T.Hawk Laboratory

Chun will always beat T.Hawk just by design so that’s just something you’ll have to overcome or have another character for. You just have to know your normal spacing game vs. hers and hope for the best because you’re never going to get close enough to land mix ups against a good Chun Li unless she falls asleep. Anybody with lame hit boxes that can space well like Chun, Rog, Bipson etc will give Hawk problems. You just gotta force your footsies on them and try to get a knockdown so you can land a mix up. If not just stay in the health lead with the footsies and watch for them to do random things to approach you or get a knockdown on you.

Watching Hung lose to a Chun by a pixel shouldn’t really be a sign of anything. If anything that’s more of a sign that he can at least fight her. If he got bodied and tossed all over the place then yeah maybe but that’s not that big of a deal. Most of the T.Hawk’s in Japan are arguably better than he is any way and would have enough experience even in that matchup to win a 2/3. He’s definitely a skilled player but he’s not the be all end all of high level Hawk either.

The fact that T.Hawk actually gives Yun legitimate problems is enough reason to keep him as a character. It’s up to you if you wanna be one dimensional and just stick with Hawk in tournaments all the time. With 40 characters you’ll wanna have another character ready for one of his harder matchups but generally he’s good enough now where he can take on any matchup and if he gets in his high damage output and mix up potential can get him to win quickly. He also has some of the game’s best and longest ranged normals.

I completely agree with the above poster. It’s not easy, but the fact that he improved significantly, and many of his bad matchups being nerfed significantly definitely counts for something. He still has a good amount of bad matchups, but for me, the fact that he can win ALOT more consistantly makes me think he’s a solid character.

And it’s true. T.Hawk actually does give some of the best characters in the game genuine problems, and so T.Hawk can definitely compete at high level play. I’ll admit that the Chun matchup is still significantly in her favor, as well as many other Fireball characters, but the new EX Condor Dive really helps alot. It’s not a winning plan that puts the matchup in Hawk’s favor, but it does limit the Fireball characters’ options and makes T.Hawk a threat that they shouldn’t take lightly.

Why not keep T.Hawk as a main and simply choose a Secondary? It’s not like there’s a rule where you can only commit to using 1 character for all occasions or something. Even if you picked the best character in the game as your main, they’ll still have matchups with problems and so it’s still recommended that you have a Secondary anyways.

It’s obvious that you love T.Hawk, and what better time is there then now to play T.Hawk? This is his best SF4 incarnation, and like I said, he can win alot more consistantly now and give some of the best characters in the game a run for their money.

Agree fully with this. T. Hawk has his demons, but a well-picked second should help with those. After watching Arturo Sanchez do well at CEO, I’m thinking maybe I need to re-pickup Dhalsim as a second. He’s worse than he was in Super, but methinks he’d be able to deal with some of Hawk’s bad matches.

how about blanka is still a ass match??? no punish for the ball???

Previous posts stated it can now be punished with sweep. Not sure if that is every version or not. It’s still a terrible match. Just not entirely free for Blanka anymore.

I stick with T.Hawk… I pick my shit. Its hard somtimes when I randomlly lose to utter nonsense but it happens. People will always think I am terrible and mash command throw. People will always say I win because I play T.Hawk but people will always say I lose because I play T.Hawk… Its just the baggage that comes with the character. I have pages of hate mail because of it. He is not an easy chracter to have as a 24/7 main.

Watching Hung lose was very upsetting.

Yep. It’s tough but Hawk is just so fun to play as. :stuck_out_tongue:

you can also punish some versions ( I’m not sure which) with a standing hard kick very easily. match-up is still way hard though, as you said.

I’m never dropping hawk, he’s simply too fun. I’m thinking of picking up fei long as a secondary though, since in the original street fighter 4, I used to mess with Vega and him before hawk came on the scene. I want to pick up vega but you have to work so damn hard with him and the guy has like…NO reliable answers to pressure. anyway, whether its for tournament reasons or no, it really broadens your horizons to pick up another character. playing Vega has made me respect hawk so much more as a character, I get bodied so hard when playing Vega.

also, I get so hype when I win a tough match with Hawk.

i’m using T.Hawk more now than in Super. The HK buff, new EX condor dive and others makes it more fun to use him now.
I’ll use him in an upcoming tournament next weekend and see if i’ll do well… =)

hey guys! how is it going?!?! I rarely post but I do check the forums pretty often. I was pretty bummed that I lost to that chun but it happens. I am out of practice and don’t get to play the game as much as I want to. You really shouldn’t give up on T. Hawk because a match looks too hard. I really still do think that T.Hawk is a solid mid tier and the only matches I think where thawk has to be really patient is vs blanka, juri, fei, sagat, sim and guile.

