Andys rundown is pretty much my problem right now, since my focal point is my defense/ react and counter. Almost everyone is heavy mix up/combo oriented, so its hard to keep up with no examples to follow.
Matt: was in class. Give me a call back.

843,000 with doom for 1 meter?
its more likely than you think!
@Ron: hey what are some of zero’s most damaging combos, i can’t seem to pull out more than 700k and thats with assists. Granted it is only for one meter, but i was wondering if you knew any better ones?
Omg, it just hit me, run haggar. There’s your react/counter.
Just called you chris ill hit you back up at 1pm.
At the hospital no games this afternoon for me
That’s… right when I get back in class, haha. Just got out for the day. Gonna be home probably around hmm… 4:30ish.
Anyways, parts order is going in by 3, so if anyone has anything they need, speak up.
And eh, mashing on assist to every situation that I don’t want to deal with teaches me nothing except … how to mash on an assist. Which hell, might be just what I need considering I rarely use them.
Does the DHC glitch work with Dorm’s Stalker Flare? If so, I may have a new team.
I realize everyone is having fun with the game all that good stuff, but why doesnt anyone like to just stick with a team regardless to see its full potential? Out side of the first week some people had some decent teams they couldve worked with but they switched. I feel that might put you behind in the long run because youll need to redo your match experience with those teams etc. I mean this isnt my favorite game by far and folks might just be switching things up because it bring out the fun in trying something new etc. I dont know i just like the whole mentality of just strolling through the cast or something the first week or 2 then nailing a team/ character and sticking with it.
I would like to know everyones thoughts about this. Not about my opinion but why you guys switch teams up so much. It almost feels like you guys might be looking for a easy solution to produce quick results. /shrug.
How would you know what your team’s full potential is without understanding what other team’s options/synchronicity are? That’s simply operating on a limited base.
How would you know your own potential without playing other teams/characters? Playstyles can/do shift, and a team/character may fit a playstyle more adequately than one that you commit to.
What better way would there be to learn how to combat a specific character or team by using that team? Unless you are playing top level play, the answer is that there simply isn’t, and even if you were, that’s only one interpretation of how a team/character can be played.
EDIT: Team/character specialization produces linear thinking, and linear thinking produces losing results. You get complacent for what “seems” to work, potentially omit strategies/manuevers that may very well work, and may be potentially inhibit your inginuity. Being able to shift between different modes of play is important as well, and having a working base of what a character/team can do, and what the player using said team/character has to do can only elevate one’s understanding and application of the metagame. This is what I’ve come to terms with, which is why I almost refuse to use Rog anymore unless its by request, or best suited to combat the playstyle of my opponent.
EDIT2: Mike, because of ambiguity (not your fault), I’m omitting your buttons from my order: If you’re looking for clear buttons, go HERE. They have a package deal for 8 clear Semitsu buttons for $30 shipped. I have some at my house if you want to see how they feel. If you’re looking for clear Sanwa’s, then you’ve got a bit of leg work to do. Adam can tell you more about that. If the 4 Sanwa buttons were all that you needed, then oops - shipping solo isn’t that much and both Matt and Drew are most probably in the hunt for parts, and I can always use the excuse to order more junk. Your bat top and adapter are in my order.
1)pmode, extensive pmode. hell 2p pmode like what jay was doing week one can iron ALOT of shit out. If the point of the session isnt just to do combos but to learn and research.
i was saying the first week or 2 but it might take others/newer players longer to do the same. Understandable.
Agreed, but you can get this experience from tournaments esp OOS where players playstyles are different. Because even if you played someone elses team it would produce the same one interpretation of how that team can be played.
I would agree if the person playing wasnt learning from there matches or rather didnt really know how to analyze a matchup in its entirety. I have done this and the results i get are definitely not losing results even in the long run. If i dont understand another persons character i put it into pmode and come up with what i can with a very open mind. I dont necessarily know if im explaining what i do correctly but if i feel like i get results from my overall training regiment.
Drew, you don’t really get much more than 700k. Zero doesn’t kill in one hit like much of the cast, that’s just how he is.
Chris, that line of thinking is completely off base in my opinion. You don’t learn how to counter something just by using it. Like you said, “that’s only one interpretation of how a team/character can be played,” just because something works against you using a character doesn’t mean it’s going to work if you use it against that character (especially true because your version of that character isn’t going to be as good as a specialist’s). By sticking to one team/character exclusively you get a better feel for what you can do in more situations, and just become better overall. Not only that, when you spread yourself thin it’s easy to forget basic things, or try to apply things from other characters to whoever you’re using at the moment that simply won’t work. Thanks to this wonderful thing we have called the Internet, if something gives you trouble instead of (poorly) trying to figure out what to do from that character’s point of view, you can just ask a group of people that might have the same problem as you.
