Taking Sagat to the next level

i dunno, for me, jump in = dp. 150 dmg and with trade / 2 meter = f. rh ultra. but that’s just me.

I stopped doing option select techs with sagat, or any other character really. When i first played this game I could just normal tech AKA let go of the joystick and hit grab and I would tech. Once I got into this option select fad, I kept getting tossed left and right, no idea why, but for me, the risk of being on the ground as sagat is too much for me, no more option selects.

I have yet to master them. Seems you kinda have to expect the throw and do the OS late.

Where as with a normal tech you can tech a little early and you will still get the tech it seems.

Any good kara TU setups? been trying to react to jumpins from a far but u need mad reflexes to pull it off consistently like a regular AA.

i find that after a knockdown and backing up full screen, instead of doing a meaty low TS…delaying it slightly so that they have enough time to jump over is a good bait for kara TU. gotta do more testing but its hella hard to just do it on reaction.

btw f.lk xx TU is for pussies who cant nail down the f.hk version. same distance, quicker startup.

as far as good kara tu setups… it’s like any other sagat dp “setup”

get 2 meters and throw that shit out there hahaha. sagat is the scrubbiest character in the game. You either hit them and rape with ultra, or don’t hit them, and dash up for the grab.

^^^Too true^^^

I just use Kara TU as AA to increase my zone of control.

You can do it on pure reaction, it’s not hard at all.

A while back I mentioned a good gimmick you can do with sagat. F.rh whiff - they try to punish you but it has fast recovery - then do a TU cancel ultra.

During a session last week I discovered you can lame out the same way with f.lk. I usually do f.lk into crouching jab into ex TS - Ultra in the corner if my opponent is low on health. But you can f.lk into TU as they try to punish you etc. It’s not f.lk tu kara it’s just f.lk let the move come out, then DP immediately afterwards. Again, it’s a gimmick, not a strategy, but it’s cool to know regardless.

I mentioned in a previous post about how TU for chip damage is the best way to finish an opponent, found some shit out the hard way at the arcade.

Was playing against a ken player, TU for chip on wake up, he did ultra. Ultra sucks sagat out of the sky and hits him. Next round I do EX DP for chip, same thing. So vs ken, fireball is your best option.

Akuma

They’re just gonna teleport away on wake up - fireball is your best option.

Guile:

TU chip on wakeup gets ultra’d if he wake up ultra’s you.

People, start adding to this list. For example, ryu does wake up ultra, you’re safe, and you punish anyway. Some characters can still wake up ultra you, others cannot. They might be able to survive with the invincibility frames of their ultras but they won’t connect. For example cammy. You would DP through her, and she would spiral arrow ultra out of your face, and you can TS her.

I’d like to have a list of every character in the game, if you can TU them on wakeup if they do their ultra, and what the result is. That will clarify when it’s best to TS for chip or DP them for chip. I’ll add more when I sit down in training mode (which i never do it’s so lame :frowning: guess that’s why im not a top player. Gotta spend time in the lab to get those sanford kelly skillz

“How To Forever Punish Jump-ins with DP - Regardless of How Bad You Think Your Reaction Time Is”

It comes down to where you focus your eyes during a match. Obviously, a proficient player NEVER looks at their own character during a match. You always have your eyes on your opponent, with your peripheral vision on your character for spacing.

When far away to mid screen, I focus on their face and the space above it. Once I see my opponent enter that space I throw out the dp. Never fails. If you’re looking at your opponents feet or waist you might miss it.

The reason being Sagat controls the ground. You have tiger shots - knees - long limbs. You never need to focus on the ground, just need to have your eyes in the sky. Once you see your opponent break the plane of space where their head is, it’s DP TIME!

When my opponent is close up, I only focus on their feet. This is the space where if they were to jump over you, it wouldn’t even cross up, they would be jumping too far over you. So looking at the sky is pointless.

Hopefully this helps someone out.

