Superior Tech Talk: MvC3 Iron Man Q & A - Ask Questions get Answers

IMO, iron man is a pretty average point character. He doesn’t have the GTFO tools to play good keep-away like trish or dorm, he doesn’t have op normals like sent or tm, his rush-down is average at best with a slower triangle jump/high low mix-up and his unibeam is good but can’t outclass EMD, arthur lance or doom’s beam. Iron man is basically a swiss army knife with some of everything but no superiority in anything.

Now as a 2nd character tho, iron man is the business. Everything dhc’s into PC, his assists are really good with a strong beam, a good lockdown only surpassed by chun, doom, haggar, tron and ammy, and a very easy to hit OTG. Other good thing is PC dhc’s into other hypers very well so you can go soemthing like lighting storm/ice storm into PC into hyper drone for example.

I would not anchor iron man cause he can’t hang alone since he’s kinda slow and all his damage requires setups. Also, his mix-up is easy to block like sentinel and he doesn’t get fantastic damage off a throw.

Hi peeps, been reading a lot of the stuff posted here on Iron Man, really helpful. BUT I’ve come across something that’s maybe obvious but I’m not familiar with:

‘flight/flight cancel, fly/unfly’. I see this a lot and a few ppl have noted that it’s extremely important to learn this. Can someone explain what notations I have to do in order to perform this?

The reason for this is that I watched TeamBrownTown’s video on Iron Man BnB, and can’t seem to grasp the idea of the air combos. I realise that, by adding the flying/unflying mechanic, you’re able to perform more hits.

Transitioning from Tekken into Capcom series is quite the leap. Totally different style of plays, excuse the noob quesiton, HELP ME

P.S. PieGuy, you’ve been a real help by explaining in detail. We noobs love u.

Fly/Unfly is where you replace the recovery of a move with that of fly or unfly. I don’t know the exact frames on fly, but it is a way better to fly/unfly Iron Man’s J.C than not canceling at all. You could just see how apparent it is by super jumping in the air and than doing a J.C and see how many you can get before you hit the ground and then compare it to how many you can get while mashing fly/unfly (should be at least 3).

Think of it like Christie going to relax stance after her moves. It is a very similar concept I think.

I’ll start, because I got questions:

New to playing Iron Man and in the air I try to the basic combo m,m,h, down+h. I always miss the down+H. Any advice on the timing of that?

My main, go to combo for the moment to get a feel for Iron Man’s pacing is cr.L, cr.M, st.H, S, jc., j.M, j.M, j.H, j.H+Down, (double jump, forgot the acronym) j.M, j.M, j.H, S, (land) DP+L, QCF+AtkX2.

The key to Iron’s air combos (that don’t include flight) is to input the combos very quickly, with no delay. That combo above works on most characters, but takes some work with the smaller ones.

Does he have a consistent combo off air throws at every height and range?
Been experimenting, but haven’t found anything I can consistently hit. The air dash after the smart bomb is also inconsistent for me.

with his airthrow you have pay attention whether or not your to low to airdash. If you can airdash then just do smartbombs, airdash, J.M, j.H, land then do whatever lol. Now if your to low to airdash then its alittle harder to land a combo. if you have 3 bars you can just do smartbombs, falling J.H to iron avenger, But with some practice you can get a full combo by doing smart bombs, falling J.H, dj uf, J.H, J.S, land cr.M, H, S, to whatever aircombo you do.

airthrow in the corner you can always get a full combo by airdashing straight down to smartbombs into whatever launch combo. if your to low just smartbombs then land and do smartbombs into whatever.

Does Iron Man having a standing over head?

Also what’s his cross up attack? Is it jumping M?

No standing overhead. Use trijump M

j. M can crossup but only when you get really lucky. You can just trijump to the other side of them and hit with low attacks

What does everyone use as their go-to approach move? I’ve been using tri-jump :s: or empty tri-jump to c.:l: for the most part… IM is definitely my weakest link right now though so I figured I’d seek some advice.

Should I bother with learning flight combos? And if so, is there a basic BnB flight combo I can build off of?

I know there’s one in mission mode, and I’ve been using it, but I want to see if there’s anything better / easier.

The only reason I want to learn fly combos is because of that stupid S

I was wondering how exactly do you cancel repulsor blast? They do it in this vid: at around 6:00-6:02

That’s iron man’s repulsor spread. Its qcb H during a repulsor Blast. It makes his Repulsor Beam safe plus you can use it to combo into his level 3.

Away from ps3 atm… but does anyone know if: s.H xx fly, f.u+hp xx unfly, u+hp, land, s.H will combo? If not what bout in the corner? What bout using xfactor? What bout xfactor in the corner?

If one of the above situations does work… anyone know if you can then loop it? I know you could link j.l and m’s to make it work… but the point is being able to save the scaling on that stuff so after a couple loops you could launch and still get his full air bnb into wtver.

can you combo anything other than a light off standing h xx fly?

i didn’t think you could but i haven’t tried much

Is there a reason why you guys use Heavy Smart Bombs at the end instead of the lighter versions? I know the damage is only like a few thousand off so it’s not too much of a difference. I assume since more hits = easier to follow the OTG with Proton Cannon after combos with high proration?

Sorry but I’m trying to pick up Iron Man as my middle for one of my teams as I need a projectile assist that DHCs well with my team. Iron Man seems to fit the bill so with the PSN down I’ve been trying to put in work and getting good quickly with Stark Industries.

it just does more damage in most combos - in the most basic of combos though (like c.MHS j.MMHS smart bomb proton cannon) the heavy actually scales the combo overall to net you slightly less damage, when you’re doing bigger combos (including if all you do to that combo is add a double jump MHS) heavy just nets you more damage. they have the same exact startup frames all around.

Does anyone know if j. M can be used as an instant overhead? If so, then Iron Man may be able to do sexy stuff like:

j. M (instant overhead) >> down + H (peak of jump) >> S >> land >> insert bnb or combo here
