I remember an episode of excellent adventures, Mike Ross was playing against a ken I think it was and his opponent taunted him right off in the 1st round. Gootecks was like, “woah, man”, but Mike Ross was Like, “no, that’s respect”.
So I never quite got that, and the other day I was up against a Sakura in ranked and she does the same thing, taunting me right off. I figured it was because of my pathetic pp, and this dude is like #2 ranked Sakura on pc. So I get all pissed off that thinking this dude’s gonna disrespect me, I’m gonna take a bit of his bar and taunt him back - cost me the round but worth it I suppose.
Match was so good that I wanted to message the guy after, gg’s so I actually friend request him, and he says his taunt was a sign of respect - brings me back to what Mike Ross was on about? - like all of Chun’s taunts are insulting, the yawn being least so… Maybe someone can explain how this works, taunting as a sign of respect?
huh, that supports it - not that I disbelieve. I couldn’t find mention of it anywhere searching.
I wonder if doing that might bring mixed reactions from people that don’t know. … or if I am the only one.
I may have to try it. I always respect everyone anyway. I only do well against higher level people it seems, so I need to be taunting everyone!
some taunts can show respect in the right context, but it’s usually pretty clear when it’s in disrespect which is why they dont really belong in the game in the first place.
Taunts are wack. They can make you laugh, they can make you cry, they can make you lash out in uncontrollable anger . . . my only question with this ‘respect’ thing is how is anyone supposed to know this? I wouldn’t. I’m not saying that an opening game taunt is gonna draw a serious reaction out of me, but an obvious sign of respect? I’m not intuitively making that leap. Not that it would matter, I’m still gonna play the damn game.
And what, truly, does ‘respect’ mean in Street Fighter 4?
I have found a few mentions of it now in some other forums and a comment someone made on youtube, people saying it’s like a bow kind of.
I was thinking it might indicate that you’re going to play a clean match, like no funny business, forget the dirty stuff, if both are willing to be vulnerable to bow first. I guess my jumping in lk legs was like, “**** that!”. oops
I actually found this thing that takes it a step further, something they do in smash bros at the temple stage mostly. It’s called a taunt party and you’re not even supposed to fight. The signal is to jump back and crouch twice, then start taunting.
With regards to the Mike Ross/Gootecks taunt, it could be that Mike took it as a sign of respect because it could be seen as a sign that your opponent knows you’re good, so taunts right off the bat to try and throw you off your game. So, in that sense you could read it as an affirmation of your ability. But then again, I’m just speculating.
I don’t know of any taunts that are respectful. Deejay’s point and laugh taunt (no. 8?) has got to be the worst/most disrespectful taunt in the game.
Taunts can send ambiguous messages. some can be respect, some can disrespect. In online game play I know when some one afk and returns they taunt to signal to resume or pause a match.
Personally I like when game make tunat an intricate part of the system. Game like Matri melle and Ring of destruction make taunt a viable tool.
I like how Guilty Gear does it and makes them pretty clear.
I’ve played this one guy in 3s who taunts a lot mainly because of the benefits you get from it, but it was took a bit to wrap my head around the fact that he wasn’t doing it to be a dick.
It depends on the taunt. Some have respectful/fun ones.
Ryu - "You can do better than that!"
Dudley - "I’m impressed!"
Hakan - “Ok! Are you ready!?”
Others are very blatantly rude.
Cammy - "I knew you were weak."
Zangief - "Weak like kitten…"
Ken - “Yawwwn…”
I dont taunt. It’s disrespectful, especially when the person doing it has a life lead. Taunting to show respect is not something I’ve recognized as being commonplace.
