Switch-less USB selector for PS3+360 "Imp": Re-Design Underway, Input appreciated

RJ45 8-Pin Connector - SparkFun Electronics

Thank you sir.

I went through the wiring a couple times with my multimeter and found nothing wrong. So I got rid of the IMP and installed a DPDT switch, everything works perfectly. I wish I could figure out what the problem was. But the client got the stick back and they are happy with the switch. Thanks for the help Toodles.

EJM: Try soldering another 4066 on top of the one soldered on the IMP, it should make a difference.

I no longer have the stick. After installing the switch and seeing that it worked perfectly I gave it back. I do still have the IMP sitting here so if I get some time I might mess with putting another 4066 on top and seeing if it makes a difference.

Got a Imp v2.1 from Lizard Lick and the RJ45 jack Toodles recommended. Put it together with my MC Cthulhu and Madcatz 4716 pad stick. I have no problems using the stick on PS3, 360 (the 360 autodetection works perfectly) and on my Xbox1, but when I try to plug in the stick on my Wii with a Gamecube cord or on my Dreamcast with a PSX cord and a Total Control Plus, it does not work.

ETA: For completeness’ sake, the G-V holes on the Imp are soldered to row 1 of the G-V holes on the MC Cthulhu. RJ45-VCC is connected to the V column on row 2. VCC hole is wired to the VCC screw terminal of the Cthulhu.

Alright, sorry if this is a stupid question, but I’m a little confused. I’m upgrading a Cthulhu+ dual mod from an imp v1 to a v2. The pdf shows nothing is connected to the VCC off the imp to the Cthulhu+. I’m assuming the V on imp is where the Cthulhu+ gets power from, but why does the VCC on the imp go to the MC Cthulhu in the MK setup?

When using an MC, I dont know if the power is coming from the RJ-45 jack or the USB, so they need to be ‘cleaned’ individually through separate diodes on the MC in case someone pulls a stupid and plugs the RJ-45 into one console and the USB into another. No such risk with non-MC board; power comes from the USB section only, no need for protection diodes, simpler wiring.

Ok, that makes sense. Thanks Marcus…

Mod complete, it was a cake walk and works perfectly on 360, ps3 and in both modes on PC. With the Imp v1 I used to be able to turn the ‘primary’ system on remotely using the guide button on the stick. It doesn’t seem like I can do that on the Chimp or Imp v2 most likely due to the auto-detect function. I’d have to use another controller to turn the system on or just get up and do it manually. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

No big deal though, I’d rather have auto-detect anyday. Thanks again, very happy.

1K+2P+3K on plug in will force 360 mode, which would allow you to turn it on via the guide button. Plus, it should stay in 360 mode even when the Xbox360 is turned ‘off’ but not unplugged, so as long as you dont unplug the stick or the xbox, you should be able to still turn it back on with the guide button.

Toodles, anything I should test for my PSX and Gamecube issues above?

Of course you thought of everything, good to know. Thanks again Toodles.

The pins on the console end of the cord have to connected to the appropriate columns on the Cthulhu, and no others. You just have to troubleshoot it to figure out which pins are or are not properly connected. The D and E columns go through the imp, so focus on the others. It’s a wiring problem.

So even though I have an Imp v2, I still have to be directly connected to the Cthulhu?

No, the appropriate RJ-45 pins should be connected to those columns. They do have to be electrically connected.

Just checked continuity with a multimeter for the A,B,C and F columns between Cthulhu and Imp, and they all register as connected. I’ve added extra solder to some joints that were poorly done, but it’s still not working for anything that doesn’t use the USB wires (G,D,E,V).

Bump/double post to say I soldered some new wires for the G-V holes after the USB consoles began failing as well. They now work again, but GC and PSX still don’t work.

The section where the USB cable is connected to the version 2.1 imp, in a 2 x 2 square, I need to know what colors from the usb cable go into what hole…

I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Any ideas?

If you’re soldering the cable directly to the board instead of a USB jack, you should be using the four labeled USB holes next to that 2x2 square instead. If you absolutely want to use the 2x2 square, use a multimeter to figure out which wire goes where.
