Switch-less USB selector for PS3+360 "Imp": Re-Design Underway, Input appreciated

How much are these going to run?
Its less that I’m in a rush, and more that I need to get a MC Cthulhu chip from you anyway

I crunched all of the numbers and the final answer: No change. They’ll remain $9 each in single quantities. A large batch have gone out to LizardLick, so hopefully they’ll be listed there in a week or so. If anyone can’t wait, you’re free to get ahold of me to get one faster.

I just installed an imp2 + mcthulhu + 360 TE. Works great now, but I made the mistake of trying to update to mc2.2 AFTER installing the imp2. I had to take it out and update first.

Really? I would have expected the bootloader+Impv2 to work even with the older firmwares. Weird, but glad you got it working.

Yeah, it was a friend’s mccthulhu, on spooky beta i think. After putting in the imp2 + 360 Te I would get “device attached” on the bootloader but the green progress bar would go up only half way and the “open hex” buttons were disabled. It’s on winxp. Ps3 and ps2 still worked, but I got no 360 autodetect. But after taking it out and updating, I put the imp2 back in just how it was and now it’s fine, bootloader and all.

Wait, do the new imps come with the rj45 jack or do we have to get that ourselves?

There are spots to solder an RJ-45 jack and/or USB jack to the board, but niether are included nor installed already. You’ll have to buy a jack to go on it. I’ll send a note to Chad to try to talk him into stocking them.

Imps and MC chip came earlier, thanks, the new boards are awesome
One quick question though (I don’t have the boards in front of me), I have everything wired up except for the RJ-45 cables. I take it my Pin 1 goes to the upper left of the RJ-45 holes (orientation with the text RJ45 JACK facing up) correct?

Can’t wait to actually sit down on monday when my LL order comes and finish wiring everything up to the Cthulhu

The RJ-45 jack is setup exactly the same as in rtdzign’s rj-45 thread.

are those purdy boards at me local lezzy lickerup yet?

oh and I got all my stuff in today for the carbon fiber dustcover I will shoot you a pic later on

If they’re not up for sale yet, then they’re not up for sale. If you’re in a hurry I can sell you one directly.

I’ll take you up on that, but I’m not in a hurry. Just impatient .

I think I got a bad IMP. I have done a PS3 HRAP and madcatz 360 pad dual mod with a V1 IMP. The IMP just doesn’t want to switch to the other pad. I have tested both pads one at a time using the IMP with the other disconnected and they worked fine. I have also used the GUIDE button and when that didn’t work I switched to START & SELECT and neither has worked.

So I then used your troubleshooting guide and I think I found the problem.

  1. Voltage going to the IMP is 4.93v. GOOD
  2. Small PIC pin #2 = 0v & #3 = 4.93v. GOOD
  3. Large PIC pin #2 1D- = 30 ohms, 2D- = 5.14M ohms.
Large PIC pin #10 1D+ = 83 ohms, 2D+ = nothing, digital multimeter stays in the O.F default position. <-BAD? (followed the trace and it goes to pin 11 and makes contact via multimeter.)

The gate that connect the outgoing D+ to 2D+ is controlled by pin #12; the D- to 2D- gate is controlled by pin #13. Plug it in so that it goes to secondary mode, and check the voltages on pins 12 and 13 of the 4066 chip. If both are high voltage, and the resistance between pin 11 and pin 10 is still open, then the 4066 is bad. You can easily grab another 4066 and stack it on top of the existing 4066 and solder the legs together, or replace the imp.

Just checked it. My seconday mode is the HRAP PS3, for pins 12 & 13 they both were at 4.98v. Resistance between pin 10 & 11 is ~80 ohms.

Another thing I just discovered is that to put it in secondary mode (PS3 mode), if I touch the disconnected GUIDE wire to the IMP Guide contact it will switch it from 360mode to PS3 mode. This is while Start + Select is still attached to the IMP. So if I solder my red guide wire to GUIDE on the IMP it will always be in PS3 mode and with the wire removed it will always be in 360. It doesn’t matter if I’m holding down the guide button or START + SELECT trying to switch, it will never switch.

I was wondering. On the imp 2.0 pdf, it says Connect Imp ‘RJ45-VCC’, but on my board I don’t see anything listed that. Is it the pin that says “RJ45-VCOL”?

Crap, you’re right. The spot labelled RJ45-VCOL is the one you want. I made a typo somewhere; I’ll get that fixed asap in the pdf.

I can’t really make heads or tails of what all is going on in that installation. What I can tell you for sure is that the Imp determines which system goes to the outgoing USB lines immediately after power up. If you’re plugging it in, seeing the 360 pcb on the computer, and then touching that wire to the guide point causes it to switch, then there is a definite wiring problem going on dealing with power. I can also tell you that the S+S=G functionality will only work if the unlabelled jumper on the bottom is shorted; that would make that Imp’s Guide point always low; connected to ground. Without a more detailed ‘this is connected to this’, I don’t have anything more helpful to give you.

Typo fixed in imp2.pdf and reuploaded. Thanks again, Dezik.

Just wanted to drop a line and say thanks to Toodles for the new imp boards, the install was very straight forward and after a firmware update I’m rocking a PS360/MCCthulhu/Imp v2 with auto detect :wgrin:

Just ordered an Imp v2 from Lizard Lick. Any recommendation of manufacturer/model of RJ45 jack to put in it?