I’m going to use myself as an example. I play many characters in SFIV, and because of that my ‘main’ (Cammy) has suffered greatly over time. I forget simple things like the optimum combo after a focus crumple. Look at yourself even, you have been branching out recently and your performance at the last two tournaments has been less than stellar. I haven’t played you much recently so I’m not going to claim that’s the sole reason why, but I guarantee it’s definitely contributed.
Now I will say a team game like Marvel gives a lot more room for adjustment than a 1on1 fighter, because you can keep your core the same and just change a character at a time until you find something comfortable…but you’ll constantly keep yourself behind doing that.
completely agree Ron. Thanks for explaining it better than i did.
@ Chris : This is what i’ll need. I got cash for you next time we meet up.
Happ Competition Pushbutton, White one of these buttons is all i need for now. Thanks man
I’m just hunting for two things: a team that meshes well with my playstyle, and a second team that is totally opposite. For the first team, I’ve been just rotating different characters into my Spencer/Haggar/xx team until I found a group that works well together and for me (Wesker, mostly). Now I’m trying to put together a second team to see if I enjoy playing a completely different style (Thinking Deadpool/Dorm/xx, probably Haggar or Arthur).
I play different characters to make sure I’m not missing out on a character that I didn’t know I’d enjoy. That’s about it. It takes me a good while to settle on a character or team, and it’s often one of the first characters I start playing that I come back to (see: Ryu, Makoto, Spencer, Haggar).
I’m still getting used to the whole team concept and the impact one character makes on it’s dynamic. Here’s several characters I find interesting and want to experiment with, but I haven’t taken the time to. Playing new teams let me do it three characters at a time. I don’t plan to run these teams except maybe in casuals to prevent inadvertantly showing off any non-well known tech that we may have discovered and didn’t want to share with the community until streamed matches.
But, Ron’s right. So I’m going to put Aluminum on the side and concentrate on my core team, and bring back Dante. Tron just doesn’t play like I want her to as an anchor.
Ron: mayhaps, but how long does that really take to get back? All of what you mentioned can easily be ironed out again after playing for a week? If Rog was hard, then yeah, I would wholeheartedly agree, but its pretty much agreed upon that he’s not. If SSF4 was new and there were new tactics being developed everyday, then yes, I would definitely agree, but it isn’t. Playing with an expanded cast is giving me a much better feel for how to control what’s happening at a fundamental level because of that, and giving me a base understanding of what tools a player would use with a character to control the match in the way that they saw fit, as well as a better understand and appreciation for whatever they concoct that was different than myself.
Speaking for myself personally, I can go and read all that I can about every character, but without having used it myself, then that knowledge means absolutely nothing to me. I am better able to comprehend what is happening after that experience, and am able to apply counters to it based on experience.
Example: I COMPLETELY devalued the use of Rogster jabs, both as pressure and defensive tools, even with everyone and everything I’ve read telling me to utilize it more. I now have a far better understanding of how powerful it is because of my experiences with other characters. Another example would be his short, which I had, at one point, completely omitted until I saw, by using other characters, how effectively lows can open up the opponent’s defense and establish a high/low game.
Keep in mind, my response was how it applies for me. I should have put in more “I’s” in that. I learn differently than most. I can’t bring myself to use something that I don’t fully understand. Also, keep in mind that I’m still very new, and so where specialization would be perfectly fine for more seasoned players, I personally don’t think its the best route for newer players.
I think what should also be considered is that this is a TEAM game. You can specialize in a team, but you have to also consider your own playstyle, team dynamics, etc. I love to rushdown, but I know I’m most effective when I turtle/zone. However, all the teams I play atm (with the exception of sent/dormy) are pretty much all rushdown. Having access to the internet and all this information means nothing if you can’t get the character into your own hands, as there is a difference between theory and application. I’d rather take the time to find a team that I’m most effective with and beast while having fun at the same time instead of forcing myself to specialize in a team that I might end up hating. In addition, it’s not like this game allows you to just put any 3 characters together and go to town. My recent skirmishes with Thor this past Tuesday proved that.
Also, let’s not act like the internet is the best source of accurate information. Stupid ppl post up crazy shit on these forums quite often.
Edit: Chris just said a bunch of the above while I was typing lol
My team will be complete when X drops…
until then, Im sticking with Zero, Doom, Taskmaster. The team is solid and is a Damage Machine and Im having fun with it.
What you say is the truth, however you didn’t prove anything last Tuesday. You were playing a good team, you were just playing it in the wrong order and with LOTS of dropped Magneto combos. That team can succeed on the strength of Mag/Wesker alone, having Thor is just a bonus (he definitely shouldn’t be anchor)!
Will it, Drew? He may lead to be counterprodective should he eventually make it.
