Talking Points: Discussion in the Fighting Game Community

I’ve suffered this crap on SRK many times more than anyone else in this discussion, so let me put this to you;

it’s not going to change.

No plea and no amount of argument will make it change

Accept it or go somewhere else.

You do say some dumb motherfucking shit some times. I’m not trying to defend the people hurling insults at you. It may just be prudent for you to look at your posts in a more discriminating eye and try to figure why they are calling you these things. People probably think I am a pretty huge dick on SRK. The difference is that I am fully aware of why they make think that so I don’t catch feelings over it.

I had some stuff half written about how to post on SRK. I may just finish it for the shits and the giggles. Most people don’t know how to use SRK properly; this leads to more problems than anything else.

Off course, some people love the negative attention.

lol, irony explosion ><

The thing is, beyond the whole ‘thats how arguing on the internet works’ (hint: that’s how argument on the internet works), the only way this will ever change is pressure from above.

Just like how the attitudes to new players only changed when the site owners said ‘seriously cut that shit out RIGHT NOW’!

I would love to have WNFs to even go to but geographic circumstances dictate otherwise. With that being said, my view on the “community” is obviously slanted by what I see here on SRK, but something I would like to see discussed (if not here, then in a more aptly titled thread) are some of the questions below.

Is lumping this cacophony of games together and terming it a singular community logical? For example, I typically hear of a Counter-Strike community, or a Quake community, but not so much a “PC Shooter Community” with the term being used so ambiguously like “FGC”, let alone seeing expectations imposed upon said community like you would typically see levied against the “FGC” here on SRK.

Is the “FGC” a community with standards dictated largely by major tournaments and streams? From my understanding, that is the case. Perhaps that community could be labeled more appropriately.

My personal opinion (and feel free, as you already do, to dispute) is that the term FGC gets tossed around far too loosely and most that delight in it’s excessive use have strong opinions on what should and shouldn’t be acceptable. Whether you are right or wrong, when I see a phrase like “The FGC as a whole should…” it is usually a signal for me to facepalm and move on.

Also, I sense a bit of a disdain from forum members, older, wiser members, toward the effect of the culture on other games in the genre. I agree with quite a few of the previous posters who brought up the relationship between the attitude of the “community” and the short life, or postulated short life, of remakes. I understand that many remakes are uniquely flawed and die hards will remain so inclined to point that out to us, however, it is a shame to see opportunities to breathe life into these time tested, generally accepted good games are being shunted by the belief, by so many, that a game isn’t worth playing if its not a headliner. Personally speaking as long as I can find a game somewhere and I * love* the game, I will play and support it.

To wrap it up, I know my insight is limited due to my limited interactions with other players outside of these forums so if this has already been discussed please point me in the right direction. Otherwise I would love to hear more thoughts on this.

Its been touched a couple of times. Ultradavid wrote an article about the eSports deal which touched on the subject and so have I. I’ll PM you the link to both.

Nah thanks, I’m a newcomer but I’m glad I’m not the only one wondering about this.

Does supporting a game mean something different for the FGC. Whenever a next version of something comes out there is always a riot. Compared to other genres which are more than happy to get new content it seems the fighting gamers never want anything new after the initial release.

cult of the OG.

Honestly, I think it’s the same thing most of the time, people desperately want ‘props’. There’s a definite idea that hating on new games is a way to get that sweet sweet OG respect honey.

I am all ears for an explanation on this.

essentially, people want props and to be respected, and really don’t want to be considered scrubs or noobs.

There are some very senior members of the community, especially the forum community, that set a pattern of showing how ‘oldschool’ they are by consistently hating on things, resisting change, and carrying on about how awesome it was in the old days.

The idea I’m proposing is that a lot of people are imitating that attitude, just like how some people try to imitate Yipe’s style… they want to have deference that the established forum personalities get.

Alternatively they just fall in line because, to tie in to the general push of the thread, the forum community is exceptionally hostile/dismissive to people that buck the culture.

And note, all we're talking about here is the **forum culture**. Most actual places where people are playing the games aren't like this (except for a few bad eggs of course).

I miss the days when people actually strived to win tournaments in order to get respect. Now people just want to look flashy and be on stream, and get people to subscribe to their YT accounts or twitch.tv accounts.

You’re dead on about forum culture though. All of these problems that people talk about on the forums seem to magically disappear for the most part once you show up offline. It seems like the vast majority of people that show up in stream chat ONLY exist on the internet, and these faggots don’t dare act like this in the offline session, in the rare case that they show up.

I wish the join date thing was back. Back in the day if you had a join date that was older than the other guy, you were usually automatically better than him.

And you could write replies like “…[insert date here]ers”.

Good times.

Join date thing is still shown in your profile if you want to compare and contrast. I never understood why people equated an older join date to having more instant validation of your thoughts and opinions. You could’ve joined the forums back when SRK first booted up and still be dumb as a rock.

Also, if people are honest, your profile shows your age too. That’s always a good way to crap on somebody.

Yeah, but people lie on that shit all the time. Besides, stupidity doesn’t know an age limit. There are idiots who are 14 years-old, 17, 25, 30, 35, 40. People who speak and act retarded at 25 years of age rarely get any better the older they get.

I think it natural for someone who’s put hundreds (possibly thousands) of hours into working on something that isn’t their job to not want to see that thing die. That, and it’s not always guaranteed that the newer version of a game is going to be better than the existing one, especially when Capcom is considered.

That’s still implying that its not so much about the new game as it’s about the old game. There shouldn’t be meta-considerations like that as to whether a game is good or not.

Take SF4 or MvC3 or KOF13 as they are, not by how they might effect the scene for MvC2 or ST or '98UM.

You’ve said some fucking dumb things in the past but this is amazing
