Tactics for Beginners?

Hey all

I’m going to be frank, I am a fighter’s worst nightmare. My combo crafting goes as far as LMHS, LMHS. That’s literally it (besides the odd super). I have been reading up about tactics for MvC characters and play styles (such as keepaway, rushdowns heavy hitters, battery etc). I really want to learn how to rushdown and keepaway (mainly keepaway) well, but I have no idea how to go about it. This bring me onto a few questions:

  1. Is it better to concentrate on a particular style of play upon seeing your opponent’s team (eg pick keepaways against rushdowns) or go for an nonspecialist team with mixed rushdowns and keepaways?

  2. How would you recommend I go about using the keepaway strategy? I mean, especially with M.O.D.O.K, surely spamming projectiles isn’t good enough?

  3. What kind of assist would you recommend for rushdowns and keepaways?

  4. Any recommended characters or teams. I know I’ll have to find my own style with differing characters, but a beginning point would be much appreciated.

Yeah, as I said, I’m a bit of a noob at fighting games, even though they have always intrigued me. Any help would be vastly appreciated

Thanks all!!!

Hullo,

  1. Mixed teams are usually better since you can confuse the opponent in what you are trying to do. Amaterasu is a mix up queen, she’s got loads of options. But then again it’s just a matter of preference. Keepaway is actually pretty hard in this game, I’ve noticed most of the better players usually get rushed down after a couple of minutes. (Beauty of fightings games, learn the opponent)

  2. No, you should look at Spartan’s videos on frame advantage, he combines his assist to prevent the opponent on getting in, meanwhile he’s throwing daggers and lances with Arthur. He’s not spamming like a mindless idiot, he’s controlling and timing the shots.

  3. That’s a really up to you, go to the labs and just pick whichever assists that help your team.

  4. Er…no clue. I see a lot of Arthur (Dagger assist), Deadpool (Beta Assist) and Doom (Rocks) teams for keepaway. Really, it’s up to you.

Keep away is incredibly difficult in this game. FilipinoChamp plays a great run away game from vids I see of him and he’s the only actual calibur player off the top of my head I can think of who does run away successfully in this game. Rushdown is by far easier to play. To begin, I’d advise picking up Wolverine (berserker barrage or tornado claw), Wesker (Samurai edge), Akuma (Tatsumaki). Learning how to use Akuma’s assist to cover both Wesker and Wolverine’s easy to use rushdown and basic bnb combos can take you fairly far in the game. Both point characters also have very useful mixups and resets that you can explore in their respective character forums. Once you get better at the game you can choose to continue with the team (which is also a very well designed team) or move on to other characters.

Stop doing LMHS LMHS and do LMHS MMHS.

  1. Pretty much every character can rush down so even your keepaway teams will be rushing down at some point.
  2. Sit in the corner, chip them with specials and use your assists to prevent you from getting hit.
  3. Tron Flame, Akuma Tatsu, Dante Jam Session/Guns, Haggar Lariot, Doom Missiles/Beam, Sentinel Drones
  4. Look up Honzo Gonzo if you want to learn keepaway, if not just start with Wolverine/Wesker/Akuma and go nuts.
