Super Smash Bros. General - Patience and Spacing....or Whine and Moan

Hmm…I wonder what changes each character is going to get? From the trailers so far, I’ve seen (excluding the overall increased hitstun):

Mario: His Up Air seems to have gotten a hitbox buff. Though that might just be a placebo effect from the new FX on moves.

Link: Spin Attack appears to have its Melee kill potential back, his other attacks seems to have more knockback now. This is good, gives him better kill potential which he really lacked in Brawl. We still haven’t seen his side-B though; perhaps this has been changed to a new special move?

Samus: Her Forward Smash seems a LOT faster. Almost as fast as her down-tilt, if not faster (like 5 frame start-up). Much better move. Also her final Smash can be aimed up or down slightly now, like Ryu’s Shinku Hadoken from Marvel 3.

Donkey Kong: Up Special got an animation change on the grounded version (I think?) Not sure how this affects the hitboxes.

Kirby: Didn’t really see enough of Kirby, looks mostly the same.

Pikachu: Didn’t really see enough of Pikachu, looks mostly the same.

Fox: Didn’t really see enough of Fox, looks mostly the same.

Bowser: Most of his changes were already gone over in one of the trailers Sakurai did, with the new stance, running speed, and new attacks. He seems like he’ll be more mobile now, and combined with his strength I can see him being a lot better compared to his previous two iterations. Bowsercide still seems intact.

Pit: Some of his changes were already noted. Up Smash was changed to a single upward smash with a different weapon, down-special was changed from the shield to the orbs. Looks like the orbs will still act like a reflector, except covering both sides of him rather than just the front. Also, his Up Special appears to have been changed, at least when performed from the ground. Perhaps this version will have a hitbox?

That’s what I noticed, anyone pick up any other character changes from the trailers so far?

You can do this in Brawl, too, so that’s not new.
Everything else you noted looks pretty accurate, though.

Looks like SRK got its answer on Smash 4…

Can we not do this please?

Do what? Post a relevant article on what people will possibly be expecting coming into the new Smash? I love me some smash, melee being my favorite but still having lots of fun with Brawl and smash 64. I think I will love Smash 4 as well…

Brawl had the best soundtrack overall, but melee had the better intro. Music and all. I hope its somewhat a hyrid in the new version. That melee intro was so whimsical but epic.

I figured we already knew what affect it would have on SRK. I mean, this thread is in GD, not FGD. So I already had expectations set low.

If those Link things LordWilly posted is true that’d be cool, Link didn’t have an oomph factor in Brawl and felt weak overall. Beefing up the spin and his normals will go a long way in helping him out.

Brawl’s campaign was fun boss battles and jumping

The dkc tribute stage was fun

If we get a legit hard megaman 2-3 ish stage i will be happy

We are trying to not derail this thread into arguments over whether Smash is a fighting game or not.

One thing I’m really looking forward to for this game is the presentation.

Melee definitely had that “not-quite-finished-yet” efficiency with its menus and UI (probably because it…wasn’t quite finished yet) while Brawl had a very stylized and consistently themed interface. I was a big fan of the polish, but I’m really looking forward to see if that themed nature and grand style can meet the to-the-point direction of the Melee UI and make something really cool looking, quick and easy to use.

Probably not the most hype thing for a lot of people, but I definitely thought if Brawl did anything right, it really LOOKED fantastic: characters, stages, menus, interface, everything.

I always thought Melee was one of the most polished games I’d ever seen. In fact, it was the first game to even make me consider game design polish. It was also the first game to make me realize that art > tech. Brawl looks okay, but imo, Melee is timeless. Brawl, with its heavy shadowing; not so much. Melee is pristine, colorful and cohesive in its art design and the animations have an attention to detail that don’t get enough credit - literally some of the best I’ve ever seen. This is a conclusion I came to just a few years ago, well into this currnet gen of consoles.

Just one example:

Notice how Falcon’s lower body convulses towards the end of the animation, conveying the over-the-top nature of the high-energy-transfer of the attack. That is astonishing attention to detail. This game came out in 2001.

Another one of note is Ganon’s idle animation: I could stare at it all day. Pay particular attention to the point where he clenches his fist and it vibrates, translating the intensity of the character to the observer. It’s not even just the animation, but the aliasing is on point as well, allowing the textures to hold up even as you zoom in.

Don’t know how I managed to appreciate this when I was always so busy playing the game on FD, Fox, No Items all the time.

I’m a big fan of the art style in Smash 4, and how the color pallette stays closer to primary colors. (Don’t get me wrong, Brawl and Melee weren’t exactly gun-metal grey and dirt brown. Very far from it infact.)

I’m also glad that each character seems to have a design that fits them better than in previous Smash titles…I can’t quite put my finger on what it is, but I just like it.

I wonder how the “every player has his own system” thing will work. Probably like traits from injustice or whatever the sub systems are called in BB.

One thing with the Melee art is that the characters actually look like action figures. I’ve been playing it at least bi weekly for more than a decade. I don’t think ill ever get tired of the look.

How does this answer anything?

The ‘action figures’ thing is probably intentional. Before they added any sort of attempt at an in-depth story, the plot was “these are some kid’s Nintendo-themed toys. Now instead of him pretending to have them fight, magic has animated them and they really ARE fighting.” I was okay with that, as I’ve personally been of the mind that Smash does not need an extensive story mode with gripping plot and detailed storyboarding; it needs more characters, stages, items for party play (and sure, I’m willing to try them competition-wise if we can come up with a decent way to do it), balance, and music. I would have gladly given up the Subspace Emissary campaign if it meant Brawl would have either come out sooner or been better fine-tuned.

Mind, I admit I’m holding an extreme opinion here: A lot of people I know liked the extra story modes and so on. I’m more arguing “in my ideal world” more than what I actually expect Nintendo to do.

Brawl was a bad casual game. Good casual games don’t roll d20s to determine if your basic movement option might arbitrarily fuck you.

Melee was a better casual game. Note this is a completely separate thing from how good a competitive/hardcore/whatever game it is. Also the terms casual and hardcore are dumb.

Subspace Emissary was garbage. Melee’s Adventure mode was 100x better.

Yes, fucking this.

Why can’t people just enjoy their game for FUN? These terms are ridiculous.

Well there are diferent classifications of fun.

I hope they bring back Shotgun Kiss, shit was amazing.

Actually, every F-Zero song in Brawl was fucking amazing.