As for the twins, I think he has an easier time vs yun then yang. Me and Hsien both think that the match is 5-5 vs yun. Although I did beat him 5-2 in a ft5, lol, but its only because I know his play style because I have been playing against him for a long time.

Its awesome that there is a lot of discussion about thawk stuff in this thread. I can add in my 2 cents about stuff if anyone ever wants my opinion on anything, haha.

Hi Pro T.Hawk player! I’m fine, how are you? A part of me died when you lost to that Chun, but you played masterful though, and I don’t think anyone else could’ve done a better job. I’m with you when you say that we shouldn’t give up on T.Hawk when it’s hard, and I agree completely that he’s a good character. Great to hear he can compete with the Top Tiers too.

I don’t think there was ever a game with T.Hawk in it where he had a free ride. He was always a Mid-tier and below character, but he’s good though, and definitely a threatening character under the control of a skilled player. I really love T.Hawk alot, and he’s easily one of the most unique and well-designed grapplers of any fighting game. I wouldn’t even quit him even if every one of his matchups we’re literally 9-1 in all of his opponents favor, lol.

Hey was Hungebee’s match played on the stream?

I want to watch it.

Hey everyone, I’m picking up Hawk for Arcade Edition and noticed that the THawk threads are a little underdeveloped.

I hope that with this new iteration of SF4, we can all contribute to help change that.

Hope to discuss with you guys soon!

I’m starting to feel a little bit of hype for 3rd Strike Online, especially since I was one of those folk who got into fighting games because of SF4. Now, I’m wondering, since our man T. Hawk isn’t in 3rd Strike (but there is a DLC option…make it happen, Capcom! ;>_>), who would be the most similar to pick up right away? I love being able to play some footsies and use those powerful normals to wear down my opponent. This leads me to think…Hugo? Alex? Not sure, but those are the two who jump out at me right away. Thoughts?

@Hungbee I agree with a lot of what you say. He is a knowledge based character… I put him in the category of a Footsie character… just with a DP and a SPD… most players are already afriad of Thawk… His 50/50 is retarded good if you get it going… Scarier than new geif IMO

I like Ken in Third Strike… Hell, Thawks broken Crouch Foward is the same as Kens. Thats one of the reasons why I picked hawk up initially…

I played Demon Hyo at the break today… It was actually close… It came down to match point for each of us… Me and Hyo have very similar play styles… L.A.M.E Video may be up on youtube? I dunno I played a littler careless but it didnt help that there was a blanka on the TV next to me so I sound reacted to a few things and random DP came out

I’ll agree with this, fully. T. Hawk has a damn great footsies game, if you can get it going. I’d be willing to say he has some of the best footsies in the game, up there with guys like Ryu and Balrog. Crouching forward is obviously great, and people who don’t know T. Hawk too well always seem to underestimate the power of the standing roundhouse. T. Hawk is one of those guys who can win a match just by poking.

Also going to agree with:

I’m not too sure if Juri is that difficult, but I can’t say I’ve fought (m)any good Juris (as much as my friend wants to think otherwise about his Juri and Cammy, both are…not that good). The multi-level fireballs are the only issue I’ve encountered with a Juri. I’ve also suffered the same issue with Gouken, but he’s a pushover once you get to him, so whatever. Guile is the one whose been giving me the most issue lately (outside of that ass, Blanka, of course). I’m thinking all the bad tier-whore Guile players online have dropped him, and this has caused a filter, leading me to playing smart Guile players more. I suppose that’s what EX Condor Dive is for.

I’m going to stop rambling before I feel like an old guy. I’m hungry, where’s my teeth?

3SO is a totally different game compared to sf4. There isn’t really anything you can take from sf4 over to 3S, mechanics wise. The reason why a lot of people didn’t like 3S was because of the parry system. Hugo is as a grappler isn’t a good comparison to thawk is sf4 because you can’t really tick to spd in 3S. If you have never played 3S, think of it as learning a new game and new mechanics. IMO, 3S is a heavy footsies and throw type of game.

Snake - Don’t watch my stream match, I was ass. lol.

My question is simple:
I used the neutral J. FP to catch people jumping trying to avoid the SPD but now in AE neutral J.FK has better hittbox than before… but is better enough to choose it?

Try it out and let us know.

I use N.J Roundhouse for corner pressure… for jump aways I chase them with Roundhouse for the counter hit
