That has to be the most half-assed excuse for not having any story mode cutscenes I’ve heard in my life. Yeah, I know most of you are rightfully far more concerned with the quality of competitive play rather than the single player experience, and yes, I also think the multiplayer mode is far more important in the long run. That still doesn’t make Sakurai’s excuse any less silly.
Maybe it would be better if he said he wanted to save money and time by not including a story mode, and instead focus efforts on multiplayer. People would still be upset, though.
Beating single player to unlock characters is one of the most archaic, tedious, inefficient, fun sapping excuses to extend the longevity of a fighting game.
That being said, it sucks we won’t have sub space emissary I’m pretty sure everyone loved it.
Yeah but it would sound less… I don’t know if this is best word but I feel like ‘petty’ is fitting.
I love Sakurai, dude is probably the best Nintendo creator since Miyamoto at his peak and so dedicated he has given himself hand issues because he play tests his games himself. But comments like this and the one he made about not wanting to see another Kid Icarus sequel after Uprising for over 10 or 12 years because they put a massive amount of effort into it (And it showed) piss me off, man comes off like he is REALLY smelling his own fecal matter like they are roses. I don’t think he means to but shit, I’d rather have him things along the lines “We are focusing solely on getting the game play experience fun across the board on both systems” rather then "If you aren’t going to experience it like I want guys, we are just not doing it this time when it comes to why a feature didn’t make it into the game.
Although, really, I heavily suspect a number of the cuts are being made due to cost cutting and the fact that they really are approaching the game development with an emphasis on the 3DS version being equal since the 3DS is the number one platform in Japan and their best selling one elsewhere. Maybe I’m paranoid but I get that feeling ever since they announced the game would possibly have a smaller roster because they wanted the two versions to have the same rosters.
Well, they put in all the features from SSFIV onto the 3DS version and more, including all 35 characters, all the stages (though the backgrounds aren’t animated), and Tekken 3D has a 40+ character roster, and the Street Fighter and Tekken characters have a LOT more animations than any of the smash characters. So I don’t think roster size would be an issue between the two versions.
At this point I think the only issue may be making sure that the game is able to maintain a constant frame rate. Tekken 3D was able to do it (60 fps even while in 3D) but that’s only with 2 characters on screen and relatively static backgrounds. Smash brothers has moving and interactive stages, as well as 4 characters on screen at once (or 8 if you have characters like the ice climbers).
So if anything I’m more worried about how characters like the Ice Climbers will end up.
Id rather them focus on gameplay than a story mode any day, that said its safe to assume melee-style adventure mode might return but id rather it did not, the experience got dry after the third run through, maybe if you could take alternate paths then maybe id run through with the full roster
is there anything that states DLC stages/characters/items a possibility? I think I did remember reading that the roster would be final with no DLC but things change
Lmao Nintendo proving once again that they don’t know the gaming business behind 1992…will they ignore any story in Zelda now as a result of youtube uploads?
I am a big fan of story modes in fighting games like in mortal kombat 9. So much so that a lot of my hype dissipated for street fighter x tekken when I found out there wouldn’t be a proper story mode for that (those cutscene trailers got me too hype) this also happened to a lesser extent with MvsC3.
So yeah I’m very dissapointed, the subspace emissary was one of my favourite parts of brawl (those cutscenes were too GDLK) and I’ve lost some hype for this game, it would’ve been awesome to see megaman and mario properly interact in a HD cutscene but alas
Well, Sakurai isn’t the same as Nintendo as a whole in regard to story. That said, I am kind of blinking at what he had to say. Several things come to mind.
First, it’s refreshing to hear something other than corporate-worded excuses. On the other hand, his actual reasoning (Taz Obi’s link notwithstanding) baffles me. The only reason I worked through Subspace Emissary was to unlock characters. Were the cutscenes neat? Sure. Were they worth slogging through a single-player mode that quickly began to bore me? Outside of Captain Falcon’s intro, I can’t think of any I enjoyed that much. Also, as SuperTroll mentioned… it’s 2013. “Uploaded to the internet” is a given. It’s going to happen. Most people who don’t want to be spoiled by internet video uploads avoid those videos because, shockingly enough, they’re not self-defeating dumbasses. Most other publishers have understood this. Rockstar left significant story cutscenes in various Grand Theft Auto games, after all. They didn’t just say “Screw it, you’re gonna watch the whole thing on Youtube anyway”… they left it in, and most people who played the games enjoyed it. He’s being very silly if that’s his true reason for it.
That said, it’s worth noting that “no lengthy single-player story” doesn’t mean “no single-player content.” Melee shows us this. We might see a return of other modes like Adventure, and other things that evoked old-game feelings/nostalgia. I would personally prefer they focus on the multiplayer and netcode, and I suspect several (not all, as Taz understandably illustrates; you have my sympathies) of you would too, but I concede a large part of their target audience wants things like Home Run Contest, Adventure Mode, etc. That sort of thing has typically been part of the series and I’m going to bet it’ll show up in some form or another. Not a fully featured story, but fun little side modes nonetheless.
I personally find it very satisfying to complete a task in a game and be given the reward in return, especially one as big as unlocking a new character. It shows that all of your hard work you put into it paid off in the long run and you get to test out your new prize. I remember when I finally unlocked Game and Watch in Melee after playing 1000 vs matches. It felt so good to see that “Challenger Approaching!” warning come out of nowhere after playing a random match. I didn’t keep track of how many matches I had left to unlock someone so it was always a satisfying surprise to see. But that’s just me.
Sakurai didn’t say there wasn’t going to be any Single player content from what I’m understanding…there just won’t be any dedicated story mode with cutscenes in it. There’s still a really good chance that there will be something akin to Melee’s Adventure mode where you run through different franchises and what not. Remember…we still don’t know exactly what the deal is with the Yellow Devil in Megaman’s trailer.
