Tallahassee Thread: 3 times the Marvel, 3 times the Capcom, 3 times the butt kickings

You can sugarcoat it all you want, and twist the perception even though you weren’t there. Thats fine. He received his apology and the edit was in response to Jays post.(Although i have had a long standing habit of editing my post for a couple minutes after i post) Im done with it. I used to try and care about what you guys thought about me, but in retrospect it hasnt changed anything. I am who i am, and i am proud of it like it love it or hate it. I am content with it.

Basic Marvel questions:

What kind of positioning should I be striving for? I notice that typically, everyone is always in the air. Is there a reason for this?

How exactly do you zone effectively in the Marvel engine?

How does anti-airing work? Is it even important or feasible?

What steps can I take to control the pace of the match?

How do you develop team synergy? What do you look for?

No hating, that’s the magic of forums. I know that shit hits me in real life, too. I say something and be done, then I’m like “DAMN, you know, I should have said this instead, would have been way funnier”.

When you’re on the ground, you’ve got four directions you need to block from (left/right crossups, overheads, lows). In the air, it’s just two. Also, a lot of characters have GREAT movement options in the air.

Projectiles, air dash normals, things like that. Some characters have huge, amazing pokes, though (Sent, Haggar pipe, Dante stand A, Storm crouch C/launcher)

Depends on your character. She-Hulk has a godlike anti-air super. Otherwise…well, most air approaches are done with either an air dash covered by an assist or from a super jump, both of which you’re better off avoiding or blocking.

RTSD (rush that shit down). Barring that, forcing someone to play on your terms, either by good zoning or having them respect your assist (Hsien-ko armor is a great example). There are plenty of ways, but these are the most common.

For me? Assist covering spots that the point character has trouble with, DHC compatibility, and tight colors.

I’m sure someone else can really fill in these answers, though.

Some of that can be explained in the marvel step your game up video with clockwork. For the rest im sure someone will respond. I wouldve but i have to work here shortly.

story of my life…

Mike’s answers are all really good, but I’m going to expand on these.

Anti-airs are definitely feasible, you just have to know what yours are, what kind of position you’re in (is an assist going to hit you if you anti-air?), and your timing has to be a LOT better than other games. A good rule is that you will almost never anti-air with a special move. In general S attacks have pretty big hitboxes and function well as anti-airs. In most situations though, just push block. Push block is amazing, and honestly you shouldn’t have to take but 3-5 seconds of rushdown max before you should be able to have no assist on you, and pushblock your opponent back to neutral (whether they’re coming from the air or otherwise).

Team synergy is tough…this early in the game there isn’t a well developed metagame. I can tell you the number 1 thing you should look for right now is good DHCs. Red life is so important you MUST be able to get your characters in and out without having to rely on a raw tag. If you intend to run Akuma/Ryu/Chun still Chun should unquestionably be your anchor. Akuma/Ryu can DHC back and forth all day in combos or just randomly, and that is an extremely valuable thing to have. Properly managed red life can equal you having a 4th or 5th characters’ worth of health just from that healing.

Behind good DHCs you need to have good assists. Pretty much every character has at least 1 USABLE assist, though some are very clearly better than others. The most important assist types are long horizontal and lockdown, which Akuma and Chun both have excellent ones for respectively. HOWEVER, just having a good assist doesn’t mean shit if you don’t know how to use them. This is going to be the toughest thing to learn and it’s going to vary greatly depending on the combinations you play. I…wouldn’t really be able to teach or advise this without playing your team. I don’t know if Ryu’s tatsu assist is comparable to Akuma’s, but I think I’d run Ryu fireball, Akuma tatsu, and Chun legs.

Look, NOBODY calls me a delicious cookie and gets away with it.

The main problem here is you don’t know me that well, if Mike G, Jarv, Chris A, or Drew talked shit I’d be cool, but you aren’t my friend. Same as the other way around, I’ll talk shit with my friends all the time, but I can’t just walk up to Ron and tell him how free he is (I did that once and I aplogize). The hand flares? I have a cause band that says “Harden the fuck up”, and it’s getting loose. It irritates me when it creeps up on my upper wrist so I shake my hand when I get a super off, that’s it really.

It’s okay, Ron actually WILL be free in a few months!

It’s soooo true. Only to good players, though. So people like Mike G and James will always lose to me.

I already asked Mike about this, but who do you guys think would work well with Deadpool and Sentinel?

