Eh, so Layton’s not quite first-party. Oh well. I’d sooner give him the nod than I would Solid Snake, who was only peripherally relevant to Nintendo’s history, and Snake got in. Wishful thinking, I know.
Are smash balls confirmed to return? I’d be sad if they didn’t, they’re one of the most innovative and fun additions to a franchise I’ve played. Very clever how the smash ball itself adds not just a good deal of whackiness to the already frenetic game play but also it’s invincible for a few seconds so it adds a layer of strategy: Do you bait your opponent to weaken it for you so you get the last few hits and break it? Do you go for it immediately and try to keep it away from opponents? Do you let your opponent go for it so you can kill them in their distracted state?
I would have preferred there being a meter to use for final smashes but I’m ok on the Smash ball. It does have a bit of strategy to it and I’m sure it’s implementation is to prevent 4 different people from unleashing their final smashes all at once (just think of the ridiculous sensory overload of Mario doing his, Samus doing hers, Lucario at the top doing his own and Ness right smack dab in the middle performing his…SEIZURES FOR EVERYBODY!). I think it was already confirmed that smash balls were back IIRC.
For the record I like Snake and wouldn’t mind him coming back…not at the top of my list but I could take him or leave him. Now his disjointed hit boxes on his shit? That can go. Was real annoying getting hit by a knee and being no where near the limb. It was almost as bad as Reg AE Yun and Yang’s palms.
spoiling Toon link appearing again is about the equivalent of saying there will be a new CoD game next year.
Everyone needs to calm down about whether or not he’s a clone. TL is a popular character and his properties are different than reg link.
Pic of the day. Excuse me sir, did you happen to drop this bomb?
I swear this looks like a bugs bunny cartoon gag here.
Which is pretty handy, since I used to say that excessive wavedashing in Melee kicked up enough of a dust cloud to look like a Roadrunner vs. Wile Coyote episode.
No one noticing Adult Link hiding out on another platform?
I saw him. Bet he’s thinking “Aw there’s that lil’ nigga jackin’ my steez again… I guess Sakurai’s gonna make me shit tier YET AGAIN…”
I noticed but lets be honest, once Toon Link hit the stage who cares what vanilla Link does?
I care. Link is the character I’ve always wanted to enjoy, but has been so incredibly underwhelming game after game that I’m starting to lose hope. He needs some serious reworking if he’s going to be viable in Smash 4, but I hope he gets it!
young link being a higher tier than adult link before the game is even finished = …lol
I don’t think he needs “serious” reworking, they just need to tweak his moves a bit. Give him better kill potential (the massive knockback increase on his spin attack from the trailer is a good start), make his zoning good (his zoning in Brawl was pretty nice but his poor kill potential and pretty bad recovery just murdered him), and slightly improve on his recovery. I feel his toolset in Melee was pretty good overall (though the Bow could have been better), but the higher tiers just simply outclassed him in terms of what they were capable of in that engine.
I’m really curious what his Side-B will be though, since it’s the one special move we have yet to see from either Link. If I had to hazard a guess…I feel that he may get either the beetle or the whip from Skyward Sword, while Toon Link keeps the boomerang. But that’s just me.
As a Toon Link main, it’s kind of sad he has more knockout power than Adult Link then again he’s one of the strongest in Brawl so…yeah. Toon Link is perfect as is, he’s a really fun, dynamic, and well balanced he needs no changes, Adult Lnk on the other hand needs serious rebooting he just can’t be a slower, stronger, heavier version. He should have access to different items like the big goron’s sword, diety mask, hammers, beetles, ocarina, etc he should be a more gadget focused character than Toon Link and have more knockout power.
shadow ace: When you have 3 games in a row where Link has serious problems, it’s fair to wonder if they’re going to deal with that for once. This doesn’t mean I think X is going to be Y tier or A will be ‘higher tier’ than B.
William: That seems like a fair assessment. I’ll look forward to whether things end up being addressed in about the way you’re suggesting.
I play this fan game called Super Smash Bros. Crusade and Link has two side-b’s. In the air, it’s his boomerang. On the ground, he hits his opponents with his shield and can cancel that attack into four other special moves, similar to Marth’s side-b.
Here’s what he can do after the initial shield attack:
B: Moves forward a bit and does his dair. Of course closer to the ground. Pretty good pushback.
Side-B: Somersaults in the air with his sword
Up-B: A red-hued, more powerful version of his standing Up-B. Only hits once.
Down-B: Rolls behind his opponent and does a sneaky, short-hopped bair that knocks the opponent away. The roll can hit and combo into the next attack. My personal favorite. It is also the safest of the 4 options.
All attacks have very good knockback. What do you guys think? I’m pretty sure Sakurai wouldn’t think about giving Link this, but is this a fair substitute?
I think at the very least it’s worth exploring new options. Does he need more mobility? Perhaps his roll from the various 3D Zelda games would be a good option. Does he need more kill power? Maybe some of the stuff you listed from Crusade would do the trick. Figuring out the exact solution requires figuring out the exact problem (why is regular Link failing so much?), though… and some of you are likely more qualified than I am to discuss what that might be.
It also, sadly, falls into theorycrafting. This can be fun I’m all for it, but the odds Sakurai’s going to happen by our thread, see the ideas, say “That’s GENIUS!” and implement it are pretty low. I can only hold out hope the devs figure it out on their own…
Fucking toon link,
Goddamnit I was hoping that terrible MU wouldn’t follow Peach to a new game.
Hope WFT has a good match-up worth of counter picking XD
I also remember Sakurai specifically saying there would be no clone characters in Brawl before its release. Of course we all now know that Brawl ended up having even more clones than Melee, so I’d say keep this in mind.
Nintendo puts a lot into their Smash games but clones are an extremely lazy move.
Um…more clones? Melee had C.Falcon/Ganondorf, Mario/Dr. Mario, Link/Young Link, Marth/Roy, Pikachu/Pichu, Fox/Falco…that’s 6 sets of clones.
Brawl had C.Falcon/Ganondorf, Link/Toon Link, Fox/Falco/Wolf, Ness/Lucas (which is a bit of a stretch, considering how truly different they are from each other)…that’s 4 sets of clones (5 if you consider the triplets of the Star Fox chars). Brawl gave us less clones and differentiated the clones from each other way more than Melee did. Even the Star Fox trio are a LOT different from one another, the only similarities are the basics of their special moves.
And yes I purposely left Mario/Luigi out.
