Sushi...

I’m a sushi newb myself and now I like it a lot. If you like spicy stuff, I’d say definitely get some spicy tuna. Also make sure you get rolls, NOT hand rolls. I accidentally ordered a hand roll the other day and it’s like an ice cream cone made of seaweed full of raw fish and rice lol.
Yellowtail and salmon are safe bets too. I’d say get one of the blander kinds if you want to actually experience eating raw fish and the like. On the same note, stay away from anything with the imitation crab meat too. A lot of the special rolls are slathered in all kinds of crazy cream cheese/spicy mayo/etc and if that’s not your cup of tea… but it does add some crazy variety.
Just go with whatever looks good to you, it’s a new experience, enjoy it!

This place looks pretty legit so I doubt they’d serve any imitation crab meat. And no to hand rolls, got it. Probably saved me alot of trouble there haha. And looking at what im thinking of ordering maybe that I’d a bit too extravagant/complex for a noob like myself. Maybe I should throw in a noob friendly roll…

Toro is the fatty belly part of tuna.

My ONLY advice:

Don’t skimp on price. If you are buying cheap sushi, more than likely you are paying for stale fish, which will leave you gagging at the mouth and turn you and your date off to the experience. Good sushi will usually be more expensive because you are essentially paying for the freshness of the fish. Wherever you go, check out yelp and see what people have to say about the destination of your choice.

Fuck, now I got a craving for Eel.

They don’t have oysters there? That’s what you should be eating.

God, yes on that last one. I fucking hate it when people hand money directly to the sushi chef at my favorite sushi joints. (In NYC, it’s usually the tourists) Thankfully the chef always shakes his head and points to the tip jar. I understand the customers are trying to be nice and tip or whatever, but there is a giant bowl marked tips right on the counter for a reason! People don’t seem to realize how filthy money typically is, and the guy is making your food WITH HIS HANDS FFS!

FutoMaki all the way.

Usually has the Nori on the outside, rice inside, maybe fake crab meat, sometimes real, egg, japanese pickle, cellery or some other crunchy vegetable.

I love them. It’s the only kind of sushi I can truly enjoy. Everything else is either raw (which I am afraid of due to the risk of getting sick although I believe it’s safe) or it’s all americanized and non authentic.

just had sushi earlier w00t

when i first started eating sushi, i just tried a bunch of stuff and experiment.

toro salmon aburi is one of my favorites… aburi means ?smoked" iirc… a few of my favs sushi are smoked. though some i prefer raw like maguro(tuna), is pretty nice too?- two kinds - chuutoro (medium fatty), ootoro(super fatty, usually the most expensive but boy its hella good)

as for fried stuff… that aint sushi. lol

regarding etiquette… wasabi mixed with soy sauce is aight… i do it sometimes and ive seen a lot of japanese do the same.

Adding to etiquette: the ginger slices are meant to refresh the taste buds so that your next sample of sushi tastes the way it should without an aftertaste from the piece you just ate. So inbetween sushi rolls, have a bit.

Also, rubbing sushi sticks together to ‘remove splints’ is considered bad taste. No need to do it.

I always mix my wasbi with my soy sause, makes a nice paste that can be spread on the sushi.

yeah, getting too involved in the minutiae of sushi etiquette is just kind of pretentious ‘’ i know more japan rules’’ shit you don’t need to get involved in. It’s food. If you like wasabi and soy, do it. As long as you’re not doing overtly gauche shit like burpin n fartin, who cares. Stuff like the issue Galactic highlighted is reasonable too. That’s a legit hygiene concern.

I normally don’t go out for Sushi when other people suggest it, I have the bad luck of somehow only getting invited to get sushi with people who treat sushi as some kind of sacred japanese ritual, they make the experience awful. I usually wind up getting a plate of grilled eel (SNATCH HIS ASS OUT THE TANK) and rice anyway.

also, don’t try to be the coolest weeaboo in town and impress people by ordering warm sake. Usually only cheap sake is warmed to mask impurities. It’s not some secret samurai ritual.

This needs to be made into a PSA

Pretty much what I get if I just have one type of roll. Yellowtail and smoked eel are good too.

Was told the spider roll is good but its not served at the restaurant I go to.

Wait, when are you planning on going with her?

If you can go yourself for a short “dry run” lunch, that would be good, so you can check if the place is good or not

Apart from the high end expensive stuff (like sea urchin and toro) my FAVORITE is the chopped scallop cone
It’s basically a cone of rice, covered in seaweed, with chopped scallop mixed in with some minor seasoning and mayo
When I can, I almost always order it.

It’s not traditional, but I really like California rolls, hahahaha. They are a safe choice for new people.

Sea urchin… if the place is legit and GOOD, sea urchin is very good, because it is rich and buttery
If the place is bad, it’s going to SUCK because it’s not fresh and very fishy and gross and sloppy.

Make sure the place is run by Japanese ppl. Then it’s usually legit
The sushi places here that suck are run by Vietnamese ppl (not hating, just telling it how it is)
The ok places here are run by Koreans (same as above)

Anything with spicy tuna or yellowtail is gdlke:tup:

Good idea Endless. There’s no rush really, so I can probably hit it up sometime this week for lunch. But from everything I’ve seen/heard it’s pretty legit.

Great advice from everyone, glad to hear that everyone isn’t so uptight about the sushi eating etiquette. Like the guy above said, it’s still food haha but yeah thanks everyone.

Spider rolls are dope. Soft shell crab is serious business. It’s actually one of the items I’m not afraid to get at even a cheap sushi place because it’s so hard to fuck up.

I love Spider Rolls, usually ours doesn’t come in 8 pieces but 5. And I don’t know how your places make Spider Rolls but where ever I eat, they make it huge where you have to be like a python and dislocate your jaw to open your mouth some more to eat it properly. So if it’s built the same way consider that because girls don’t want to struggle eating sushi.

Unagi. Always good. Not raw, which is why most new to sushi like it.
