Game play footage:
I’ve been following this game like a hawk ever since it was announced because the teaser caught my attention much more than any other game announcement so far this year and the game play shown so far is even more GDLK then what I was expecting. From what I can tell it’s basically Amnesia: The Dark Descent meets Dead Space with rogue like randomly generated elements, so hopefully it’ll scratch my itch as both a survival horror and science fiction nerd. Interviews and more info on Routine are in the steam link above, so before anyone calls it another generic space marine FPS, actually do a little reading. Routine is first and foremost a survival horror game and all the mechanics in it serve to emphasize that, even the all purpose gun thing called the CAT uses floppy discs as ammo with random effects which may help or hurt you.
Oh and Routine has OCULUS RIFT SUPPORT! I can’t imagine how fucking terrifying that shit would be.
I thought it “Routine” because the main character was doing a routine spaceship check. Or maybe since its non linear they expect the player to eventually follow their own routine. This is permadeath correct?
I hope this isn’t one of those Survival Horror games where all you do is run. As good as Amnesia was I didn’t like that game never forced the player to confront creatures that tried to kill you. Running and hiding stops being scary after a while and becomes mundane.
Lazy trolling on SRK? Wow I haven’t seen that before.
The survival horror genre is an off shoot of the adventure genre which itself is defined by emphasizing puzzles. Very few survival horror games don’t feature puzzles in some way, also Routine takes into account full body awareness, which suggests there probably will be some physics based puzzles, unlike most FPS games which treat the player as a camera with two arms sticking out of it.
Just curious why don’t you want a lot of physics based puzzles?
I understand the herculean effort it takes to google is just too arduous a time sink for you so I’ll save you the trouble. I haven’t used it myself but, it’s a virtual reality headset for games with 180 degree support that supposedly works the way we all fantasized VR technology to work.
The player character is sent to the moon base to figure out what happened to the crew that was stationed there, but your second explanation makes sense I didn’t think of where the title came from before. I have no idea where they got the name from but it sticks out in my mind, so mission accomplished I guess. And as stated in the OP a million times, yes permadeath
It grinds my gears when people post in a thread without taking 5 seconds to read/watch the OP. From what information we have so far running and hiding will be a big part of the game, but as the game play and interviews show there is also some gun play. It’s not like you collect bullets though this isn’t an FPS, the “ammo” are floppy discs with randomized effects some of which the developer said can put the player in an even worse situation than they started in so shooting will be a risk vs reward thing.
I loved Amnesia because all I did was run, that’s the point to disempower the player, although it would have been even better if the AI pathing was randomized.
holy guacamole this looks fantastic! Havent played a good survival horror game in good long time
I totally agree. The first few encounters in amnesia are terrifying, and i really liked the thrill of the chase the first few times but it honestly wears thin when its the same monsters with the same AI chasing me till i find a barrel to crouch behind. I dont know if full on combat always would be a good thing but if they made it so there were some enemies to run from and some you had to fight they could reach some sort of balance to prevent stagnation. Hope they have enemies you can shoot to slow down but not kill, scariest imo.
I watched the video in the OP. I wasn’t aware that device the character was wielding was a gun. I thought he scanned the robot and fucked up which is why he ran. Seeing how Gunplay is suppose to work is nice to hear.
Physics puzzles have been done a million times and are annoying. The first half of Limbo was brilliant, then came the physics puzzles and it grinded to a halt.
Boom. That’s why I quit Amnesia after just a few hours, there was no combat and I didn’t find it remotely scary because of this. It was boring as fuck and felt like a point-and-click adventure game.
The shooting aspects of this game sound retarded and very infrequent. The Evil Within by Shinji Mikami is the only decent looking modern survivor horror game. Save us from these terrible survival horror games, Shinji!
The no combat feature is why I loved Amnesia, the survival horror genre aims to make the player feel defenseless and disempowered, and it’s easy to do that when you can’t fight back. Sorry to hear you didn’t like it, but it’s fitting you felt like Amnesia was a point and click adventure game because it is, as I said survival horror is a sub genre of it. It doesn’t sound like you’re not a fan of pure survival horror, in which case The Evil Within (which im excited for too) will probably be more your style since Mikami confirmed it to be a mix of action and horror. if you think there aren’t any great survival horror games out your Google fu needs leveling up =P.
