I mean, I get it. Gotta practice those hot forward fierce combos
Bowling tonight. I’m blowing up peoples phones.
And I don’t get that. Why is figuring out shit like that fun? I know I’m the weird one of the group, but losing because I don’t know how to beat something isn’t fun/productive and trying to find something is boring and frustrating. If I knew what it was I had to do and didn’t do it, then okay, I can work on that and improve, but not knowing what to do?
Im not looking for an easy way out, but i thought that was the point of sessions is to help each other out right? I honestly make attempts to research this shit (im on forums and youtube all day long at work) but nothing is supposed to be better than getting it from the horse’s mouth. Im honestly not trying to bitch for bitching’s sake, but the benefit of playing face to face is to critique each other’s play styles and to offer suggestions (why not try using Character X’s move to beat strategy Y) Maybe Playing with Chris A has spoiled me in that respect as that is how our sessions go. The whole Level 3 thing is just saltiness on a personal rival level, that is meaningless bitching. But to tell me that playing with someone in order to get better is looking for an easy way out, then i’d have to disagree. Im not asking for all the answers but when i run through every play in my head, and none of them seem to work, that’s when I ask for help.
I learn and teach best visually and hands on. I can’t explain why something does or does not work as well as the others, but i can try. Maybe we can get a session with someone who is better at explaining things (Adonis? Logan? Ron?) and they could sort it out for you.
Logan isn’t saying sessions are an easy way out, needing me to break down facets of my gameplay and show you my holes is. Thing is, I don’t have the perspective of someone who’s played against these characters as much as the others Adonis is mia most weeks and James plays him a different way.
I disagree with this. If I want you to learn how to get around my Team Chair Starcraft setup I’m not gonna run doom on point because it’s not the same as MODOK with those assists. However instead of making you endure that setup over and over in matches I’d rather take you to training mode and we can practice it for a while. Babying you or not giving you the best of my ability is doing a disservice to both of us!
Don’t forget that Chris A. is a teacher by profession Some cats can do that and some can’t. Just need to pick and choose who you play based on need. I learned from Mike G, Jay and Matt on my fundamentals and they broke down everything to the letter, from basic gameplan to choice of pokes. Playing Adonis and James will do the same (James and go and test, eval, and discuss while we play, while Adonis breaks down the thought process behind the mixup and strategy). Ron, while not ‘teaching’, will let you ease into it while still abusing what you aren’t doing (ie, throws the hell out of me) for more intuitive learning session. And me? Well, you get that good ol in house love if you’re not learning from Mike J, play someone else. Its that simple.
I’m not saying playing in hopes of learning is looking for an easy way out drew, that would be retarded to say. What I’m saying is you can’t just go , ok, how do I beat that and get mad if mike can’t tell you! He probably doesn’t know himself! Now I can tell you if youre losing to me I can give you ideas, or my opinion of what I would do if I were you, but I can’t straight up always yell you " here is the solution". And to be fair mike j probably isn’t the greatest at offering help/solutions, but he shouldn’t have to be.
On your side here though, mike j could probably get better himself Iif he played without the dog vs you for awhile, maybe without Dante. To better his gameplay outside of them. Sometimes you
Have to think “am I playing to win? Or playing to get better?”. I’m guilty of just playing to win sometimes cuz it’s fun! But playing to get better is a better idea unless you’re in a tournament.
One of the best fighting game players I’ve ever played with had this as his sig for awhile :don’tplay to win, play to get better, winning is simply the end result of that kind of practice". Or something close to that I may be paraphrasing, but anyway thanks mike Mixon!!
And holy shit, I disagree with that on so many levels. Its the same thing I explained to the Gville cats. Just because you know the holes doesn’t mean you are skilled enough to consistently capitalize on those holes. THAT’S where the true progress is made. If you ask me, ill explain where the holes are and the appropriate counters and my counters to those counters are. Cool, you know the gameplan now, but so what? Can you stop it? Who consistently makes the right decision has more skill IMO.
That’s your thing chris, your whole focus is on how you counter something, and you play real defensive style. It’s definitely good to know the counters to things yes, but when you play offensive, you don’t necessarily have to know the counter for your offense, you just know it works. I don’t have to know how you counter my mixup, you do. Of course, knowing how you may attempt to counter it is good, and at a really high level , I’d say it’s necessary. But when I’m playing people who can’t counter my offense, I don’t necessarily always learn what that counter is, until I see someone do it, and then I adapt my offense around that. In mvc2 I’ve got some magneto resets I couldn’t even tell you which direction you should
Have been blocking to block it, but I don’t care because you’re the one trying to block not me.! Obviously I agree with where you’re coming from
Because it would help me to know that in case I fight someone using that o.n me etc. , but my point is at certain levels the offensive guy doesn’t always know the counter to his offense or the holes in
His strategy until they get exposed.
Precisely. Adonis always use to ask me what to do about various things expecting me to have an answer…rarely did I (and he gave up asking). I do what I do because it works. If it’s working, I don’t necessarily know what you’re supposed to do about it…because I haven’t been exposed to that.
Example - Before I went to Pensacola, if you asked me what Dante should do about Zero jumping all over you I would just say block or run away. Only when I got there and played Mixup a bunch did I learn that s.A beats every air button that Zero has consistently and cleanly. I still don’t know how most other characters are supposed to stop it, because I don’t play those characters.
It’s also worth pointing out that sometimes you really do have to learn what to do on your own. I’ll do things you won’t see in videos or read about on forums because it works for me. There’s probably a reason you don’t see top players doing these things, but since they’re ‘smart’ enough to know better than to try I won’t know why they don’t do something, so I do it…because it works. James does this even more - the guy will turtle with ANY character. There might not be good anti-turtle strategy for a lot of characters that don’t traditionally turtle, so you have to find out on your own.
GGs tonight to everyone in everything. Bowling was fun and looking forward to making it a weekly outing (Chris A is picking up that hot spin shit). Let us know whats good on Friday. Adonis, we HAVE to get together and do a Rain Kombo day before you head to Tampa, you’re WAY more creative with him than I am…
GG’s to all, and to all a good night! See you guys for hardcore punchy-kicky games tomorrow night. Also, Adam, I think your neighbors were burning some…unique incense.
That seems… rather foreign to me, but that’s probably because I’m an actuarial scientist when it comes to these silly games, haha. Jay told me I think too much for Marvel.
Anyways, good times today. Jays team was panning out quite nicely, and the assist button still eludes me. We found some new (maybe?) technology today with Chris: seems the first hit of his grenade super completely dispels Dorms fireball super.