I like Wolverine, but he’s way too hard to control for me because of his speed…I like Storms low assists, but thats about it…

Mike suggested Doom (Which I will try out tonight)… I like Akuma, but being new to this he dies incredibly fast for me…

Any thoughts?

@Chris: I’m really interested to see an ipod stick… Are you going to run it through the pre-existing headphone jack on the front? That would be sick…

so what are you guys playing on tonight? ps3 or 360?

Just in case anyone hasn’t, you really should all read this on the front page
Shoryuken - The Only Problem With MVC3… is You.

I think a lot of what it says concerns every game really and puts into words what I think sometimes when I hear some of you guys (not gonna mention names) complain about “random” crap beating you or the game being stupid because of some reason or whatever it may be.

Oh and G-MIke i’m sure there will be at least 1 setup of each system. ANdys ps3 and my xbox, unless someone else brings an xbox so i don’t have to use mine :woot:

You and I will answer these tonight.

FTW: Save your energy, just put him on ignore.

Ron: Come get posterized son!

Eva: Start DP put Sent last and try Doom in the middle, I played around with this setup its not bad. Also try Dante/DP/Sent, a very very effective team and Dante is fairly easy to pick up.

GMoney: I have PS3 and Logan has it for XBox so, either one.

General: Someone bring another setup/copy of the game.

Hey I can bring a 360 setup tonight. Can’t wait to get in some good matches. Hoping Crespo or Ed will make it out to I can bum some good She-Hulk strats.

Ok what position should u be in?

Well the general answer is on top of someone, especially if they are in the air you want to be in the air but higher than them. Being in the air allows u to avoid most ground mix ups and if you are above someone you can punish/ out prioritize them for pressing buttons. There are exception to this of course. Also on last thing on this when in the air with a good anti air assist its very hard for people to restrict your movements.

How to zone?

This is a very general answer because a lot of people can do it differently, but basically you want to restrict there movement as much as possible. Like a projectile character can use there projectiles and assist to keep u from getting to where u want to be, while a sent will only need to into position to use his high priority pokes which would also stop u from pressing your attack. Point being you have to find out how to keep people from comfortalby doing what they want.

Anti airing?

anti airing does work but way different from sf4. Someone people have good aa options by themselves some people dont simple as that. Also for those who do it depends on what and how someone if trying to get in on u. The best option is usually jumping and advance guarding their attack to push them out and reestablish positioning. In general u want to have an effect aa asist and use it when u notice people approaching u from the air. But there is a lot more to this like if there using an assist to help them get in an what assist they are using. Protecting from this also goes hand in hand with zoning keeping people from getting to where they want to be or doing what they want to do. So u do have to guess or predict as much. Learning the characters is the best way to truly understand this part of the game.

What steps can i take?

first understand what u want to do with your team. If you dont know what u want to do it hard to come up with a gameplan. Know if you are trying to rushdown or zone or build meter or whatever. Once u know what u want to to then u can go from there, andy said he will talk to u later a one on one session with him should really clear this up for u as long as he doesnt get all adonis and logany and treat u as his whipping boy.

Team synergy?

Well in this game u need a way to get in, a way to get out, and damage. That is very simplistic answer but it fits. So when building a team look at characters dhc’s and assist to determine if they will allow u to do those thing ons a team. However this is marvel and not all teams need to be balanced. You could go for total rush down or defense/keep away. However non balanced teams will get beasted on by teams with a counter make up. Like if you have a total mix up team but no way to get in a zoning team will usually easily handled them. this is also something u need one on one assistance with to go over character attributes.

hope this helps. but much of it is generalizations.

Hey guys, I’m finally back from Orlando… my weekend’s search for a SSF4AE machine was wasted. They need to tighten their game! I thought Orlando had everything.

Anyways I was considering coming out to play tonight, if I’m invited… I have a PS3 setup (would I need to bring tv also?) And I’d love to finally get some local learning in on MvC3 and SSF4. And MK… haha just kidding. Shoot me a text, 850-363-1716.

Thanks for all of the information so far. I’ve got another barrage of questions but I’m going to hold off on that just to see if any of my research and reading answer all of that.

Subject change: if anyone needs any wire or zip ties, I just got in 400 ft of wire (of varying colors) and 1000 zip ties, so just slide me a dollar or 2 and you can get whatever you need. The only reason for the contribution is to help replenish the stash.

Oh man I could definitely use some zip ties. If we ever meet up I will hit you up with a couple bucks fo sho.

ILl be by tonight sometime after 10, defenitely looking for some good matches to night, i need soemone to teach me how to get good at the game

Where is the Mahvel happening tonight?
