, both for dmg and escaping. Very important.

We all started with J.HK to sweep. This might seem mundane, but landing this simple combo consistently in a fight taught me to be aware that I got a hit.
Then he can move to J.HK to normal cancelled to a special(like cr.mp to hadouken).
Then he can move to tick throwing

So just those 3 things he can learn, how to be aware that he got a hit, what moves can follow a jump in, and a simple mixup.

Those 3 simple things(IMO) will give a newbie the basic fundamentals of a STREET FIGHTER game.

Blocking and defense will just come with experience.