My reaction time on jump-ins is fairly decent, but I have problems with certain characters, like Rufus. I can handle his ground game pretty effectively, his j.FP annoys the crap outta me. I can never seem to realise when to NOT throw a TS so that he jumps over for a free hit.

Any tips?

Random tournament tricks I use:

I went to canada for their version of evo. Overall a good time. Since I didn’t know the caliber of player I was facing, and I was a marked man because I’m from America, and NYC at that, and I drove up with Arturo sabin the daigo killer sanchez I was in trouble. I either had to deal with noobs throwing out insane amounts of gimmicks at me, or people playing the match like they already lost “so fuck it - I’ll TU anyway” mentality. Of course there were good players there, but I couldn’t feel them out until round 2 of the first set anyway.

One thing I did was in the first round vs any opponent, I let them jump in on me and combo me for free. Then they think - wow this guy sucks, free win. Next time they jump in - DP. They say to themselves “he got lucky.” they jump in again, DP. They jump in again, DP. It’s over.

Sagat has the health that I don’t mind getting combo’d early. Who cares? You just helped me on my way to ultra meter, and you built up my super bar. Next time you jump in it won’t be so free

… hint: Never get comfortable throwing fireballs ever, always assume your opponent wants to jump.

Oh shit, hows it going man. I was the black guy playing Sagat. Good tips btw they really helped my game.

Glad I could help. You Canada guys are cool as shit.

For those who don’t know. Canada is the S v S mirror match capital of the world. Not only do 90% of their players play rog or sagat, they actually know the mirror match perfectly. I was impressed.

lol only horrible scrubs fall for that shit

ooops.

Tell that to Canada. I bet the entire country is pleased with your comment.

Also, if I’m playing a player that I know, I won’t do this. It’s when I am in an area out of state and I don’t know any of the players. If I’m in Manhattan, this won’t fly for sure.

That, and good players don’t jump in period, unless you throw an unsafe tiger shot. There’s no reason to jump in this game. A scrub thinks its a great opener, but it’s not. You are completely defenseless in the air, unless you jump in safely. Except, I’m talking about a guy who just jumps in to jump in, expecting me to not DP them. So, not only does my opponent jumping in tell me something about his level of skill / tendencies / potential habits - that I can use against him for the best out of 3 match set, but it also conditions them to think that I’m as scrubby as they are and jumping in is free. If they’re good, they won’t jump in for no reason, and if that’s the case, my mind game does not apply

nobody should fall for the same shit 3 times in a row. Let me ask Tao if he would fall for that shit… (Canadian player)

I still don’t see how “Taking Sagat to the next level” involves trying to bait bad players.

i was reading some old posts and saw some people talking about dhalsim strats. i didnt notice if anyone talked much about this but when you are at medium range with sim, and he is abusing HP, you can try and time a FADC so you absorb his punch and try to get in and do a TU or some mix ups. FADC works real well when sim jumps foward or backward and throws out the downward double punch. if you are close enough and you FADC at the right time you can get in and get off a free TU which can ultimately end up into an ultra combo.

once you get good at doing this, sometimes you can time the focus attack and hit sim after you absorb a st.hp or j.hp. using the focus attack or cancel can really help you to get in on sim. just dont do it too much and get caught loosing a lot of health because of some unecessary absorbed hits.

use this thread for this sort of information thank you.

I used it as a gross example to simplify my point. Even if it works once, if you have 2 meters and ultra that’s all you need. I wasn’t giving this tip as a bit of advice on how to conquer the world of sf4. It’s for those who play in a semi-competitive environment. Canada wasn’t very competitive, it was mostly xbox live kids with the exception of about 20 players. But for an entire country, yeah 20 isn’t much. I can’t really fault them either, I went to love ghetty, their arcade in toronto. It’s 2 cabs, so basically 2 people playing 1v1 at a time. If it wasn’t arturo on a 35+ game winning streak, it was this azn kid with long hair who played sagat on a 30+ winning streak. I can see how that would discourage someone from playing in an arcade.
