See you can say that, but the fact remains that there are just some characters in this game who are just plain better than others. The margin might be a lot smaller by comparison to earlier games, but it’s still there, and it’s always going to be.
You’ll have a hard time convincing me that any Thor team would be able to compete with Mag/Task/Phoenix/zone oriented teams without the latter team messing up BAD.
And this is very true. To be very honest, a game without tiers would honest be very bland, because that would mean that virtually every character played the same. Everyone would have the same tools as everyone else. A fighting game cannot exist without tiers.
SO in any case, i guess i agree with you saying that the gap between teirs is much smaller than before which is why everyone seems so viable. Thor though…

Some characters need more team synergy than others, you can slap Sentinel on a team and he’ll perform well. While others need some help getting in keeping away.
Of course tiers exist and matter, that is true and always will be true of any game. I’ll tell you this, though…Magneto CANNOT effectively zone Thor. He will get eaten alive if he tries. All he has to do is have one disruptor whiff and he’s going to die, almost guaranteed. Thor is much quicker than I gave him credit for. I would definitely never put him above mid tier, if even in that, but he hurts so bad, he’s so deceptively fast, and he has so much health. His only real weaknesses are that he has no range, and everything is punishable on block (which is mitigated by assists).
All I’m saying is this about Thor. I’m not the best in the world, but I think I’m at least decent at this game. And Ron was able to go about 50/50 with his thor/wesker/haggar or thor/wesker/tron teams against both my mag/wolv/sent and my mag(wolv)/sent/pheonix squads. I mean I messed around and threw akuma on the squad a few matches, but at the end of close to 100 matches, it was about 50/50 and I think he was running thor the whole time.
So if thats not enough to convince you that he can work Adonis, either you must think I’m really bad, or Ron is godlike. I don’t particularly believe either of those conclusions, personally!
edit: and looks like Ron beat me to it while typing this post but thanks for the reminder, he ABSOLUTELY can punish magneto with death for throwing out a disruptor to zone anything more than full screen distance most of the time. You can’t really just disruptor zone him like you might think. I had to eventually learn that if he was not absolutely full screen away, I needed to abandon the “disruptor to keep him out” strategy. (and with haggar/tron assist, me rushing in on him nonstop is not very smart either)

I was running Thor/Wesker/Haggar a while back with fantastic results. Thor eats up fireball/beam zone from mid-screen with Mighty Strike and has a decent rushdown with tri-jump :l:. He’s got a ton of shenanigans, though, like whiffing a diagonal mighty strike to land behind someone for a throw super. Man, I kind of want to pick that team up again.
Also, there are very clearly tiers, and Wesker/Mags are very very close to the top.

I might consider it at a later point in time i dont know. its either that or picking up a new headset/mixamp. That new astro7.1 mixamp with the ability to work with pc, consoles, ipods, with the ability to output Digital audio as well etc is looks very fucking good atm.

So, Ron runs Thor/Haggar (one of the best assists in the game, with random throw traps) and Thor/Tron (another one of the best assists in the game, and is virtually unpunishable 95% of the time) and you’re all like “OMG HE’S SO NOT SUCKY”.
You do realize the fallacy in that right? Not all assists are haggar and tron, and Logan I’m sure you lost b/c you were running into them more often than trying to zone with Mag disruptor.
How many times did you actually lose to Thor? How many times did he beat you with Thor alone? Was Thor putting out most of the damage?
Thor has tools, and I’m not disputing that. Thor isn’t bad. I’m saying, he doesn’t have the tools that the other 90% of the cast has. His tri jump is the shit in terms of movement, but who’s tri jump isn’t?
If Ron can make a team like Thor/Iron Man/Super Skrull work, THEN I’ll be listening.
I actually don’t think I was losing by running into tron/haggar the majority of the time that I lost. In fact, I might be remembering wrong maybe Ron can back me up here, but I actually DID lose my magneto the MAJORITY of the time, because I was trying to zone with disruptor and getting killed. So much so that I specifically pointed out, by talking to myself out loud, several times during the session, “I’m not allowed to do that move from that range” “That is definitely a death from a punished disruptor, yeah I deserve that” etc.
Although obviously if he didn’t have those assists, i’m sure there are flaws in the character I could exploit more once they were gone. But this is a team game, and the point of picking your team/assists is to cover the flaws in your point character. I mean, Sentinel in mvc2 is an amazing character, but you see him backing himself up with cyclops or commando the majority of the time don’t you? You see magneto backing himself up with sentinel assist or psylocke or something right? Even in this game, characters like magneto or wolvering or any other rushdown character, without the right assist (sent drones) to get them that avenue of rushdown, aren’t as scary.
I’m drawing this out, but the point I’m trying to make, is even if a character is only good when he is paired with a certain assist, that doesn’t mean he isn’t good. And i’m not even saying that Thor isn’t good without an assist, because I think hes still decent. I’m not saying he is top tier or anything though so don’t take it the wrong way.
Does anyone else feel that tiers are largely decided on the team and team synergy of the three characters you pick? Of course, when it comes down to the last two characters there’s going to be a “better” character, but to get there you have to fight your team vs. theirs.
thats not a fair assessment of the character adonis. this is what we talked about too its not a one on one game its about team synergy. It also the reason why i said that character tiers are not as important its about team synergy. You are right that haggar and tron help fill a lot of characters weakness. but Even if they filled in for thors weakness he made it work.
I was saying thor doesnt suck not cause of what ron did but because i dont think anyone does with the right team. Sure some characters need a little help from a team and some need a lot but that doesnt matter, since in the end its a team game. One on one matches only matter at one point in the match when your only left with one character. And thats more of a matter of who is a good archor character. like mag is good imo but i like some others more as the last man standing.
I think Jarv’s post is evolving my point. I guess Thor just has less team synergy than a lot of other characters; he would take away from a team more than he adds.

Yo ive done extensive tests with the Death adder mouse and starcraft 2 and its not a bad mouse but it doesnt give me the amount of surface area over the y-axis for real quick accurate swipes. Lamens i get full big swipes but the end up being more so rectangles than good squares than like my Logitech MX-518 does. So im gonna stick with my older mouse till i find something better.
This Razer Death adder is the one with the 3.5G infrared sensor It is a optical mouse not a lazer mouse. Still in great condition no scratches, LEDs work and everything willing to let it go for about 30$ retails for 45+$.
Jay and Logan have it spot on. You can not determine a character’s worth by how they fair alone. You have to consider the team as a whole…because you’ll be using it the way you set it up the majority of the time. I run Thor on point because he desperately needs assists, that’s just how he is and he’s absolutely a weaker character without them. So is Zero, so is She-Hulk, so are many other characters. That doesn’t matter though, because you get to choose your team and it’s likely going to stay that way for most of your matches. Honestly, I feel I’d do better overall with a character I know how to play like Mag or Zero in place of Tron/Haggar, but I wanted to make Thor work so I built around him and what I felt would make him alone most effective. Wesker allows for a lot more damage when you get hits, Tron/Haggar allow for easymode pressure escape so I have more chances to work with Thor. After my past few days of playing him I actually feel that Wesker is more important to Thor than Tron/Haggar. I could throw some good beams or some drones in place of them and still be pretty well off, though I’d have to block more, but Wesker’s added damage off the OTG and smooth DHCs can’t be replicated by many.
