It’s not like they play identically. There is more difference between Toon Link and regular Link than there was between Young Link and regular Link. That’s a step in the right direction in my book.
I didn’t spoil anything! You just did lol. TL has been in 3 different games and he could have stabbed any one in any of those games. It was vague enough that people who played the game knew the reference.
Hell, I assumed the updated thread title was a joke about Toon Link’s d-air attack in Smash.
I am very slightly disappointed to see him on the roster, mostly from the “Why are we getting a Link variant when we could get someone wholly new in that slot?” perspective, but I’ll refrain from a river of tears on three grounds.
1 - I am not that bothered by it.
2 - Several others are clearly very happy he’s in and I wouldn’t want to take that away.
3 - At this point I like the roster enough that I’ve put down a pre-order anyway. All I needed was Pit and he’s in. Having Regular Link, Samus, Villager, and presumably Zelda (Let’s face it, they’d be crazy to not bring her back) is a fine bonus.
Every single roster reveal from here could be a mr. n style “Red Rick Dias sucks” character existing solely to insult me and I’d probably still be happy enough with the rest of the cast to buy the game. If the others I’m holding out hope for (Lyn, Little Mac, Professor Layton, and “Fire Emblem in general”) show up, awesome. If not, I’ve got more than enough roster to play with as-is and I just hope the remaining character reveals continue to make others happy. Toon Link is making others happy, so my mild disappointment is easily outweighed by that.
Just realized Toon Link makes the perfect cute big eye partner for the Villager, especially since at least in pics they have of him he isn’t really enjoying hitting folk. I expect a video of the two massacring some random team to hit the interwebs before the first week of the Smash 4 release is done.
Is he technically owned by Nintendo? He’s nowhere near popular enough to get in as a 3rd party. Wasn’t Layton only published by Nintendo outside of Japan?
The problem with toon link is that as a clone character he doesn’t present a interesting enough artistic alteration. It’s like dr.mario and Mario…if we had to have a clone character then why not wolf or even oni link.
Layton was created/developed by Level-5 studios, but so far his games have only been distributed on Nintendo hardware. This is supposedly going to change in the near future with a new game developed for Android, but there’s been little to no details on it.
With that said…
I would think he has a rather high likelihood of showing up as an Assist Trophy (which would be awesome!), but as a full character I think his chances are pretty slim.
And his final smash is going to make him bigger, put him into the first person, make him translucent, and give you the ability to play punch out with the stage itself trying to punch your opponents off.
At least it better be that, anything else would be unacceptable.
