Alright if I take a shot at it, then? Ahem…
Wait, what? Why? There’s no denying that Reggie is an incredible ‘face’ of contemporary Nintendo, and when given even decent material to work with he can generate excitement or at least avoid astounding blunders (which is more important than one may think; see E3 2013 with various interviews of microsoft staff)… but I don’t know if I am ready to call him iconic to the company’s legacy yet. If we’re going to put in real live Nintendo employees, why not go with someone demonstrably vital to their history? Miyamoto or Yokoi or so on. Fils-Aime is important to Nintendo, but I do not know if I would call him truly iconic. Maybe if his marketing were to lead Nintendo to a new golden age where they’re #1 on all the sales charts, every gaming demographic loves them again, and so on… then I could see it, perhaps. Until then, this seems like taking a meme too far.
For that matter, what would his movelist be? A Balance Board as his shield/battering ram, a Wiimote as his ‘sword’, and so on? I guess it would work, but if you’re going to make a character whose schtick is 'Nintendo hardware references" then just put Captain N in and let him wield a variety of Nintendo gear. This is about the only route I could see taking him unless they go full comedy character and make his marketing pitches work as attacks (Wright in UMVC3 shows this idea can work, I concede that). Outside of those two options, and one is covered better by mixing it with the Captain N nostalgia grab while you’re at it, I don’t see what else you can do. Reggie is not, as far as I know, a real life combat badass who could give you plenty of attacks to work with.
The dev time spent implementing Reggie could honestly be better spent on any of several better character choices. At the end of the day, some aspect of Nintendo’s history is going to go overlooked in Smash 4; they do not have unlimited resources. And in the case of Reggie Fils-Aime, I think most players could fairly ask: “So… he got in, while (insert Nintendo franchise here) doesn’t have a single representative? What the hell!?”
I like the guy, but I just don’t see who benefits (other than Reggie) from him being in Smash.
…No, wait, I can think of one acceptable way to do this. ‘Playable character’ isn’t quite right, but they could make him an Assist Trophy or something similar. I’m not totally humorless; I could see the fun in being able to bring Reggie on-screen for a brief attack. Imagine him, with his permanent natural trollface expression intact, appearing. “My body is ready,” he intones gravely, before smacking an opponent with the Balance Board. I could go for this, I guess. Playable character, though? Waste of time.
