Super Smash Bros. General - Patience and Spacing....or Whine and Moan

I was really looking forward to melee…well as long as the other games don’t suck this year I’m sure it will all be good.

There is no reason. Plain and simple. It doesn’t help anybody and the only thing it hurts is NoA themselves. The only thing this game would have possibly done was give some possible free marketing to the Smash series itself which isn’t a bad thing. Hell they probably could have used Evo next year to announce stuff possibly if they wanted too but they seem completely happy with burning bridges.

I can offer you an explanation as best I understand it. Please note I am not a lawyer and may have certain aspects of this not quite right, but the basic idea should be correct.

Broadly speaking, this is Nintendo applying their policies against “Let’s Play” videos and similar broadcasts of Nintendo games, especially in commercial or profit-generating ways. For example, they have applied copyright claims to various Nintendo-themed LP videos on Youtube so that Nintendo receives some or all (“all”, I believe, is the applicable term here? Someone please correct me if I’m wrong) of the ad revenue generated for that particular video.

On one hand, they have a legitimate corporate reason to protect their copyrights and intellectual properties (one can disagree with copyright/IP laws either from a practical or philosophical standpoint, but that isn’t wholly relevant in this explanation). Companies are generally tasked with protecting what they have, and these actions can be seen as a legally valid way of doing such things. However, one must note Nintendo’s behavior on this topic stands in contrast to virtually every other company that has a game featured at a big tournament. The majority of them have offered support ranging from “we’re going to pretend we didn’t see this, you guys go have fun” to “We’re going to outright support our game being featured in tournaments. Tournament organizers might have to sit down with us and do a little paperwork so our legal interests are protected, but we’re going to do this the right way, make sure the fans know we love what they’re doing, and help get this out to the public.”

So basically Nintendo is doing two distinct things with this policy. They are protecting their material, and looking at potential additional revenue streams. The intent of the policy is fine; how they’re carrying it out is rapidly starting to reveal a lot of problems. They do indeed have a real, plausible reason for what they’re doing… just going about it in a way that is starting to upset the public. I hope they will change their minds and be more like other publishers who have chosen to embrace the free publicity/good-will that LP videos and tournament streams offer.

Wow. That’s really REALLY dumb. I was the most excited for Melee to come back too. Some classic sets went down back in 2007.

Looks like it might be back: http://evo.shoryuken.com/2013/07/09/changes-to-evo-2013-smash-schedule/

Wow…they actually came to their senses!?

Edit:

Halfway came to their senses anyway…the battle is won but the War is still ongoing.

Well! THAT was quick! Misshun CAHMPREE, as they might say!

Fuck the game industry this year…:.bitches be pulling too many 180s!

Ahh, at least they listened to us. I made a follow-up call just now to thank them for rethinking the decision, and will leave a similar note on the Miiverse shortly. We should be gracious in our victory, and let folks know this got resolved in a positive way!

“I almost had a heartattack there”

Yo melee…stay free ok?

…I had forgotten Star Fox has such good music. Think I need to go dig up a copy of one of the earlier games in the series, whether it be the N64 one or SNES one, and get a few more reminders. Thanks, King9999!

SNES Starfox has godlike music.

Now that Smash is back, I’m totally expecting a Nintendo logo among the sponsors.

Villager is going to get a TROLLFACE move in this game. It will cause automatic sleep status like Jiggly puff and it will cause everyone to go fuck themselves right of the stages for automatic KO. This move will not be banned.

Re: Logo - Who knows? I have no idea. Would be neat if it happens though. What I’m more immediately pleased about is that this means this thread will stay generally positive and fun; I’ve been enjoying our discussions… and I can imagine it would have turned very ugly in one hell of a hurry if Nintendo hadn’t changed their minds. “Nintendo hates Evo” would have become quite the meme and both the press and general public would have had a field day.

This got resolved in a positive way, and happened surprisingly fast.

I’m glad that Nintendo quickly reversed their decision. We know how ruthless they can be when it comes to legal matters, but I think in this case, PR prevailed.

Though it still leaves a sour taste in my mouth that this even happened, at least it was eventually reversed. Just shouldn’t have even happened in the first place!

The net/social media has been at it lately. That was a quick-ass turnaround lol.

Congratulations on getting your shitty, not a fighting game back, i guess that being whining babies have their use after all
